them from having any tendency to ride up on their su ')porting a1jc h tubes.
The bricks of each row d-L and 5, are
' locked together by mortise '9 and tenion 8 joint, but each of these rows is notfconnected with others, so that there is but little chance trimmed orchipped elf in .order to properly seat the brick 5 on the tubes 1, and give them' the proper inclination, with relation to the side sheets and with each other, so that when assembled, the tenon S of one will enter the mortise J of the next adjacent brick in the same row. I
The ribs on the underside of the bricks extend throughout the length of the latter, so that the gases and products of combustion in their passage under the arch Will be retarded in their movements, and thoroughly commingled before passing into the space above the arch, and somewillbe deflected laterally against and over the tubes and assist in heating the latter.
By providing the intermediate brick with a mortise T at each'rend the bricks of the two rows will be interchangeable and engage the end tenons 8 of the bricks of the side rows. Having fully described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
An arch brick for locomotive fire boxes, having a plurality of ribs on its lower face, the said ribs extending lengthwise the brick and throughout the lengthof the latter, and having concaved seats-at their ends to engage two arch tubes, the said seats being of less depth than the ribs so as to leave a passage- \vay between said ribs over the said tubes.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this.
