Be it known that I, ALBERT H. DE Voir,l
a citizen of the United States, residing at l/Vestfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needle-Actuating Mechanisms for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention hasfor its object to provide needle actuating mechanism for sewing machines and more particularly machines adapted for glove sewing and similar uses. The improvements may be used in conjunction with looper and feeding mechanisms of any suitable form, the same being especially adapted, however, to the general machine construction shown and described in my application filed October 18, 1918, SerialNo. 795,841, in which the vibratory and endwise movable looper-bar is actuated through a rocking element fulcrumed upon a swinging arm and carrying studs upon opposite sides of its fulcrum engaging actuating cams from which the rocking element derives both rocking and vibratory movements upon its supporting fulcrum, in conjunction with a tilting bearing which moves bodily to complete the requisite six-motioned travel required of the looper, the feeding mechanism comprising a horizontally arranged feedwheel carrying a plurality of ratchet-wheels of progressively smaller diameters operatively engaged by one of the series of selective pawls carried by a pawl block.
The needle actuating mechanism, subject of the present improvements, comprises, in its present embodiment, a reciprocatory needle-bar suitably journaled in the frame of the machine above the main-shaft thereof and fixed to a depending slide-pin fitted slidingly within the tangential socket of a sleeve or strap embracing an eccentric upon the The component parts of the mechanism thus briefly described are pivotally or slidingly connected together with ample bearing surfaces and the needle is actuated without the harsh lateral thrust and consequent accelerated crank movements common to crank-andpitman needle-actuating means heretofore in use.-

The improvements are shown mounted within a frame comprising the hollow-base 1 from which rises the standard 2 provided with the transverse main or driving shaft 3. Adjustably secured upon the main-shaft 3 is the gear-wheel 4 meshing with the gearwheel upon the cross shaft 6 supported above and parallel with the main-shaft 3. The two gear-wheels are employed to actuate elements of the machine not included within the present improvements. On a horizontal linek substantially intermediate the said gear-wheels the frame is formed with the inwardly projecting bosses 7 within which are fitted bushings 7X to receive the needle-bar 8 which, in this instance, is shown mounted horizontally with respect to the machine frame, as in the usual type of glove sewing machines. At its forward end the needle-bar has fixed thereon the sleeve 9 of a laterally extending arm 9 which sustains the split clamp-block 10 in which is.
secured by means of the clamp-screw 11 the eye-pointed needle 12.
The needle-bar has ttedthereon intermediate its bearings the split collar 13 forming the transverse head of the depending slide-pin 14, the collar and pin being held against movement relatively to the bar by means of the clamping-screws 15. The depending slide pin 14 is fitted slidingly within the tangential socket 16 of a sleeve'or strap 17 embracing the needle actuating eccentric 18 fiXed upon the main-shaft 3.
The needle actuating eccentric 18 and its embracing sleeve are so related to the depending slide pin of the needle-bar that during a portion of the vertical throw of said eccentric the said sleeve 16 moves relatively to the pin 14, the latter being held substantially motionless for a brief interval to secure the requisite dwell of the needle during the loop-seizing operation of the looper.
It is obvious that the improvements may be employed in connection with a machine in which the needle-bar is mounted for vertical reciprocation without involving more than minor changes in the arrangement of the parts. 1t will also be understood that various changes may be made in the form anderrangement of the sliding connection between the needle-bar and the tangential socket of the eccentric sleeve Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I cla-im herein is In a sewing machine, in combination, a
shaft, an eccentric actuating element mounted thereon, a. strap embracing said actuating element and provided With a tangential socket, a needle-bar carrying a needle, and
a pin secured to and disposedtransversely of said needle-bar and slidingly fitted Within said socket.
