Binding posts are very common in the art and have been made in a great variety of forms. The simplest type is that employing anut and washer mounted upon a threaded spindle, said nut and washer 'serv-- ing as a clamping device for binding a terminal connection which has been wound about the threaded spindle. Many forms of clamping devices have been emp oyed in conjunction with binding posts for securing a terminal connection. In-all such devices,

,One of the objects of the present inventlon is to provide a device, with these advantages, which will be of very simple form and may be readily, and cheaply manufactured, insuring proper fitting of the parts.
In Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings, there is shown a simple eccentric arrangement of the parts which provides-for the non-rotary feature of the clampin member yet provides all the elements 0 a universal binding post. In Figs. 6 to 10, there is illustrated an eccentric arrangement of parts which also prevents relative rotation of the bind ing elements. s
In a patent issued tome March 19th, 1912, No. 1,020,457, there is illustrated a binding post in which the clamping elements are of a non-rotary character. In the device shown in said patent, the members must be concentrically arranged with reference to each other and formed with considerable accuracy to.insure properfit and,'of course, where a squared or angular enlargement is employed upon the conducting post of the device, the movable clampin member which fits over said part must be reached out to fit accurately over the enlargement.
In the device herein described, it is possible to use in place of the angular enlargement,a circular enlargement or equivalent means which will have no sharp corners against which the terminal connector must be cramped and which will provide against rotation of the clamping member.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes a base-piece and 2 a cooperating clamping member. The base-piece 1 is of semi-spheroidal form as at 3 and has a cylindrical neck 4 joining it with a cylindrical foot-piece 5 of substantially the same diameter as the largest periphery of the semi-spheroidal part 3. Extending through the base is a threaded opening 6 into which is screwed the shank 7 of a conductorhaving an enlarged portion 8 and an upper screw-threaded portion 9 which is engaged by a clamping nut 10.
The clamping member 2 is of substantially semi-spheroidal form and when set down against the semi-spheroidal section 3 of the base, the two parts provide a spheroidal surface which will receive one type of terminal connection.
The nut 10 is provided at its upper end with a tubular extension 11 which also is of a proper size and form-to receive another terminal connection. Connections of different types may alsobe attached to the reduced portion of the base 4. It will thus be seen that the exterior of the binding post is adapted for receiving connectors of various types and two or more connectors may be used at the same time upon the device.
To prevent relative rotation between the base and the cooperating clamping member 2, the enlarged portion 8 of the conducting post is arranged slightly eccentric to the threaded portions 7 and 9, the latter being in concentric relation to the base 1, clamping member 2 and nut 10. The eccentrically arranged enlargement 8 extends above the upper surface ofthe base-part 3 and presents a smooth round surface about which a terminal connector may be wound without liability of its becoming engaged with the threaded portion of the conducting post. The clamping member 2 has an eccentric perforation 12 adapted to fit over the enlargement 8. This clamping member 2 is in engagement with the nut 10, although said nut is free to turn relatively thereto. Thus, whenever the nut 10 is turned upon the threaded conducting post 9, the clamping member 2 will be raised or lowered with reference to the base 1 although held against relative rotation with reference theretoand with reference to the conducting post by the slightly eccentric arrangement of the enlargement 8. As a convenient means of effecting a connection between the nut 10 and the clamping member, a slight groove is formed in the lower peripheral edge of the nut as at 14. The upper edge 15 of the clamping member 2 is spun into said groove.
This gives an extremely smooth finish to the exterior of the bindingvpost and is all sufficient as a connection between the nut and clamping member.
The conducting post, as illustrated, may extend through the base 1 for any required distance and through: a washer 16 and clamping nut 17, the fixed terminal connection may be secured directly to the conducting post.
In order to provide a direct connection to the conducting post, perforations 18 may be formed through the enlargement on a line with the upper surface of the base and when a conductor is inserted in said perforation, it may be securely held therein by the clamping member 2. p p
From the above it will be seen that the binding post as a whole, is truly universal in its application. The spheroidal outer surface of the clamping member and base provide for one type of terminal connection, the tubular extension 11 for still another, thereduced portion of the base 4 for another, to say nothing of the various forms which may be applied between the clamping member 2 and base part 3. It will also be observed that the base portion, cooperating clamping member and nut at the points of their greatest diameters are substantially uniform and may be made from the same piece of stock. The perforation 12 which fits over the enlargement 8 may be very easily formed without broaching and similarly the conducting post may be readily formed from round stock. The device constructed as herein described obviates the necessity of fine broaching tools and workmanship such as required in the use of stock of angular cross-section and yet provides against the relative rotation of the clamping parts.
In lieu of securing the nonrotative fea-.
tures by means of an enlargement 8 eccentrically arranged with reference to the center of the conducting post, the clamping member may have an eccentric pin as illustrated in Fig. 5.
When the construction of Fig. 5 is used, the enlargement 20 upon a conducting post 21 may be concentric with reference thereto and the recess 22 of the clamping member 23 may also be concentric with reference to the opening 24 through which the threaded stem 25 passes.
A pin 26 may be secured in a drilled hole 27 projecting into the clamping member 23 and extending slightly within the periphery of the recess 22. This pin when engaged with a groove 28 milled from the side of the enlargement 20 will serve to prevent relative rotation of the parts.
Obviously, various arrangements of eccentric members might be employed without departing from the spirit or intent of the invention and in any of said devices, a
substantially smooth. circular, enlargement will be provided about which the terminal conductor may be wrapped and then clamped by the clamping member, with no possibility of a relative rotation of the clamping parts. Furthermore, the device has all the advantages of universal application of connectors and embodies the feature of a direct continuous conducting post formed from a single piece of metal'without joints of any character.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters atent isz] 1. A binding post comprising a base and clamping member, for clamping a wire, said clamping member being concentrlcally arranged with reference to the base and provided with an eccentric opening, an eccentric conducting member of cylindrical form. mounted on the base and having an extended sgindle projecting concentrically through the ase and through the clamping member, said interengaging eccentric conducting part and opening of the clamping member adapted to prevent relative rotation of said clamping members and base as the clampmg member is raised and lowered with reference thereto, and means engaging the spindle and member will be raised and lowered by manipulation .of the nut' to clamp a wire encircling theeccentric enlargement of the conductor.

5. In an electrical connector comprising a base, a clamping member appurtenant thereto, a nut in engagement with said clamping member for raising and lowerin it with reference to the base, a threade spindle intermediate the base and nut, and
meanseccentrically arranged between the base, nut and clamping-member for preventing relative rotation of the clamping member and base while permitting relative axial movement of the clamping member upon the threaded spindle.
