IMPROVEMENT IN SEED-DROPPERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,230, dated October 24, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J osnrn (J. BARLOW, of Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Corn-Planter Out-off; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved cutofi" for corn-planters and other seeders, to brush off the superfluous grains after the holes or chambers of the dropping-plate have been filled, and which shall be so constructed as not to injure or break the seeds; and it consists of the various parts of the cutoff, as hereinafter more fully described.

A represents a plate, which is placed in the bottom of the seed-hopper, and close beneath which the dropping-plate slides or is placed. B are two metallic plates, the lower parts of which are placed in grooves or recesses in the middle parts of the plate or frame A. Upon the outer sides of the plates B are formed lugs b, which rest upon the sides of the plates A, to which they are securely bolted. The upper ends of the plates B are rounded off, and have grooves formed in their inner sides to receive the edges of the capplate or cover O, as shown in Fig. 2, thus giving to the top of the cut-0E the form of a flattened semi-cylinder. This form I prefer, but the form of the upper ends of the plates B and of the cap-plate 0 may be changed without departing from my invention. Upon the inner sides of the lower part of each of the plates E is formed a pivot, D, which enters sockets in the middle or angular parts of the pieces or plates E, to pivot the said plates. The upper parts of the plates E are curved to correspond with and fit upon the inner surface of the cap 0, as shown in Fig. 1. The lower parts of the plates E incline outward and downward, and their outer edges come down to, but do not rest upon, the droppingplate, in which position they are held by a spring or springs, F, made of rubber or other suitable material, placed within the cap (I, and so arranged as to press the upper parts of the plates E outward against the cap or cover 0, which thus serves as a stop to prevent the lower parts of the plates E from dropping down so far as to rest upon the dropping-plate. The spring or springs F should possess sufficient elasticity to allow the plates E to yield before breaking the seed, and at the same time with sufficient strength to hold the plates E down with the necessary force.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The arrangement of the two angular plates in juxtaposition to one another in a corn-planter, as and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination of the plate or plates 13, cap-plate G, pivoted angular plates E, and spring or springs F with each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
