IN VEN TUR 36? ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT L. MARGOLYES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FACTORY-CHAIR.
Application filed February 24, 1916.
To aU whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Ronnnr L. Mnnoonrns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city oit' New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Factory- Chair, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a factory Chair, and the object thereof is to prmide a strong, inexpensive chair, which is adjustable vertically and horizontally. the seat of which can be easily displaced to facilitate quick exit in case of iire.
lith the above and other objects in view,
the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the application, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of the chair; Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the seat in raised position; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the seat; Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the chair standard, and the guide therefor.
Referring to the drawings, 7 is the chair standard, which has a threaded bore 8 at the upper end and a rectangular iiange 9 at the lower end. The flange 9 is slidably mounted in a base plate 10 firmly secured to the Hoor by any suitable means at a desired place. A set screw 11 is threaded into the flange 9 to engage the base late 10, whereby the standard 7 can be loc red in the base plate in any desired position within the plate.
A seat support 12 is threaded into the bore 8 of the standard 7. The support has a lateral iange 13 heading it. Secured to the liange 13 is a chair back support 14 `formed of a shaped wire, the ends of which are rigidly connected to the fiange 13. Secured to the back support 14 is a plate 15, which forms the chair back adapted to slightly yield relative to the said support, due to the resiliency of the Wire back support 14. Hinged to the plate 15 adjacent the said support is a plate 16 which forms the chair seat. The hinge 17 is slightly above the level of the flange 13, so that when the weight of a body Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 80,164.
is placed on thc seat 1G, the back of the seat is drawn toward the person on the seat. IV hen there is no weight on the seat 1G, the back leans rearwardly, so that if the seat 16 is raised, it will not fall back on to the iiange 13.
When a row of chairs of the charatcer described, are placed along a working bench, they can be adjusted to and from the bench in the base plate 10. The chair seats can be adjusted vertically in their standards 7 and in case of conflagration. the chair seats 1G may be thrown against their backs to facilitate the exodus of the persons along the bench.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A chair of the class described, comprising a seat support, a yielding chair back associated with the said support, and a seat connected to the back to rest against the back or the said support.
2. In a chair of the class described, a seat support, a yielding back secured to the support, and a chair seat hinged to the back and adapted to rest either against the back or the support, the hinge connecting the seat to the back being so related to the seat support that when weight is applied to the seat, the back is drawn forwardly.
3. In a chair of the class described, a seat support, a Wire shaped back support extending from the seat support, a back secured to said wire support, and a seat hinged to said back, so that said seat may rest against the back or seat support.
4. A chair of the class described, comprising a base plate, a standard rising from said base plate, a seat support on the standard, a
