To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ARTHUR L. BUTCHER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheel Painting or Priming Machines, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relates to an improved wheel painting or priming machine.
The objects ofthis invention are: First, to provide automatic means for efiectively painting, orpriming the wheel, it being simply required to place the wheel in the machine and remove the same, all other operations being automatic. Second, to provide improved means of raising and lowering and regulating the m'ovementsof the paint tank. Third, in. such a machine to provide improved means of spinning the wheel and timing its operation.
Further objects, and objects relating to nd economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.

Before proceeding with 'a detailed description of this invention, it is desired to )state its structure and operation in a general way to facilitate the proper understanding of the detailed description. The paint tank 8 is provided with raising and lowering 'means which are operated by the main cam 45 and roller 48 on the arm 21, first, to raise the tank to in effect, dip the wheel, and second, then partially lowerthe tank so that the upper portion above the contained paint embraces the Wheel and maintains the same there while the wheel is spinning, whereby the centrifugal force throws ofi all of the surplus paint, and third, then drop the tank to its lowest or initial position when the Wheel can be removed. A second cam means on the main cam shaft serves to throw a clutch that throws thewheel spinning means into gear and timed to be operated after the wheel has'been dipped and while the same is still in the upper portion of thetank. An adjustable timing means is provided in this connection whereby the length of time that the wheel is spun at this particular elevation of the tank can be regulated. A third cam-is provided which serves to elevate the wheel spinning spindle and carry with it the wheel driving means, and a latch lever is the face plate 7 secured thereto.
provided for automatically locking the spinner in the elevated position. A fourth cam stop means is provided for throwing'the machine out of gear on the completion of its revolution. Thus in operation the operator simply places a wheel in the machine, lowers the wheel spinning means into position by unlatching the hand lever and drops the same down. He then depresses the starting foot lever to throw the machine into gear, which foot lever throws the cam stop means out of engagement and permits the machine to go through its cycle of operation.
Considering the numbered parts of the drawing, the base plate 1 supports the right and left end frames 2 and 3. The said-end frames are connected at their tops by a suitable top bar 4. Between the end frames and secured to them is the wheel face plate yoke 5. In the said yoke is journaled the lower wheel pivot 6, (see Fig. III) having face plate is adapted to engage the inside rim of the brake drum of'an automobile wheel and the spindle 6 is adapted to fit in and plug the lower end of the hub of the The said 7 wheel. Beneath the yoke 5 and mounted on slides 11 carried in vertical ways 11' in the end frames 2 and 3 is the paint tank 8. To-
ward its top, the tank 8 is provided with tents are connected by cables 13 running over pulleys 14 to the slide plates 11.
Each slide plate is connected by a link 15, see Fig. V, to a raising lever 16 suitably fulcrumed on bracket 16 secured to each end frame. Each lever 16 is connected by a rocker arm link 17 to a rock shaft arm 18 secured on the rock shaft 19 supported in bearings in the end frames and bearing block' 20. The linkage is duplicated at each side of the tank, see Figs. III. and V. The paint tank is raised and lowered at the proper time by suitable connections acted upon by a cam upon the main cam shaft.
Actuating rock arm 21 for rocking the shaft 19 is secured toward the right hand end of said shaft, the same being adjustable within comparatively narrow limits by means of the bracket 22, which is fixed on the end of the shaft and provided ith lugs 23, 23 embracing the said rock shaft arm 21, which is adjustable therebetween by means of the set screws 24, see Figs. I and IV. This arm 21' is actuated by the edge cam 45 keyed to the main cam shaft 42. Shaft 42 is journaled on bracket 43 at its right hand end and in the worm wheel casing 44, secured-to the end frame 2 at its other end. Arm 21 is provided with cam roller 48 which is held yieldingly against the cam 45 by the weight of tank 8 and its contents and connected parts, which, however, as has already been pointed out, are
partially supported by counter-weights 12.
The cam 45 revolves as indicated by the arrow, see Fig. IV, and begins its operation with the tank in its lowermost position and raises the same by the action of the rise A on the roller 48 to its highest position, then lowers the same by the drop B to the dwell C where the tank is held with its contained bracket 25, see Figs. I, II and III. Suitably journaled in a bushing secured in the said bracket is the wheel spinning driving shaft 26 having the beveled pinion 27 at one end thereof. Meshing with pinion 27 and suitably journaled in the said bar is the driven spindle beveled gear 28. Within gear 28 and feather-keyed to the same and journaled in the bracket 25 is the wheel driving spindle 29. At the lower end of spindle 29 is secured the wheel driver 30 having-depending studs 31. In the end of spindle 30 and secured thereto by a tapered fit is the upper center 31 which is adapted to engagethe upper end of the wheel hub. These centers are interchangeable to accommodate different sizes and makes of wheel. The two-piece gear casing covering 33 is adapted to cover and protect the gears 27 and 28, as shown.
