Description

J. M. BROOKS.
TOOTH BRUSH. APPLICATION.FILED OCT. 6. 1915.
1,201,548, v Patented 0ct.17, 1916.
I i v WITNESSES I I v ATTORNEY PATENT FFICE.
JACOB M. BROOKS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
'roo'rH-BnnsH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented a. 17, 1916.
Application filed October 6, 1915. Serial No. 54,426.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .JAooB M. BROOKS, 'a
- citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certam new and useful Improvements in Tooth- Brushes, of which the following is a speci- .,sible with an ordinarybrush.
It is well known that, in order to properly cleanse the teeth, they should not only be brushed in alateral direction but should also be brushed in a vertical direction both the fact that up and down. With the usual type of tooth brush such is ractically impossible due to the width of'the brush makes it difiicult to move the same up and down over the teeth.
Therefore one of the particular objects of my invention. resides in pr'oviding'a tooth brush which may not only be used to brush the teeth in a lateral direction, but is so constructed that the brush may be oscillatedto brush the teeth in a vertical direction.
Another object resides in so 'journaling the brush, for oscillation in the frame and handle, that it maybe properly cleaned so as to remain sanitary.
With theabove and other objects in view, will now proceed to describe a specific embodiment of my invention which I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tooth brush. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fi 1.
In detail: The tooth brush comprises the handle 1 apertured at 2 to receive a head 3 carried by a brush shank 4 which is journaled at 5 in the handle 1, the shank extending longitudinally of the handle 1 through the aperture 2 and bearing in the other end wall of the aperture produced by the handle so as to receive the head 3 thereon and permit it to be secured in position, while also giving a firm bearing for the shank of the brush-head. The brush shank 4 may be oscillated by moving the head 3, said movement being limited by a stop pin 6. The brush shank 4 carries the usual tooth brush end 7 provided with a plurality of rows of bristles 8.
In use, the brush is placed in, the mouth in the usual manner and the teeth brushed laterally as with the usual tooth brush.
However in use to thoroughly cleanse the teeth the brush or brush end 7 is oscillated by oscillating the member 3 and thus the teethmay be brushed in the vertical direction both up-and down without inconvenience to the user of the brush.
The pin 6 will permit and limit the rotation of oscillatory movement of the brush between the opposed walls of the aperture 2,
to an arc of about 108 degrees, although this movement may be varied if desired.
embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to such embodiment but may resort to such practical modifications as fall Within the scope of the invention defined in the appended claims. I
1. A tooth brush includingv a head provided with a shank, a handle having a longitudinally disposed aperture in which said shank is mounted for turning movement relatively to the handle, said handle having an opening to which said aperture leads,
said opening being enlarged relatively to the aperture, an operating member disposed in sa1d opening, and means securing sa1d member to the shank so that the brush head and handle will be fastened in operative relation and longitudinal movement of the said member will be limited by abutment with the handle at said opening.
While I have herein described a specific 2. A tooth brush including a head pro vided with a shank, a handle having a longitudinally disposed aperture in which said shank is mounted for turning movement relatively to the handle, said handle having an opening intermediate the extremities of 'said aperture and communicating with the aperture, said opening being enlarged relatively to the aperture, an operating member disposed in said opening, said shank extending through said member, a fastening member securing said operating member to the shank so that the brush head and handle will be fastened in operative relation and longitudinal movement of the said operating member will be limited by abutment with the handle at said opening, said operating manipulation of the operating member, and said fastening member extending laterally beyond the said member for abutment against the handle to limit the turning movement of said operating member.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
