To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN W. HAMMOND, a citizen of the United States residing at Visalia, in the county of Tulare and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Liquid-Fuel Burners, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in liquid fuel burners and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with a distillate oil, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which may be employed with a maximum of facility 1n connection with a cook stove or the like.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character of a self-generatlng type whereby the liquid fuel is converted into a gas, and wherein the combustion of the gas occurs at a point separated from the gas burner.
The invention also has for an object to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a supportlng base having coacting therewith means whereby a draft may be created for forcing the generated gas away from the gas conducting pipe, and whereby requisite air may be supplied to the gas in order to support combustion.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved burner whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein I Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through a burner constructed in'accordance with an embodiment of my invention with parts thereof in elevation, a fragment of an adjacent wall of the fire box of a stove being shown in fragment to illustrate certain features of the invention as herein included; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1: Fig, 3 is a fragmentary view in top plan of the supporting base herein set forth; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view in elevation of one of the supporting standards carried by the base.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a base, preferably rectangular in form and adapted to be inserted within the fire chamber of a stove or the -like, and intermediate its length said base 1 is provided with the longitudinally disposed and transversely separated elongated slots or openings 2, the marginal portions of which being defined by the upstanding flanges 3. The space between the ends of the inner flanges 3 of the intermediate openings 2 is bridged by the-transversely disposed flanges 4 whereby a container or cup C is afforded and into whlch 1s adapted to be delivered an initial supply of oil for preheating the generator G to be hereinafter more particularly referred to, it being understood that after the initial heating of the generator G, the same remains hot from the consumption of the gas generated thereby.
As herein disclosed, the container or cup C has in communication therewith through the base 1 the conduit 5 leading from a suitable source of supply, and the cup or container C has also in communication therewith throughthe base 1 the overflow pipe or conduit 6.
The opposite ends of the base 1 and at the transverse center thereof are provided with the upstanding standards 7 having their upper or free ends provided with the substantially semi-circular recesses 8 adapted to accommodate the opposite end portions of the generator G, said generator G being preferably cylindrical in cross'section. One end of the generator G is closed by the removable plug 9, while the opposite end is closed by the tubular sleeve 10 through which is directed the supply pipe 11 leading from a suitable source of fuel supply, the innerend of said pipe 11- preferably terminating within the generator G at substantially its longitudinal center.
As herein embodied, the supply pipe 11 is rotatably mounted within a gland 12 carried by and extending through the adjacent wall W of the fire chamber of a stove or the like, whereby it will be perceived that the generator G may be readily and conveniently rocked in opposite directions for the purpose of cleansing, removal or for the purpose of changing the position of the flame.
14 denotes a conductor pipe having its opposite extremities in communication with the bore of the generator Gr adjacent the opposite ends of said generator G, and having its intermediate portion positioned below and substantially parallel to the generator, as is believed to be clearly shown in Fig. 1, and the bottom of the intermediate portion of said pipe 14 is provided with the transversely disposed restricted slots 15 through which the gas generated within the generator G is adapted to escape, and said gas as it escapes through the slots 15 is directed upwardly through the medium of the draft passing through the longitudinally disposed slot 16 formed in the hood H. The hood H is adapted to bridge the intermediate openings 2 in the base 1 so that the draft passing through said openings 2 will pass through the slot 16, said slot 16 being positioned directly beneath the intermediate or straight portion of the conductor pipe 14. It is also to be noted that the hood H has its upper portion in close proximity to the under portion of the pipe 14, whereby the action of the draft passing through the opening 16 upon the gas escaping through the slots 15 is materially facilitated.
As is particularly shown inFig. 2, it will be observed that the longitudinal margins of the hood H are provided with the depending flanges 17 overlying the adjacent flanges 3 of the intermediate openings 2 and that the ends 18 of the hood H overlie the flange 4, hereinbefore referred to, and the adjacent transverse marginal flanges 3. I
The generator G is provided with the diametrically opposed wings 19 extending substantially the entire length thereof and extending transversely on a downwardly directed incline of substantially 30 and against which the draft passing through the slot 16 forces the gas escaping through the slots 15, whereby it will be perceived that combustion will occur immediately below said wings 19 and above the intermediate portion of the conductor pipe 14. By this arrangement it will be perceived that the generator G will be maintained at proper temperature in order to convert the fluid delivered thereto into gas. It will also be perceived that upon axially adjusting the generator G, the flame burning below the wings 19 may be directed as desired. It will also be self-evident that the outer slots or openings 2 in the base 1 permit a draft vtopass therethrough sufficient to support the combustion of the gas.

A burner of the class described comprising a base provided with draft openings, a generator supported by said base, a gas conducting pipe in communication with the generator and positioned therebeneath, a hood bridging certain of the draft openings of the base, said hood being provided with a single opening substantially directly below the conductor pipe, and wings projecting laterally from opposite sides of the generator.
4. A burner of the class described comprising a base provided with draft openings, a generator supported by said base, a gas conducting pipe in communication with the generator and positioned therebeneath, a
hood bridging certain of the draft openings of the base, said hood being provided with a single opening substantially directly below the conductor pipe, and wings projecting laterally from opposite sides of the genera tor, said wings being arranged transversely on a downward incline.
