' FASTENING DEVICE FOR SHOES, 8w.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Oct. 1c, 1916.
Application filed July 22, 1916. Serial No. 110,726.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALoIs J. STEPHENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Shoes, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in fasteners for shoes and other articles and consists of a simple and eflicient device of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then-specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an edge view of the device. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a sectional View on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line l4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view showing two of the plates disassembled.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the meeting edges of the shoe or other article to which the device is to be applied to fasten the meeting edges together, and B designates a plate which is fastened to one side of the upper when the device is used in connection with the shoe, and C is a rectangular outlined frame which carries a pin D in the opposite side walls thereof and upon which the roller port-ion of the plate B is hinged. Mounted upon a pin E projecting from the plate are two pivotally mounted segment plates F, curved upon their outer edges and their inner edges being straight and adapted to shear with each other. Each plate is provided with a flange F and each has a lug H projecting from its flange. Near the corresponding ends of the two plates F are apertures I mounted upon the pin E and each of the plates F has apertures K which are adapted to be brought into registration with each other to receive the shank portion of a button, designated by letter N. It will be noted that the two apertures K formed in the plates are formedone in advance of the other in order that the device may be adjusted to allow for the adjustment of the fastening device.
The two lugs H are movable through slots in the opposite flanges of the frame V, and R designates a spring, passed about the pin E and having ends which are adapted to hear one against each flange F for the purpose of normally holding the plates at their farthest outer limit or in positions in which their outer edges of the flanges upon the frame C.
It will be noted upon reference to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings that the frame has a laterally extending portion S forming a partial cover for the frame and underneath which thetwo plates F are held.
In operation, when the device is secured to the meeting edges of the upper or other article to which it is applied, the two sets of apertures of the plates F may be brought into registration with each other by passing the lugs H toward each other. When the apertures are in complete registration, the head of the button will pass readily through the same and, when pressure is released, the edges of the apertures will be drawn. against the shank portion of the button and thus lock the frame, as will be readily understood.
What I claim to be new is A device for fastening the meeting edges of uppers of shoes, etc., comprising a frame, means for pivotally connecting the same to one edge of an upper, a button upon the other edge, flanged plates pivoted at corresponding ends within said frame, a spring mounted upon the pivot connecting said plates and bearing each against a flange of the plate, the latter being apertured at dif ferent locations, one in advance of the other, each flange of a spring-pressed plate having a laterally extending lug movable through a slot in the Wall of the frame.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALOIS JOSEPH STEPHENS.
