LEVER CONTROL.
Patented'Oct. a, 1916.
Application filed December 30, 1908. Serial No. 469,949.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. TROUT, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain.
ment of the saws by means of fluid pressure,
the return being by means of a weight, thus givinga very simple and efficient means of performing the work.
A clear conceptlon of the invention can be obtained by referring to the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters denote the same parts in different views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an overhead trimmer with the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan of the operating valve mechanism and the piping leading therefrom to the pressure cylinders, three of which are shown. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section of the pressure cylinder. Fig. 4 is an enlarged front elevation of the operating valve mechanism showing the lever arrangement. Fig. 5 is an enlarged central vertical section of the operating valve mechanism taken through one of the valve'chambers. In the general arrangement Fig. '1, the operating valve mechanism 1, controlling the lifting of all the saws, is mounted upon a table 23 which is placed at a convenient height above a platform 24, allowing easy other end 13 is pivoted to the lower endv of the connecting rod'27 and 'to the upper end 'of the link 4. The upper end of the connecting rod 27 1s pivoted to the piston 25, see Fig. 3, by means of a pin 29. This piston 25 can reciprocate in the pressure cylinder 3. The cyllnder 3 is fastened at its upper end to the: base 62 which is attachedto the timber 18. Thepipe2 communicates with the interior of the cylinder 3 through an opening in the base-62. The lower end ofthe link 4 is pivoted to the extreme end 51 of thelifting lever 5.
This lifting lever 5 swings about the pivot 19 at its opposite end and supports the saw shaft 52 in a bearing 53 at some point intermediate its ends 51, 19. Thesaw shaft 52 supports the saw 6 andthe driving pulley 81. The saw 6 is rotatedthrough the medium of the belt 7 which drives the pulley 81 and is driven by the pulley 8. Thejpul ley 8 is fixed to the shaft 20 which is supported by the bearing 82. p
The lifting lever 5has, a stop 42 provided near the bearing 19 which limits its downward travel. This is to prevent the saw 6" from dropping too far below the surface of the trimmer table9 on which the lumber to be cut is conveyed to the saw 6. jAnother stop 41 may be provided to limit the upward travel of the lifting lever '5,although this is limited by the travel of the piston 25 in the cylinder 3.
The operating valve mechanism,-see Figs. 4 and 5, is so constructed as to allow the adjustment of a series of trimmer saws with the one valve mechanism. This is shown by the piping arrangement, see Fig. 2, in which each pipe 2, leading from the operating valve mechanism 1,'suppliesfluid to adjust each separate trimmer saw. The fluid inlet 7 22, see Fig. 5, leads into the chamber 45 contained in the body 34 and extending through- .out its entire length. The valves 37 which 100 erally broadened at'their upper ends and 105 formed with a recess to accommodate the finger of theoperator. They arearranged closely adjacent to one another, this being possible because of. the formation. of the leversfor engagement from above by the 110 operator, thus providing a compact operating means at a central point of control. The thumb levers 33 swing about the shaft 40 and operate the valves 37. For this purpose the valves 37 have stems 83 passing through enlarged openings in the levers 33, and these stems carry nuts 38 at their outer ends.
To the extremities of the shaft 40 are secured the levers 32. The levers 32 are connected intermediate their length by a rod 39 passing through openings 93 in the thumb levers 33, the openings 93 being elongated circumferentially about the shaft 40. Each lever 32 carries a pin 36 extendinglaterally therefrom. A spring 35 is conveniently fastened at one end to the valve body 34 in any convenient way as by being riveted to stud 63. The spring 35 is bent to form three recesses to serve as stops for the pins 36. Two of these recesses serve as limiting stops while the third serves as a stop for the pins 36 in some intermediate position.
The valve body 34has longitudinally extending I therein chambers 44, 45. The valves 37 are seated in ports 50 which pass through the body 34 above the chambers 44, 45 at right angles to'these chambers.
Around each of these ports 50 there are two annular spaces 41, 42 which connect to the chambers 44, 45 below them. Intermediate these annular spaces 41, 42 there is a third annular space 43 which opens into the pipe 2 above it. The chambers 44, 45 have pipes 21, 22, respectively leading into them from below. The valves 37 have re duced portions located between, and of length slightly less than the distance between, the annular spaces 41, 42.
The operation of the valves 37 collectively is accomplished by moving the levers 32 from their mid-position, as shown in Fig. 5, to either of the extreme limits of their motion. The rod 39 carried by these levers will thus simultaneously come into contact with similar ends of the enlarged openings 93 in levers 33 and will move said levers, thus operating valves 37.
If a valve 37 is moved toward the right, referring to Fig. 5, theannular space 42 is made to connect with its corresponding annular space 43 by a passage afforded by the reduced portion of the valve 37 Fluid is thus admitted to the corresponding cylinder 3 and the saw is depressed into trimming position. If the valve 37 is moved toward the left, the annular space 41 is made to connect in the same way with theannular space 43, annular space 42 being cut off. The fluid in the cylinder 3 is thereby exhausted and the weight 10 serves to elevate the saw 6 out of trimming position.
In order to operate the valves individually, levers 32 must be held in the mid-position by the spring 35. This will then allow the levers 33 to be individually moved to operate the valve without coming in contact with rod 39.
It should be understood that it is not desired to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
It is claimed and desired to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a mechanism for controlling a plurality of individually controllable devices from a central point of control, a series of individual levers each connected to one of said devices, each of said levers having a pair of spaced abutment surfaces thereon, a master lever, and a rod carried by said master lever and lying between the abutment surfaces of said individual levers, said master lever being operable to bring said rod into contact with either of said abutment surfaces of said individual levers.
2. In a mechanism for controlling a plurality of individually controllable devices from a central point of control, a series of individual levers each connected to one of said devices, each of said levers having an elongated opening therein, a master lever, and a rod carried by said master lever and lying within the openings of said individual levers, said master lever being operable to bring said rod into contact with said individual levers at either end of sair elongated openings.
'3. In a, mechanism for controlling a plurality of individually controllable devices from a central point of control, a series of individual levers each connected to one of said devices, said levers having alined openings therein, a master lever, and a rod carried by said master lever and lying within the openings of said individual levers, said master lever being operable to bring said rod into contact with said individual levers at either end of said openings.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in the presence oftwo witnesses.
lVILLIAM H. TROUT.
