l Coshocton, in the county of Coshocton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Itmprovements in Vheat-Fans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvedv fan for winnowingwheat, rye and other grains and separating the same from the chaff, dirt and other impurities and the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved fan of this character which is compact, is simple in construction, is provided with a movable receptacle for thedirt particles and refuse grain, in which part of the air blast from the blower is caused to pass under the discharge of the feed hopper.

In the accompanying drawings z-F igure 1 is aside elevation of a grain fan constructedy in accordance with` my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. The frame 1 is rectangular and may be of the construction here .shown or of any other suitable construction. The casing comprises verticalV side walls 2, a vertical rear wall 3, a downwardly and forwardly inclined bottom 4 and the front end` of the casing is formed by the semi-cylindrical wall 5 of the blast fan casing and the semi-cylindrical drum 6 whichis above the blast fan casing. The lower side of the blast fan casing extends forwardly and upwardly as at 7, parallel with and is spaced from the inclined bottom of the main casing so that a flue 8 is formed between them and which discharges at the front end of the machine Specication of LettersPatent, Patented Sept. 26, 1916.
and underthe blast fan casing as at 9. An apron 10 1s also provided which comprises al vertical wall 11 anda rearwardly and upwardly extending curved,V4 upper wall 12.
The wall 11 extends transversely ofthe machine between the side walls 10 of the casing andparallel with and at a suitable dis tance in front of the rear wall 3 and the upper wall 12 of the apron extends rear- ,wardly above and is spaced from said rear wallv 3 so that a. discharge flue 18 for the chaff and other light particles is formed betweenthe said apron and the rear wall 3.
A dividing` board 14E4 is also arranged transversely inthe machine casing and extends between the side walls thereof, this dividing board 4being downwardly and forwardly inclined and spaced a suitable distance from the apron 10 and being in advance of the apron. At the lower side of the dividing board is a. downwardly and rearwardly inclined reflector 15 which also extends downwardly and forwardly and terminates 1nv a fia-nge 16 on thefront side and at the lower-edge of a. wall 17. A vertical wall Y 18 is arranged at a suitable distance in front Y of the wall 17 and the upper side 19 of the blast fan casing extends doiifnwztidly and rearwardly to the upper side of said wall 18. A drawer 20 to catch dirt and refuse grain4 is larranged in the space between the walls 17-18 'and may be removed'from the casing through an opening 21 in one wall of thev casing. It will be observed that the dividing board 14 is arranged above the rear side ofsaid drawer' and that a feed passage 22 is. formed between the dividing board and the apron 10 and that the feed passage is provided with a contracted dischargethroat23 by the defiector 15.
K `A feedzhopper.Y 24 is arranged on the front upper side ofthe frame. 1 and is secured by. studs 25 which bear under a cross bar 26, onsaidframe. This feed hopper is provided with an inclined. fixed rear wall 27 and also has a movable oppositely inclined wall 28 which operates against the oppositelyinclined side walls 29 and is adapted to close againstthe lower side of the wall 27 or to be adjusted therefrom to any desiredV frame are provided and this shaft has pinions 32 which engage racks 33 on the lower side of the wall 28 and adapts said wall to be adjusted as may be desired. n
A screen 34 is arranged in a screen frame 35 which is mounted in downwardly and rearwardly inclined guides 36 at the opposing sides of the side walls of the main casing, the screen being arranged at a suitable distance above the apron 12 and the dividing board 14.y The frame 35 extends rearwardly of the screen and has` a cross bar 37 at its rear end. v This cross bar is provided with a forwardly extending and downwardly curved deflector apron 38 lwhich is arranged above the apron or wall 10 and at the upper end. of the feed passage 22, and serves to discharge the grain that tails over the screen into said feed passage, such refuse grain and dirt as passes through the screen falling upon a rearwardly and downwardly inclined chute 39 and being discharged by gravity from said vchute into the draw or receptacle 20. A reciprocating sand screen 40 is arranged under the chute, extends rearwardly therefrom, and is connected to the frame 35 of the screen 34 by rods 41, said rods having downwardly bent ends which are fitted in eyes or openings in the sand screen and in the screen frame 35. The cross bar 37 of the screen frame 35 is connected by rods 42 to wheels 43--4'4 on opposite ends of a shaft 45 which is mounted in bearings in the sides of the frame. The wheel 44 has spur gears and is engaged by a driving gear wheel 46 which is mounted on a stub shaft on the frame and is here shown as provided with a crank handle 47 whereby it may be rotated. A pulley may be substituted for the crank handle when it is desired to operate the machine by power, as will be understood. The rods are connected to the wheels 43-44 eccentrically of the latter so that when said wheels rotate together with the shaft 45 reciprocating motion is imparted to the screen by the rods, as will be understood. The rods pass through guides 48 at the rear side of the frame.
The revoluble blast fan 49 has its shaft 50 arranged centrally in the drum or casing 5- and mounted in bearings in the sides of the frame. This fan or blower is here shown as comprising 4 blades 51 and its shaft has a gear 52 at one end which engages the gear 46 and hence when the latter is turned not only are the screens reciprocated but the blower is revolved and hence directs a blast (iopies of air lrearwardly under the feedip'assage 22 and up through the flue 13 between the wall 3 and the fixed apron 10. A blast is also directed through a throat 53 into the upper drum 6 and is directed rearwardly lfrom said upper drum under the hopper and above the screen 34. This blast may be controlled and directed by a cross sectionally diamond shaped valve 54 which has pivots 55 and is arranged in said upper drum. A valve 56 is alsov arranged in the discharge throat 57 of the blast fan casing and is pivotally mounted as at 58.
In the operation of my improved fan the grain which tails over from the screen 34 is directed by the apron 38 into the passage 22 and drops through the latter and is caught by the rearwardly directed blast from the blast fan. The chaffand other like particles are caught by the blast and discharged from the flue 13 and under the fixed apron wall 12. The grain, being` heavier than the chad passes down through the blast into the flue 8 and is discharged therefrom by gravity at the point 9.
A box 59 is arranged under the inclined bottom 4 of the casing and serves as a compartment for storing the. screen. This box or compartment is provided at its rear upper end with a hinged door 60.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A grain fan comprising a casing, a screen movably mounted therein, means for reciprocating the screen, a drawerlocatedin the casing below said screen, a fan journaled 4in the casing, a chute located in the casing lower edge of thechute and extending 'over the drawer, means operatively connecting said screens together whereby they reciprocate simultaneously, and a drum arranged to discharge a blast of air from the fan under the first mentioned screen and over the said chute and along that end portion of the second mentionedscreen which extends over the drawer.
