AUTOMATIC EMBROIDERING-MACHINE.

Toall whom it may concern Be it known that I, RUDoLF Gnlicnn, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Chemnitz, in the Kingdom of Saxony, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Embroidering- Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Wlll. enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanylng drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in automatic embroidering machines, and more particularly in hand operated mechanism 'for setting the frame which carries the rolls on which the fabric to be embroidered is trained.
At the beginning of the emb-roidering operation and in some cases in the course of the operation it is necessary to set the ma.- chine in position for embroidering a certain part" of the fabric. In such cases the automatic controlling apparatus must be thrown out of operation, and the machine must be set by hand. Apparatus of this class such as. are now in use are objectionable, because the machine is liable to be injured in case the operator forgets prior to starting the automatic embroidering operation to throw the hand operated setting means out of operative position, because in this case coupling takes place at the same time for operation in opposite directions.
The object of the improvements is to provide mechanism of this class in which this objection is removed.
With this object in view my invention consists in constructing the mechanism in such a way that the operating mechanism for the' frame can be connected with the hand operated mechanism only for operation in one direction. Thereby, even if the hand operated mechanism has not been set in inoperative position, the machine can not be injured.
For the purpose of explaining the invention an example embodying the same has been shown in the accompanying drawing, in which the same letters of reference have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts.
In said drawing Figure 1, is a side view of the improved mechanism, Fig. 2, is an end view of Fig. 1 seen from the right, and Fig. 3, is a detail view showing the clutch mechanism.
In the drawing I have shown only those parts of the machine in which the improved setting mechanism is provided, the general construction of the machine being familiar to those skilled in the art. As shown to the frame 1 011 which the fabric rolls are mounted a bracket 2 is secured which provides a vertical guide way 2 for a block 4 secured to a horizontal operating rod 3 formed at its end with teeth 3, At the top end of the frame 1 a bracket 5 is provided which carries a guide block 6. The latterengages in a horizontal guide slot 6 formed in the top part of a vertical operating rod 7. Also the rod 7 is formed with teeth 7.
Laterally of the frame 1 the automatic controlling mechanism is located from which operating spindles 8 and 9 for the embroidering frame project upward. The spindle 8 is formed with teeth 8 which are in mesh with the teeth 3 of the rod 3. The spindle 9 has secured to its end a bevel gearing 10 which is in mesh with. a bevel gearing 11 secured to a horizontal shaft 12. At its opposite end the said shaft is formed with teeth 12 which are in mesh with the teeth 7 of the rod 7 On the controlling apparatus slides 23 and 24 provided with internal gearings are mounted which are adapted to be brought intoposition for engagement with gear wheels 21 and 22 respectively secured to the spindles 8 and 9. Thereby the embroidering frame is adapted to be set vertically and horizontally in any positlon, as is known in the art. Furthermore, a shaft 13 is mounted on the automatic controlling apparatus which is equipped with a hand wheel 14. The bearing of the shaft 13 which is next to the hand wheel is provided with a disk 15 provided'with scale marks 15. To the shaft 13 a hand 16 is secured which is in indicating position relatively to the scale marks. The shaft 13 is adapted to be shifted in longitudinal direction. To the shaft a clutch ring 17 is rigidly secured, and worm gearings 25 and 26 provided with coupling jaws 25 and 26 are loosely mounted on the said shaft so as to be rotatable thereon. Ihe worm. gearing 25 is in mesh with a worm gearing 19 se cured to the spindle 8, and the worm gear ing 26 is in engagement with a worm gearing 20 secured to the spindle 9.
lVhen the machine is in embroidering position the spindles 8 and 9 are coupled with the operating cylinders provided in the automatic controlling apparatus. Now the shaft is preferably in such a position that the coupling ring 17 is out of engagement with the worm gearings 25 and 26. If it is desired to set the frame 1 by hand the spindles'S and 9 are disconnected from their driving mechanisms 23 and 24 in any preferred way. If now the shaft 13 is shifted in one or the other direction, the frame 1 can be set by means of the hand wheel le in horizontal or vertical direction through the intermediary of the mechanism 17 25, 19, 8, 3, or 17, 26, 20, 9, 10, 11, 12, 7. Under any circumstances the shaft 13 can be coupled withthe driving mechanism only for movement in one or the other direction. If the automatic controlling apparatus is again thrown into operation, and the operator has omitted to set one or the other of the clutches 17, 25, or 17, 26 in non-coupling position, no harm can be done to the machine, because in this case the shaft 13 and the hand wheel 14 run idle and take part in the rotation.
The shaft 13 may be adapted to automatically return into a neutral position each time the hand wheel 14 is being released.