Spindle 29 is adjusted up and down by lever 35 which embraces the sleeve 34 by the collar 34', see the detailed detached parts in Figs. I'and III. The lever 35 is fulcrumed on links 36 which are pivoted to the brackets 37 on the top of end frame 2. (Seethis connection detailed in Figs. I, II and III.) Lever 35 is provided with ya counterweight'38. Link 39 connects by rod 40 to the hand latch lever 41 whereby the said hand lever may be manually depressed to force the lever 35 and spindle 29 and wheel spinner into engagement with the wheel to be painted. The hand latch lever 41 latches only in its elevated position, where it serves to retain the lever 35 until it is manipulated. The lever 35 isautomatically elevated by the cam 46 mounted adjacent to the cam. 45 on the shaft 42, see
Figs. I, II, III and XVI. This cam is provided with a rise 46, which serves, by its action upon theicam roller 128 carried on the rock lever 129 which isfulcrumed at 74, i
to pull down the outer end of the lever 35. This is accomplished by the rods 130 and 131 adjustable by turn-buckle 132, which rods arec'onnected by link 133, (see Figs.
- I, II, III and XVI)-j to the lever 35. The
cam 46 is'timed to perform its function ofv pulling down on lever 35 at the end of the entf e operation of the machine, the rise 46' of the cam passing entirely under the cam roller 128 so that when the latch lever 41 is released it can be manipulated to pull down the lever '35 and force the wheel spinner into place.
The means for timing the spinning of the wheel and its duration are comprisedin a compound cam mechanism, the face of which is detailed in Fig. VIII. The main cam 47 is on the main cam shaft 42 and revolves in the direction of the arrow seen in Fig. VIII. The cam acts upon the' cam roller 72 carried by the bent lever 73 which is fulcrumed on shaft 74 carried by bracket 7 5, which is secured to the cam shaft bracket 43, and by bracket 76 which is secured to end frame 2.
The upper end of the bent lever 73 is connected by the link 77 to the knuckle 78, (Fig. X) pivoted to the auxiliary bell crank 79. Bell crank 79 is fulcrumed on a suitable pivot 80 securedto the top of frame 2. Also secured to the hub of bell crank 79 is the weight arm 81 having the weight 82 at the end thereof. Loosely mounted on the pivot 80 is the auxiliary weight arm 83 having ereo the auxiliary weight 84 at the end th Secured to the auxiliary-weight arm 83 is the overhanging arm 85, the overhang of which carries the adjustable stop screw 86 having the lock nut 87. Stop screw 86 is in line with weight arm 81 so that as the latter is raised, it will contact with the said screw and raise weight 84, as hereinafter described. The other arm of hell crank 79 (see Fig. X) is connected by the link 88, having the adjustable turn-buckle 88', Fig. II), to the clutch shifter 89, (Figs. and XVII).
The clutch shifter 89 is the usual two piece lever suitably fastened together and having the clutch pin 90 adapted toi engage the annulus in the clutch cone 91. The ends of the shifter are pivoted on the pin 92 secured in the bracket 93 fastened to the end frame 3. Bracket 93 also serves as the bearing for the wheel. spinner driving shaft 26. On said shaft 26 is loosely mounted the spindle driving pulley 94, with which is also integrally formed the driven clutch member 95 adapted to coact with the clutch cone 91. Cone 91 is feather-keyed to the shaft 26. On the end of shaft 26 is secured the brake wheel 96, (Fig. XVIII). Around brake wheel 96 is the brake band 97, one side of which is secured to the clip 98 suitably slotted and retained by the pin 99 passing through the said slot and secured in the brake band bracket-100 fastened to end frame 3. The
free'ends of brake band 97 are secured to the upper and lower clips 101 and 102, respectively, which have their ends suitably slotted. In the sl'ottedendsof-the said clips is located the pin 103 which screws into the bracket 100 and is secured at its upper en to'clip 101 by the lock nuts 104;
The upper hub end 105' of brake lever 105 is journaled on the pin 103. The upper end of lever 105 is connected by the turn buckle 106 and the knuckles 107 to the pin pivot 88 which connects lever 88 and the clutch shifter 89, as shown in Fig. XVII. The hub 105'- at the lower end of brake lever 105 has a V-cam groove in the top face thereof -which is adapted to coact with a similar V- end of the brake band tightening nut 108 also on pin 103. The top of nut 108 is notched and engages. the end of clip 102,
lever 105 is turned on the pin 103, the nut I 109, (Fig. XII) to the arm 110 of the movable clutch actuating member 111 which is loosely mounted on the timing clutch shaft 112, (Fig. XIII) suitably secured in the timing shaft bracket 37 fastened toend plate 2. The stationary clutch actuating member 114, mounted on shaft 112, is fastened by screws to the bracket 37, as shown.
