IMPROVEMENT IN CAP AND OTHER PAPERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 120,152, dated October 24, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, DENNIs D. FOLEY and J oHN J. J oENsoN, both ofthe city of Washing ton, in the District. of' Columbia, have invented a new and improved article in manufacture and trade called Perforated Cap-Paper; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of' the same, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figures 1, 2, 3, 4 are perspective views of the perforated cap-paper, as a new article of manufacture.

Every lawyeror other professional man who has occasion to fasten together sheets of' manuscript has experienced the unsatisfactory nature of the means usually employed for that purpose. The hand-punch and eyelet-setter, which are very commonly used, will perforate but a few sheets at one time, and are frequently liable 'to deran gement from overstraining; and the use of eyelets is objectionable because of the diiiiculty of separating the sheets for any cause that may become necessary. The metallic clips now also extensively used require special appliances for fixing them, and when done the sheets are not securely held, and the ends of the clip are constantly liable to catch any object with which they chance to come in contact. The special objection, however, to them or similar modes of securing paper is the necessary presence of' special tools. This is a great annoyance, especially to persons who have only to use them occasionally, and this number includes the greater number of' individuals; therefore, in the course of manufacture, and before being offered for sale to the consumer or trader, the sheets of legal cap or other paper which are commonly intended for professional use we design to perforate with Suitable holes at the piopei'point, and with perfect uniformity, as shown in the drawing, so that the paper, when purchased by the consumer, will be already perforated and ready to be secured with a tape, ribbon, eyelet, or other device which may be adopted. These perforations may be made at any time desirable, in the the course of preparing the paper for market, by machinery, which at the same time cuts, trims, folds, or presses the paper, or they may be produced by separate machinery at any desirable period in the manufacture of paper.

Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

As a new article of' manufact-ure, writing cap or manuscript paper, punctured or perforated so that the holes in two or more sheetsI will register, and may be fastened together by tape or other device, as set forth.
