IMPROVEMENT IN FILES.

Specication forming partof Letters Patent No. 119,947, dated October 1'7, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IsAAc N. PATTEN, of Memphis, in the State of Tennessee, have invented certain Improvements in Files, of which the following is a vspecilication:

My invention relates to an improvement in that class oi' files which is especially adapted to sharpening saws. It consists of the file A, with teeth running to the right hand on its one side and to the left on its opposite side, and the handles B, when constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.

A is a metallic tile, whose teeth on the one or upper face, as shown at a, incline at an angle contrariwise to those on the lower or opposite side thereof, as shown by the dotted lines at b, which latter represent the angle or inclination of the teeth on the lower side thereof. B B are two handles, one upon either end of the le, which furnish a convenient hold for both hands, wherebyT the le can be moved along upon the teeth of the saw its full length, thereby causing a uniformity of wear upon the full length ofthe le between the handles and a consequent economy of the wear of the device. Said handles, in conjunction with the teeth or cut of the le, which latter runs or inclines to the right hand on one side or face and to the left on the opposite side, are designed to admit of the filing of a right and left-hand tooth of a saw without re` versing the ends of the ile, as customary, but by simply turning the file over, which is readily appreciated in practice. Hence it isl constructed of uniform dimensions its entire length, and is provided with a tang upon either end thereof for securing thereon the handles.

In saw-files and others which are employed for a similar purpose but one handle is provided, and hence the file is only partially worn out by use, when it has to be thrown aside and a new one substituted; whereas the construction of my file is such that it can be thoroughly worn out before a necessity exists for its being superseded by another file.

I claim- As an improved article of manufacture, a iiat ile, whose teeth have the strike and dip, as described and shown, and whose ends terminate in tangs and handles, as set forth.