Projecting from the face of the clutch ac-- tuating member 111 is a rib 115 semi circular in cross section, (Fig. XIV). Rib 115 is adapted to engage a corresponding groove 116, (Fig. XV) of the clutch actuating member 114. The combination gear and clutch Wheel 117 is journaled to shaft 112 and in mesh with driving pinion 118 suitably secured to shaft 118 journaled in bracket 37 and driven from'pulley 119. On the end of shaft 112 is secured the collar 124. Between the said collar andtiming.
cam part 122, hereafter described, a spring washer 123 fits loosely on the said shaft. The said washer serves to keep the cone 120 in yielding engagement with clutch wheel 117, -although the former, for apart of the cycle of the machine, is held stationary by a suitable stop means hereinafter described, the said washer being so tensioned as to permit this to take place. The clutch cone 120 is also loosely journaled on shaft 112, this cone having the usual friction band on the face thereof to coact with the clutch wheel 117. On the web of clutch cone 120 is secured the timing cam made up of the adjustable parts 121 and 122, (Figs. VIII and XIII). Part 122 is secured to part 121 by the set screws 123 passing through suitable slots in said part 122.
Fulcrumed to the lower end of bracls't 37 is a three-arm bell crank lever 125, (Fig. VIII). The upper arm 125 of this bell crank has a cam roller at the end thereof which is adapted to ride on the timing cam 121122. The middle arm 125" of the said bell crank 125 is connected by the rod 126 and the turn buckle 61 and slotted block 60 on pin 59 to the trip lever 57.
The actuation of the trip lever 57 by the upward pull on the rod 126 throws the driving means for the main cam shaft 42 out of gear by disconnecting the driving clutch by means that will be explained hereafter in conjunction with such clutch and driving means and its starting connections. When'bent lever 73 is acted upon by the rise'D in the cam 47, it, through connecting link 77 and the linkage and connections hereinbefore described, throws the spinning clutch into engagement and by the link 109 acting on arm 110, the clutch ring 117 is thrown in and begins to drive the timing cam 121--122.
On the face of cam 47 is a trip pin 127 which comes into engagement with the beveled end of arm 125" of the lever 125 when the roller 72 contactswith the rise D of cam 47 and swings lever 125" clockwise and thereby causes it to pull up the connection 126 and ,stop the main cam shaft 42 when the said trip 127 is well past the arm 125', and the cam 121-122 passes under the roller at the end of arm 125 and the wheel spinner continues to act until the drop at the end of the high dwell of the cam 121122 is reached. This will permit the counter movement of the lever 125 and as the trip mechanism is weighted, the driving gear for the main shaft 42 will again be thrown in, carrying the cam 47 forward and the roller 72 will now hear on the upper dwell. When the end of the said dwell is reached the said roller will drop to the lower dwell reversing the bent lever 73 and releasing the two clutches which were thrown in, thereby stopping the spinning of the Wheel and the further travel'of the said timing cam 121-122. The pin 71 on the opposite face of the cam 47 is now moved into engagement with the trip lever 57, pushes down the inner end thereof and again throws the main driving clutch. out of gear and the entire machine comes to a stand-still. (See Figs. VIII and XI.)
