` RECEPTACL'E-I-IOLDIN Gr DEVICE FOR BOXES.
racing?.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, VILLIAM R. LINGSHEAD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, having resided in theUnited States one year last past and having declared my intention of becoming a citizen thereof, residing at Allentown, 1n the county of Lehigh, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Receptacle-Holding De vice for Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in providing a box or other package of similarnature orv the like with a retainer for tubes,Vv vials, bottles, or other similar receptacles packed therein, so as to control the same in a firm, non shiftable, safe and non-injurious manner.
It consists also of a device adapted to be interposed in the box vover said retainer be-j tween the latter and the lid of the box to prevent rising of the receptacles and so hold them most firm as packed in the box.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the im, portant instrumentalities thereof may be varied, as long as they are included in the scope of the claims.
lFigure 1 represents a perspective view partly cut-away of a receptacle-holding device for a box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section on line Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a holding device detached in condition preparative to connection with a box. Fig. t represents a bottom plan view of a portion of the box on a reduced scale. Fig. 5 represents a section of a modification.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates a box which excepting the features of my invention applied thereto is of usual construction.
2 designates a holding device or rack for tubes, vials, bottles or other similar receptacles placed or packed in the box, the same in the present case being of the form of collapsible tubes 3, having necks 4 on which are closing caps 5, as well known.
The device 2 comprises a rack composed of a piece of material, preferably sheet metal, which is bent on itself in longitudinal direction, forming the plurality of side walls 6, and the piece 7 which joins the bottoms of the inner members of said Walls and separates the latter forming between Specification of Letters Patent.
them the space or passage 8, said piece l7 also forming a broad basebywhich the de# vice is supported fiat on the bottom of the Eox and so sustained and steadied in the tions in the box have therein the vertically- Patented Oct. 10,1916. Application filed April 16, 1915. Serial No. 21,762.

extendingrecesses 9 which extend through the top bend ofv each pairof walls 6 into said walls to near the lower endsk thereof. In theprlmarycondition ofthe device the ends of the walls 6 have projecting therefrom the horizontally-.extending lips 10, and the v underedges offsaid wall have proJecting therefrom the downwardly extending lips 11, it being seen thatwhen the device 2 is 'placed on the bottom of the box 1 and rested thereon, then the lips l0 are passed outwardly through slits in the sides'of the box and bent over the exterior of said sides thus clenching said lips and thereby rmly con-y necting the device with saidends, see Fig.
1. The lips 11 are passedrdownwardly.v
through slits in the bottom of the box and bent over the exterior of said bottom thus firmly clenching said lips and thereby connecting the device with said bottom, see Fig. 4.
The tubes are inserted in the box with their necks and caps yoccupying the recesses '9 and occupying the bottoms of the latter as seats therefor, so as to sustain the neck end of the tubes and limit the descent thereof. At the same time, the caps of the tubes occupy the passage 8 and as there is a plurality of rows of tubes, the caps of opposite tubes face each other in said passage, the walls 6 preventing said caps from contacting and being crushed one by the other. At the same time, the tubes are controlled by said walls, whereby they cannot shift from or toward each other and so are retained solidly in the box without liability to be battered or deteriorated in appearance.
In order to still further control the tubes in the box I employ the binder 12 which consists of a piece of suitable pliable material longitudinally channeled so as to be fitted over and straddle the cap or neck-portions of adjacent pairs of tubes and have its sides or legs 13 bear downwardly upon said portions and its top" 14 is engaged by the lid or cover 15 of the box and held in place 'by the same,l thus pressing the neck portions ingof thetubes therefrom is prevented, the tubes thus being clamped in horizontal and vertical directions in the box, the effect of i .which in preserving thene 4appearance of ACY the tubesjvvhen the box arrives at its destination andthe box is opened is evident. v
lIn! Figg I show an end view of a retainer formed ofwood' of one or more pieces,
`the vsame-having recessesinthe side walls thereof, similar to those shown inthe otherV igures, saidiwallsabeing adapted to be secured tothe sides andbottomof the box b nailsj,.tacks, `glue or other means.
vHaving thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letter'sPatent, is Y having a base and being formed of a plurality of double Wallsbent on themselves forming a quadruplication of Walls lntegral Withgthe base, the passagezbetween the innermost, adjacent Walls being adapted toreceive` the closing devices of opposite recep- Y tacles 'end to end, said plurality ofwvalls having therein alined recesses opening in the-.top bends offsaid: Walls.v
l f 2; A rack insertible in a box, said rack having abase` and being formed'lofA aV plurality ofldouble Walls 'bent'on themselves formingfa quadruplication of Walls integral with the base, the passage between f the inner- Copiesiof this'patentqmay be` obtained for 1. A- rack insertible ina box, .said rack A .most adjacent Walls being adapted to rei ceive the closing devices of opposite receptacles end to end, said plurality of Walls having therein alined recesses opening in" the top bends of said Walls, and lips on the walls extending therefrom to enter openings in the sid-esci the box and to be secured vthe box, a binding member adapted to .be
placed over said device and straddle a portion of said receptacle and be engaged by and held down by the lidl of the'package, said member'being composed of a top Wall, and side Walls depending therefrom forming a longitudinally extending channel in the member "between said legs.
