Be it known that we, ADELBEBT Moena and EDWARD F. Mon'roN, citizens of the United States, residing-at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new, and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal Construction;
and .we do declare `the following to be a full,-
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art "to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relatesto sheet metal construction and more particularly to a partition or `the like, theprincipal object of the invention being to provide a partition or door having smooth flat faces, spaced to form a. body'of sufficient thickness to give it an attractive appearance and requisite rigidity, without waste of material. Y
In accomplishing this object we have provided the improved details of structure hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is an elevation of a partition constructed according to our invention, a part of the facing side' being broken away to illustrate the interior of the body. Fig. II is a transverse section of the partition. Fig. III is an enlarged detail perspective of a corner of the partition, particularly illustrating the wood filler and its method of combination with the `side -member and molding. Fig. IV is an enlarged vertical section on the line IV- IV Fig. I, particularly illustrating the spacing members. Fig. V is an enlarged transverse sectionfof the edge portion of a modified form of partition, 'particularly illustrating its combination with a supporting standard.
Referring more in detail vto the drawing: 1--2 designate Vthe sides of the partition,

In order'to provide body vfor the partition, to enhance its appearance and obviate buckling or bending after the partition is installed, we space the side members 1-2 apart and connect the same by braces of suitable character and number, the preferred construction of the braces constituting channel iron 7, which arefixed to one of the,
members, preferably by welding their bases to the inner face of'said member so that the open channel faces the opposite member, any witable number of channel iron being attached to the member, according to the size of the partition and the possible strain to which it may be exposed. -In the drawingsV we have illustrated the channel iron 7 as Y extending vertically at spaced intervals across the partition, and all of channeliron secured to the same sideof the partition. Fixed to the opposite partition member are angle irons 8, one leg of each of the irons being welded or otherwise securely attached to the partition member and the second leg projected into the channel member 7 on the opposite partition member, so that it is nested within the channel to prevent transverse movement of the members relative to each other, the legs of the channel and angle members being of the same width so. that they coperate in spacing the sides V1--2 apart.
The channels 7 and angles 8 are provided with slots 10-11 at intervals throughout their length and the slots in the separate members are adapted for registration to receive the transverse spacing rods 12 that are adapted for projection through the slots when the side members are assembled, to key the channel and angle members together and prevent their vmovement longitudinally relative to each other. The construction just described is adaptable for use as either a straight partition or a door, and it is apparent that suitable hinges or other brackets kmay be attached to `the partition although the same have not been illustrated.`
In Fig. V, we have illustrated a modified form `which is particularly well adapted for use in connection ywith partitions that are carried on tubular standards.v In this modi- `fication the sides 20-21 have their edges 22-23 turned back and spaced toform grooves 2li-25 and an intermediate channel 26. The molding 27 is in channel form, with the legs 28-29 extending outwardly and nested between the back turned `lips 22 vand sides 20-21, the wood blockller 26 `being located between the yside members 20-21 and held in place by the transverse rod 27. With a partition of this construction the channel edge is laid against the tubular standard 28, so that a partV ofy the standard projects into the channel and when suitable brackets (not shown) connect the partition with the standard, a rigid construction is provided. In assembling a partition of this construction, the side members are stamped or suitably shaped to form the inset lips and the channel and angle members are spot-welded or otherwise rigidly secured to the opposite side members, in proper relation to affect the housing when When the -parts are overlaid with the channel and angle members nested and the slots 10 in through the registering slots to key the channel and angle members together, the ends of the rods terminating close to the edges of the partition so that when the wood fillers are placed they bear against the ends of the rod. The block lillers are then located along the edges of the structure and the molding tted over the shouldered lips and the screws projected through the moldings, and into the wood fillers, the tightening of the screws drawing the molding toward the body of the partition and the fillers outwardly, the edges of the molding seating against the shoulders of the side members 1-2 and the head of the block seating against-the shoulders of the lips 3 4. It is apparent that with this arrangement, the molding may be drawn into place and should it ever become loosened it may be tightened by forcing the screws farther into the wood fillers, to reseat the members.
While we have referred to the invention as relating to a partition, it has been merely for purposes of illustration and to better describe the improvement, it being apparent that'the construction is adaptable for door and other sheet metal construction, as well as for straight partition work.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. A partition or the like comprising side members, apertured spacers fixed to each side memberk and projecting in the direction ofthe other side member, and a key extending through apertures in the spacers on the opposite side members to hold said side members together and forming a partition unit.
2. A partition or the like comprising sides, spacers fixed to the respective sides and comprising channel and angle iron members, lthe angle iron members having parts located between the sides of the channel iron members on the opposite partition side, and means extending through the channel and angle iron members for holding the same together and forming a unit of the separate partition sides.