On the main cam shaft 42 is the worm gear contained in the housing 44 which is driven by the worm 69 on the driving shaft 67, the same being supported in. suitable bearings 44. The shaft is driven by pulley 68, the hub of which forms one clutch memher. The cone 66 of the clutch slideson the shaft 67 and is keyed thereon. A bracket ,50 is the weight arm 51 having the weight 52 at the end thereof. Compression spring 56 urges said rocker shaft to the right, of Fig. IX. On one end of the end arms of the said. bracket is pivoted trip arm 53, said trip arm being L-shaped and one end adapted to coact against the side of weight arm 51 to move it and shaft 50 lengthwise against spring 56. The other endof arm 53 is connected by the link 54 to foot pedal 56 pivoted on pin 55'-to the base plate 1,
clutch yoke 63, see Fig. VI, as already de scribed.
To start the machine, the operation is as follows: A wheel is placed on the plate 7, the hub of the same fitting over the spinner pivot 6 and the brake drum of the same engaging a suitable ring of the said plate. The operator then releases the hand lever 41 and pushes down on the same, which lowers the spindle 29 by the link 40 and the lever 35. The studs 31 are thereby positioned between the spokes of the wheel while the center plug 32 covers the upper end of the wheel hub. The spindle, however, is so balanced by means of the counterweight 38 that the same will stay in the down position when once lowered. Hand lever 41, however, is not caught in the said down position of spindle 29. After the spindle has been lowered, the operator steps on the trip pedal 55. This tilts the trip arm 53, and the vertical end of the same coacts with the weight arm 51, sliding the same and the rocker shaft 50 lengthwise in the bracket 49. With the rocker shaft 50 thus removed, the rocker arm 58 and the lever 57 are displaced with the same, the various connections to these parts permitting this movement. Lever 57 will thereby disengage the cam roller 71 and the weight 52 will now drop, rocking rocker shaft 50, and the arm 58 by means of link 62 throws in clutch cone 66. Pin 59 plays in slotted block 60 without function at this time. The driving wheel 68 will then actuate the worm gear 70 by worm 69 thereby turning the cam shaft 42 and the cams 45, 46 and 47 thereon. The weight 52 is so proportioned and set on arm 51, that a secure engagement of the starting clutch is insured. The initial position of the clutch and brake cam 47 is shown in Figs. VIII and XI, and of the tank rais ing and lowering cam 45 in Fig. IV and the wheel release cam 46 is shown at its acting point in' Fig. XVI. When the machine is started, tank 8 isin its lowermost position. As soon. as cam shaft 42 commences revolv ing, the rise A of cam 45 actson roller 48 (Fig. IV), the former revolving in the direction of the arrow. This thereby swings the cam lever 21 outward and by means of shaft 19 and the linkage connected thereto, raises tank 8 to its full height. The wheel to be painted, which has been previously placed on the center plate 7, is thereby to-' tally immersed in the paint. During this short period of the cycle of the machine, the

controlling cam 47. After the paint tank has reached its maximum height, the same is lowered a short distance by theaction of the drop B on cam 45 on the cam roller 48.v
The tank is then held in this position the wheel having thus been dipped and ready to spin and being-disposed in the upper part of the tank above the paint, b the said roller bearing on the dwell 0. he rise D on cam 47 acting on roller 72 actuates the bent lever 73, which through link 77, bell crank 79, link 88 throws in clutch cone 91, and as pulley 94 is continually driven from an outside belt, spindle 29 will be set inmotion, the brake being released at the same time as already explained, thereby starting the spinning interval. Upon the actuating of bell crank 79, as described, the weight arm 81 with the weight 82, is lifted, and the former contacting with the stop screw 86 of the arm 85 to which is fastened the weight arm 83, lifts the latter. The wheel will now be rapidly spun and the centrifugal force of the same will throw off the surplus paint, all-of which is caught by the tank sides and the flanged rim thereof.
The duration of the is controlled by the timing cam 121122 and cam 47., Simultaneously with the actuation of bent lever 73, link 109, (Figs. XII to XV inclusive). will be operated to partially rotate gage the tongue 115 froin the groove 116 thereby sliding the same along shaft 112. This in turn slides the clutch wheel 117 along the said shaft, against the pressure of spring washer 123', and engages the clutch cone 120. As the pinion 118 is continually turning by belt wheel 119 the cams 121 and 122 will now be rotated. As bell crank 125 is rotated as above described the roller on the arm 125 will be in position to bear on the upper dwell of the said cam.
