SELF-ADJUSTING OVERHEAD MOTIVE-POWER DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD N. Moon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Adjusting Overhead Motive-Power Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an overhead motive power device, and may be used wherever such devices are necessary or desirable. It is adaptable for supplying power to traverse machines and other attachments used upon lathes, and has been devised particularly for such use in connection with the traverse grinding, milling and drilling machines for lathes, for which United States Letters Patents Nos. 1,073,698, and 1,112,716 were granted to me September 23, 1913, and October 6, 1914, respectively, with a view to making the operation of these machines more eflicient. When such traverse machines are driven by a belt from an overhead source of power, it is necessary that the driving pulley be universally mounted, to follow the driven pulley in vertical, transverse, and longitudinal travel, and it is also of great importance to maintain the proper tension upon the driving belt.
It is the object of my invention, therefore, to provide a device of the class described which will be universally self-adjusting for all positions of the driven device, and which will automatically maintain the proper ten sion upon the driving belt at all times.
To this end my invention consists in the novel overhead motive-power device hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of-my overhead motive power device as applied to driving a lathe attachment. Fig. 2 is a section on the line w00 of Fig. 1, taken in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic sketch showing my device mounted upon a movable crane or portable stand.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 represents a suitably constructed rail or track, which may either be permanently secured to some suitable supports 1, as indicated in Fig. 1, or carried by a movable crane structure or portable stand, as in Fig. 3. Upon the track 1 is a wheel 2 supporting a carnage 3 in which is swiveled at 4 a depending rod or hanger 4. -with a T-.shaped extension 9 to which is secured, by any suitable means, a source of power 10, here indicated as an electric motor.
An oppositely extending arm 11 is fastened to the yoke 8 by the set screws 12, and carries at its outer end a bracket 13, adjustable longitudinally on said arm 11 and clamped thereto by any convenient means, as, for example, the set screws 14. This bracket 13 carries a pulley 15, adapted to be driven by a belt 16 from a pulley 17 mounted upon the shaft of the motor 10. Fixed to the pulley 15 is another pulley 18, adapted to transmit power, as by means of a belt 19, to any desired machine, as, for example, a lathe attachment indicated at 20,Fig. 1 of the drawings,-said attachment being mounted upon a lathe 21.
Since the sleeve 6 is freely rotatable in the head 5 of the supporting hanger 4, the structure, consisting of the slotted yoke 8, which is clamped to said sleeve 6, the motor 10, the arm 11, the bracket 13, with the pulleys 15 and 17 and the belt 16, is pivoted within said head 5, so that the pulley 15 may assume any desired position vertically, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. The proper tension is automatically maintained upon the vertical belt 19 by the weight of the over-hanging motor 10, this tension being adjusted by changing the position of the slotted yoke 8 with respect to its supporting sleeve 6.
Adjustment of the tension of the horizontal belt 16 is obtained by moving the bracket 13 on the arm 11. On account of the swiveled connection between the hanger 4 and the carriage 3, the pulley 15 may follow the driven device 20 transversely of the lathe bed, while the entire structure travels along the rail 1, to follow longitudinal movement of the driven device 20. Thus the driving pulley 15 is universally self-adjusting for any position of the driven device.
As before stated, the track 1 may be supported by a movable crane or portable stand, as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawlngs, where said track 1 is held by an upright crane arm 22, provided with a vertical adjustment indicated at 23, and resting upon suitable legs 24, provided with casters 25. A
counter-weight 26 is provided to balance the weight of the over-hanging parts.
The pulleys 15 and 17 are shown in the drawings as stepped, to allow a variable speed drive for said pulley 15, but any suitable form of pulley may be used. In like manner, other variations may be made in the construction of my device without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not therefore, wish to limit myself in this regard.
I claim 1. An overhead motive power device com prising a rail; a carriage mounted to travel on the rail; a member supported from the carriage by a connection adapting it for arcuate movement horizontally and vertically and for adjustment lineally; a motor carried by said member on one side of its center of vertical arcuate movement and serving as a counterweight therefor; an arm carried by said member on the other side of said center; a lineally adjustable member carriedby said arm; and devices carried by said motor and arm-member for transmitting power to a driven device.
2. An overhead motive power device comprising a rail; a carriage mounted to travel on the rail; a member supported from the carriage by a connection adapting it for arcuate movement horizontally and vertically and for adjustment lineally; a motor carried by said member on one side of its center of vertical arcuate movement and serving as a counterweight therefor; an arm carried by said member on the other side of said center; a lineally adjustable member carried by said arm; and devices carried by said motor and arm-member for transmitting power to a driven device, consisting of a pulley on the motor, pulleys on the armmember, a belt between the motor pulley and one of the arm pulleys, and a belt depending from the other arm pulley for connection with the driven device.

An overhead motive power device com prising a rail; a carriage mounted to travel on the rail, a hanger depending from the carriage and swiveled for axial movement horizontally; a yoke carried by said hanger and connected therewith for pivotal movement vertically and for adjustment lineally; a motor carried by the yoke on one side of its pivotal connection with the hanger and serving as a counterweight, a pulley on said motor; an arm carried by the yoke on the other side of its pivotal connection with the hanger; a bracket lineally adjustable on the free end of the arm; pulleys carried by said bracket; a belt extending from one of said bracket pulleys to the pulley of the motor; and a belt depending from the other bracket pulley for connection with a driven device.
4. An overhead motive power device comprising a rail; a carriage mounted to travel 011 the rail; a depending hanger swiveled in said carriage and having a tubular head on its lower end; a sleeve journaled in said head; a slotted yoke and a bolt clamping said yoke to the sleeve through the slots of the yoke, adapting the latter for pivotal movement and lineal adjustment; a motor carried by said yoke on one side of its pivotal center and serving as a counterweight; a pulley on said motor; an arm carried by the yoke on the other side of its pivotal center; a. bracket lineally adjustable on the free end of the arm; pulleys carried by said bracket; a belt extending from one of said bracket pulleys to the pulley of the motor; and a belt depending from the other bracket pulley for connection with a driven device.
5. An overhead motive power device comprising a. freely traveling carriage; a member suspended from the carriage and adapted for universal movement; a motor carried by and serving as a counterweight for said member; and devices carried by said member and motor for transmitting power to a driven device.
6. An overhead motive power device comprising a freely traveling carriage; a member suspended from the carriage and adapted for arcuate movement horizontally and vertically; a motor carried by said member on one side of its center of vertical arcuate movement and serving as a counterweight therefor; devices carried by said member on the other side of said center of vertical arcuate movement for transmitting power to a driven device; and means for transmitting power from the motor to said powertransmitting devices.
