Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,957, dated October 17, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I. FLE'rcH WOODWARD, of McMinnville, in the county of WVarren and State of Tennessee, have invented certain Improvements in Photographic Tents, of which the following is a specification The first part of my invention relates to the adjustable elevating half of a wall or wedgetent in such a manner that it forms a convenient photographic operating room, gallery, or studio. The object of this part of my invention is to give a larger and better-lighted operating room. The second part of my invention relates to the adjustable side curtains that are the mere continuation of a central partition, which gives the operator complete control of the ever-ch an gin g wind and light.
Figure 1 shows the tent as I found it and as it is when shut down for a lodge. Fig. 2 shows the side and front View of the adjustable elevated half A and B, the partition 0, and the side curtains E as I have arranged them, forming an op eratin g room of the elevated extended half and a dark or private room of the remaining half.
I construct a common wedge or wall-tent, leaving its end A A open in the center to the top of B B, placing directly through it a partition, O G, of like material, fastenin g it permanently to the top along near where the ridge-pole rests. The half ends of A A that are intended to be elevated are prepared with sockets along their bordered bottom, in which the poles D D are inserted, which are of sufficient height so that on elevating the half A B-as is seen in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawingit is formed into an extended awning, making its ends form in such a manner as to leave the sides that are supplied with the curtains E E in a perfect square, and give a high fall and perfect light in and about the central partition 0 0, upon which is placed the background F, and near which should be placed the model for photographing. E I usually make of ordinary muslin or blue calico, and make them perform a two-fold purpose. They can be fastened permanently to the outer ends of the partition 0 G, which enables them to be folded back against it, thus protecting the background F when the tent is used as a lodge; or they may be a mere continuation of the partition O C. There being tapes at the upper ends of these curtains they are easily fastened back to the upper ends of the partition 0 G by tap es which are there attached for that purpose; there being tapes also to the raised ends A A near where the poles D D are inserted enable them to be easily brought round and secured to the ends when needed to regulate the light or wind hence, if the tent is set up with its open adjustable side facing north, the morning and evening sunlight is to be shut off and regulated by the side cur tains E E, while the noonday sun, as well as the glare of the open sky, is cut off by the adjustable elevating top A B, thus forming a large and well lighted operating room at all hours of the day; and when the day has passed or a rain sets in the side curtains E E can be replaced against the partition O 0, covering the background F; then the elevated half A B can be replaced to its original place and shape, as seen in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawing.
I claim as my invention The adjustable elevating half A B along with the partition 0 and the side curtains E E, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth in my specification.