Upon the actuation of bell crank 125 by trip 127 as hereinabove described, the rod 126 will be lifted, thereby lifting the slotted member 60, the lower end of which will engage the pin 59 of the cam stop lever 57 thus partially turning the shaft 50 to which the said lever issecured. The operation of said shaft 50 lifts weight 52, and actuates rocker arm 58 and through link 62 withdraws the cone 66 from driving wheel 68 whereby shaft 67 comes to rest, whlch 111 turn stops cam shaft 42. When the cam 47 is stopped trip. 127 is out of any possible contact with bell crank 125. As roller 72 of be kept spinning. During the stopping of the cam 47, cams 121 and 122 are being rotated and the roller on the upper arm of bell crank 125 bearing on the upper dwell of the same cams, keeps clutch cone 66 disen-v gaged. However, when the end of the upper dwell on cam 122 is reached, the roller. on the said bell crank drops off the same against the lower dwell. This, therefore, drops the link 126 and the slotted member 60 connected thereto and the weight '52 drops,
which engages the clutch cone 66 and the driving wheel 68 by the above described 'disengages the above m ntioned clutches.
When the said clutch 111-114 is disengaged the roller on the end of arm 125 has not reached the end of the lower dwell on cam 121122 and the spring washer 123' will now continue to keep the clutch members .117120 engaged until the said roller engages the shoulder at the upper and lower dwell of the said cam. This therefore stops the same, as the said washer permits slip-' ping between the clutch members 117-120.
' The actuating of the linkage connecting'bell crank 73 operates brake lever 105 which lifts the brake band nut 108 tightening the brake band 97 on the wheel 96 and bringing the driving shaft 26 and spindle 29 to rest.
As the weights 82 and 84are lifted when the clutch cone 91 engages the clutch'wheel 95, the same. will drop when disen agement takes place as just described. The ropping ofdtheltwo weights insure a prompt actuating of the connecting linkage and brake means and a quick disengagement of the clutch 111 -114. The lower weight 84 was added to weight. 82 to disengage the said clutch means although the former after the said disengagement takes place is brought to rest by falling on the bracket 7 6.
' The greater portion of cam 46v Fig. XVI) consists of a circumferential dwell. However, immediately after the spindle has been stopped, the rise 46. ,on the said cam acts on roller 128. "This roller is on one' end of the rock lever 129 suitably j-ournaled on the bent lever shaft 74.. roller 71 commences to bear against the said eccentric portion of lever 57. This,'therefore, tilts the same and turns the rocker shaft 50 and by the connections thereto, disengages clutch cone 66 from the driving wheel 68, thereby bringing the cam shaft to rest. When the said shaft is brought to rest,
roller 71 still engages arm 57, holding the weight arm 51 in its up position and the machine is thus ready foranother cycle. The wheel is thus painted and is then manually removed from the face plate 7.
It is evident that with cam 121-122 as secured on cam 121, the length of the upper dwell maybe varied andthe duration of the length of the spin of the wheel changed as desired. This is the entire purpose of these two cams and therefore permits varying the spinning to meet requirements both as to size of wheels and conditions generally. With the various turn-buckles and other adjustmentswhich I have used, the machine may be quickly and properly set to accommodate its purpose.
There is shown herein the particular kind and arrangement of cams that effectively-do their work, but it is desired to state that such cams are the preferred form. It is desired to claim them as they are, and it is also desired to claim such cam means broadly, as it is conceived that by making use of the face and the edges and the stops thereon itwould be easily possible to lessen the number of cams. Where adjustments are provided, of course, it ,is only to meet conditions, and where a single size and a single condition is tobe met, all adjustments might be avoided and the machine-would perform its functions.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in detail in the form in'which I have embodied the same for the market.
I have not attempted to illustrate or describe improvements specifically. the form illustrated as well as broadly within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a wheel painting machine, the com bination with the frame, of a wheel supporting yoke with a pivotal center therein for supporting the wheel to' be painted, a wheel spinner with means to engage the spokes of the wheel adapted to engage the wheel and plug the center thereof, a tank for paint with an inturned flange toward the top suitably up and down to ip the wheel and provide an inclosure within which to spin the same, a main cam shaft for carrying operative cams, a driving means, a clutch and connection for throwing the same into and out of gear, a cam with connections for raising the paint tank to dip the wheel and lowering the same to the spinning position and finally loweringthe same to its lowermost position, a lever adjusting means held yieldingly in position for holding the spinner into engagement with the wheel, a releasing cam for raising the spinner out of engagement with the wheel, alatch lever for controlling the' spinner raising means adapted to lock in the uppermost position, a clutch for said wheel spinn driving means, a spinner controlling cam means timed to throw the spinning clutch into gear when the paint tank is at the proper elevation for spinning the wheel, a brake means for checking the spinner on the completion of the splnning operation, a spinner timing means with connections to the spinner controlling cam for regulating the period of rotation of'the spinner, a trip means in connection with the spinner controlling cam to throw the main clutch out, the trip being engaged by the spinner timing means and the clutch thus held out during the spinning operation, a clutch operating lever for the main clutch adapted to move laterally on its fulcrum, means for holding the same yieldingly in position, a cam trip pin on the spinner controlling cam for acting on the said clutch operating lever to throw the main clutch out and hold it out, thus stopping the machine, a trip lever for moving the said clutch lever laterally to release it from the said cam trip pin, and a weight means to actuate the said lever to throw the clutch'into gear to start the machine, coacting as specified.
