To all 10 hom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE E. VAN DUSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio,-have invented new and useful Improvements in Smokers Utensils, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to smokers utensils, and the object thereof is to produce a comparatively inexpensive match box holder having simple and efficient means for cutting off the tip of a cigar and also for holding and shielding a lighted match from the wind, he device. being so constructed that to the size and shape of the standard types of pocket boxes of safety matches.

With the foregoing and other objects in my invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In describing the invention, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a front perspective view showing the device holding a box of matches and also holding and shielding a the wind. Fig. 2 is a perspective view from the side and rear showing the match box inclosed for convenient carriage in the pocket. Fig. 3 is a view '-in perspective of the underneath part of the top end on the line XX of Fig. 1.

In an application filed July 6, 1914, Serial No. 19,062 (which application has been allowed), I described and claimed a holder having an open side in communication with an open bottom end and a partially open top'end, as in the present general construction. In that invention, however, a projecting hood was employed on the top end to house the cutting knife and also to provide a notch for holding a match stem. In the present construction the projecting hood is entirely eliminated, the whole device being made to conform snugly to the match box; and the whole device, excepting the cutting knife, being preferably made from a single sheet of material which has portions of one of its ends so fashioned and prepared'that, when secured in position, they provide a housing for the cutting knife and a notch Specification of Letters Patent.

, The knife 30 has a cutting edge 31 on one end and a thumb piece 32 on the other end, while adjacent the thumb piece, it is provided with a longitudinal slot 33. When the knife is arranged in its housing, the lug 24: is inserted in slot 33 thereby preventing the knife from being withdrawn from its housing when moved to its forward position as shown in Fig.3. Thus the cutting knife is slidingly secured in its housing, and is adapted to be drawn forward to permit the tip of a cigar to be entered in aperture 22 and to be pushed backward to cut off the entered tip.

Obviously, the match box is entered through the'open bottom end of the holder, and then advanced until it occupies the position illustrated in Fig. 2. When the match box is partly withdrawn as shown in Fig. 1, a protected air chamber is provided in the top of the holder. If it is desired to light a cigar in the open when the wind is blowing or in any place where there are air currents, the stem of an ignited match is placed in notch 15 so that the flame is held in the protected air chamber thereby safeguarding the flame from being extinguished by the outside air influences.

I prefer to make my invention in the form as above described, the connecting side may be prepared to provide the bottom portion of the head end, while the other extensions or even one of them may be fashioned to make the top or counter portion; or, on the other hand, the head end with its respective features may be made separately the top ends of the sides. Various changes, therefore, in the details of the construction of the head end may be resorted to, provided the principles of construction set forth respectively in the appended claims are employed.

I claim:

1. A device of the character described comprising a box form having two parallel sides and a connecting side, an in-bent extension onthe top end of each of the parallel sides to form a portion of a head including a housing and an opening, an in-bent extension on the top end of the connecting side to complete the head portion including the housing and opening, a knife slidably arranged in the housing thus formed and adapted to be 'reciprocated so that its cutting edge passes said opening.

A device of the character described comprising a box form having two parallel sides and a connecting side, in-bent extensions on an end of the parallel sides to form a head portion and to provide a notch adapted to receive and retain a match stem, an in-bent extension on an end of the connecting side adapted to be united with the aforesaid extensions to provide a housing, a transverse opening in the head portion in communication with the housing, and a knife slidably secured in said housing, which knife is adapted to be operated so that its cutting edge is reciprocated past said opening.

A device of the character described comprising a single sheet of material bent to form two parallel sides and a connecting side, an in-bent portion on the same end of each of the sideswhich portions are adapted to be united to form a head portion including a longitudinal compartment, a transverse aperture in the head portion in communication with said compartment, a notch in the free end of the head portion and adapted to receive and retain a match stem, and a knife arranged in said longitudinal compartment which knife is adapted to be slidably moved to reciprocate its cutting edge past the said aperture.

5. A device of the character described form having two parallel sides and a connecting side, portions inbent at right-angles on an end of the parallel sides and having their inner edges meeting, said in-bent portions being designed to form together a single opening-in their rear ends and a single notch in their front ends, a portion in-bent at right-angles on an end of the connecting side and having a transverse aperture designed to communicate with the single opening and an inverted channel in communication with said aperture, means on the latter in-bent portion for securing it to the former in-bent portions, and a knife slidably arranged in said channel between the former and latter in-bent portions and adapted to have its cutting edge reciprocated past the said aperture.