2. In a wheel painting machine, the com bination with the frame, of a wheel supporting yoke with a pivotal center therein for supporting the wheel to be palnted, a wheel spinner with means to engage the spokes of the'wheel adapted to engage the wheel and plug the center thereof, a tank for paint withan inturned flange toward the top suitably guided to be reciprocated up and down ided to be reciprocatedv to dip the wheel and provide an inclosure within which to spin the same, a main cam shaft for carrying operative cams, a driving means, a clutch and connection for throwing the same into and out of gear, a cam with connections for raising the paint tank with connections to the spinner controllingcam for regulating the period of rotation of the spinner, a trip means in connection with the spinner controlling cam to throw the main clutch out, the trip being engaged by the spinner timing means and the clutch thusheld out during the spinning operation, a clutch operating lever for the main clutch adapted to move laterally on its fulcrum, means for holding the same yieldingly in position, a cam trip pin on the spinner controlling cam for acting on the said clutch operating lever to throw the main clutch out and hold it out, thus stoppingv the machine, a trip lever for moving. the said clutch lever laterally to release it fromthe said cam trip pin, and a weight means to actuate the said lever to throw the clutch into gear, to start the machine, coacting as specified. 3. In a wheel painting machine, the combination with the' frame, of a wheel supporting yoke with a pivotal center therein for supporting the wheel to be painted, a wheel spinner with means to engage the spokes of the wheel adapted to engage the wheel and plug the center thereof, a tank for paint with an inturned flange toward the top suitably guided to be reciprocated up and down to dip the wheel and provide an inclosure within which to spin the same, a main cam shaft for carrying operative cams, a driving means, a clutch and connection for throwing the same into and out of gear, a cam with connections for raising the 'paint tank to d1p the wheel and lowering the same to the spinning position and finally lowering the same to its. lowermost position, a clutch for. said wheel spinner driving means, a spinner controlling cam means timed to throw. the spinnlng 'clutch into gear when the paint tank is at the proper elevation for spinning the wheel, a spinner timing means with connections to the spinner controlling cam for regulating the period of rotation of thespmner, a clutch op'eratinglever for the mam clutch adapted to move laterally on its fulcrum, means for holding the same yieldingly in position, a cam trippin on the spinner controlling cam for actmg on the said clutch operating leverto throw the main clutch out and hold it out, thus stopping the machine, a trip lever ,for moving the said clutch lever laterally to'release it from the said cam trip pin, and a weight means to actuate the said lever to throw the clutch.

5. In a wheel painting machine, the combination with the frame, of a wheel supporting yoke with a pivotal center therein for supporting thewheel to be painted, a; wheel spinner with means toengage the spokes of the wheel adapted to engage the wheel and plug the center thereof, a tank for paint with an inturned flange toward the top suitably guided to be reciprocated up and down to dip the wheel and provide an inclosure within which to spin the same, a main cam shaft for carrying operative cams, a driving means, a clutch and connection for throwing the same into and out of gear, a cam with connections for raising the paint tank to dip the wheel and lowering the same to the spinning position and finally lowering the same to its lowermost position, a lever adjusting means held yieldingly in position for holding the spinner into engagement with the wheel, a releasing cam for raising the spinner out of engagement with the wheel, a latch lever for controlling the spinner raising means adapted to lock in the uppermost position, a clutch for said wheel spinner driving means, a spinner controlling cam means timed to throw the spinning clutch into gear when the paint tank is at the proper elevation for spinning the wheel,- a brake means for checking the spinner on the completion of the spinning operation, a spinner timing means with connections to the spinner controlling cam for regulating the period of rotation of the spinner, a trip means in connection with the spinner con trolling cam to throw the main clutch out, the trip being engaged by the spinner timing means and the clutch thus held out during the spinning operation, a trip means for automatically stopping the machine, and a starting means whereby the machine may be thrown into gear by the operator, coacting as specified.
6. In a wheel painting machine, the combination with the frame, of a wheel supporting yoke with a pivotal center therein for supporting the wheel to be painted, a wheel spinner with means to engage the spokes of the wheel adapted to engage the wheel and plug the center thereof, a tank for paint with an inturned flange toward the top suitably guided to be reciprocated up and down to dip the wheel and provide an inclosure within which to spin the same, a main cam shaft for carrying operative cams, a driving 7 means, aclutch and connection for throwing the same into and out of gear, a cam with connections for raising the paint tank to dip the wheel and lowering the same to the spinning position. and finally lowering the same to its lowermost position, a clutch for said wheel spinner driving means, a spinner controlling cam means timed to throw the spinning clutch into gear when the paint tank is at the proper elevation for spinning the wheel, a spinner timing means with connections to the spinner controlling cam for regulating the period of rotation of'thespinner,
a trip means in connection with the spinner controllingcam to throw the main clutch out, the trip being engaged by the spinner timing means and the clutch thus held'out during the spinning operation, a trip means for automatically stopping the machine, and a starting means whereby the machine may be thrown into gear by the operator, coacting as specified. 1
7. In a wheel painting machine, the combination with the frame, of a wheel supporting yoke with a pivotal center therein for supporting the wheel to be painted; a wheel spinner with means ,to' engage the spokes of the wheel adapted to engage the wheel and plug the center thereof, a tank for paint with an inturned flangetfoward the top suitably guided to be reciprocated up and down to dip the wheel and provide an inclosure within which to spin the same, a main 'cam shaft for carrying operative cams, a driving means, a clutch and connection for throwing the same into and out of gear, a cam with connections for raising the paint tank'to dip the wheel and lowering the same to the spinning position and finally lowering the same to its lowermost position, a clutch for said wheel spinner driving means, a spinner controlling cam means timed to throw the spinning clutch into gear when the paint tank is, at the proper elevation for spinning the wheel,
atrip means for automatically stopping the machine, and a starting means whereby the machine maybe thrown into gear by 'the operator, coacting as specified.
9. In a wheel painting machine, the combination of a frame, a support for the wheel provided with a suitable spinning center, a spinner for said wheel with means for adjusting the same into engagement with a 1 wheel, a tank for paint, means for raising the same to dip the wheel and lowermg the same to embrace the wheel during the spinning operation, a driving means for said tank elevating'mechanism, driving means connected to the said spinner, cam means associated with the tank elevating means for automatically throwing the said spindle driving means in and out of gear, trip means for automatically stopping the machine, and a starting means whereby the machine may be thrown into gear by the operator, coacting for the purpose specified.
10. In a wheel painting machine, the combination of a frame, a spinner for said wheel, a tank for paint, means for raising same to embrace the wheel during the spinning operation, a driving means for said tank elevating mechanism, driving .means connected to the said spinner, cam means associated with the tank elevating means for automatically throwing the said spindle driving means in and out of gear, trip means for automatically stopping the machine, and a starting means whereby the machine may be thrown into gear by the pipgrator, coacting for the purpose specie 11. 16. In a wheel .palntlng machine, thecombination with the frame, of a wheel supporting yoke with a pivotal center therein for supporting the wheel tobe painted, a wheel spinner adapted to engage the wheel to spin the same, a tank for paint adapted to cooperate with the said wheelsupport and spinner, a clutch for said wheel spinner driving means, a spinner controlling cam means timed to throw the spinning clutch into gear when the paint tank is at the proper elevation for spinning the wheel, and a trip means in connection with the spinner controlling cam to throw the main clutch out, the trip being engaged by the spinner timing means and the clutch thus held out during the spinning operation.

21. In a wheel painting machine, the combination with the frame, a wheel support, a wheel spinner, a tank cooperating with the same, a main cam shaft for carrying operative cams with a clutch-for throwing the same into gear, a clutch for said wheel spinner driving means, a spinner controlling cam means timed to throw the spinning clutch into gear when the paint tank is at the proper elevation for spinning the wheel, and a brake means for checking the spinner 1 on the completion of the spinning operation, coacting as specified.