As the coupling members 21, 22, 23, and 24: are disposed within a space which is covered at its top, it may happen that coupling is made impossible by the gear wheels 21 and 22 and the racks 23 not being in positions for engagement with each other after setting the spindles 8 and 9 by hand, and the teeth of one of them not entering into position between the teeth of the other one. To avoid this, the disk 15, the scale marks 15' and the hand 16 cooperating therewith are provided. The graduation of the scale marks corresponds to the pitch of the teeth 21 and 22. The hand 16 is secured to the shaft 13 in such a way, that with the hand in register with one of the scale marks the gear wheels are in such positions that the racks-23 and 24 get in mesh with the gear wheels when the automatic controlling apparatus is again thrown into operation and the racks are shifted laterally.-
The mechanism for transmittingthe setting operation. from the automatic controlling apparatus to the frame 1 can be constructed in any known or preferred way. In any case, an important feature resides in the fact, that the hand operated means can be set only for movement one direction so that no harm is done to the mechanism in case the operator forgets to throw the mechanism out of operation, and that the automatic controlling apparatus can be thrown into operation in a reliable way.
I claim. herein as my invention:
1. In an automatic embroidering machine, the combination with the embroidering frame, means for operating same, comprising a rotatable shaft adapted to move said frame in one line of movement, and a second rotatable shaft adapted to move said frame in a line of movement which is substantially perpendicular to said first named line of movement, of amanually rotatable. member adapted to be alternately connected to said shafts, whereby the embroidering frame may be manually set through alternate movements. 7 1 V 2. In an automatic embroidering machine,
the combination with the embroidering frame, means for operating same, comprising a rotatable shaft adapted to move said frame in one line of movement, and a' second rotatable shaft adapted to move said frame in a line of movement which is sub stantially perpendicular to said first named line of movement, of an operating member adapted to be shifted alternately into oper ative connection with said shafts, and in conjunction with said operating member, hand actuated. means for causing said op erating member to alternately actuate said shafts, whereby the embroidering frame' may be manually set alternately in one and the other of its two lines of movements.
3. In an automatic embroidering machine, the combination with the embroidering frame, means for operating same, comprising a rotatable shaft adapted to move said frame in one line of movement, and a second rotatable shaft adapted to move said frame in a line of movement which is substantially perpendicular to said first named line of movement, of a manually rotatable member adapted to be operatively connected to either of said shafts, whereby the embroidering frame may be manually set alternately in one and the other of its two lines of movements, and an indicator in conjunction with said member and, adapted to indicate suitable stopping positions for either of said shafts.
4. In an automatic embroidering machine, the combination with the embroidering frame, means for operating same, comprising a rotatable shaft adapted to move said frame in one line of movement, and a second rotatable shaft adapted to move said frame in a line of movement which is substantially perpendicular to said first named line of movement, of an operating member adapted to be shifted into operative connection with either of said shafts, hand actuated means in conjunction with said operating member and V adapted to cause said operating members to operatively connect with and rotate either of said shafts, whereby the embroidering frame may be manually set alternately in one and the other of its two lines of movements, and in conjunction with said hand actuated means, an indicator adapted to indicate suitable stopping positions for either of said shafts.
5. In an automatic embroidering machine, the combination with the embroidering frame, means for operating same, comprising a rotatable shaft adapted to move said frame in one line of movement, and a second rotatable shaft adapted to move said frame in a line of movement substantially perpendicular to said first named line of movement of a rotatable longitudinally movable shaft, means for manually moving and rotating the latter, a member fixed on the manually movable shaft and adapted to be alternately connected with the frame operating shafts when being shifted into such operative connection by a longitudinal sliding movement of its supporting shaft, whereby the embroidering frame may be manually moved into any desired position by alternately moving same within its two lines of movements.
6. In an automatic embroidering machine, the combination with the embroidering frame, means for operating the same, comprising a rotatable shaft adapted to move said frame in one line of movement, and a second rotatable shaft adapted to move said frame in a line of movement substantially perpendicular to said first named line of movement, of a rotatable longitudinally movable shaft, means for manually moving and rotating the latter shaft, a member fixed on the manually movable shaft and adapted to operatively connect with either of the frame operating shafts when being shifted into such operative connection by a longitudinally sliding movement of the shaft carrying said member, whereby the embroidering frame may be set into any desired position by alternately moving same through its two lines of movements, and in conjunction with said means for manually rotating said shaft carrying said member, a dial, and an indicating hand, said dial marking suitable stopping positions for either of the frame operating shafts when said frame has been manually moved into the desired position.
7. In an automatic embroidering machine, the combination of an embroidering frame, a rotatable shaft, mechanism between said shaft and frame to permit said shaft to move said frame in one line of movement, a gearing in connection with said shaft, a second rotatable shaft, mechanism between the second shaft and said frame to permit said second shaft to move said frame in a line of movement substantially perpendicular to said first named line of movement, a gearing in connection with said second shaft, a shaft in proximity to the gearings on the two frame operating shafts and adapted to be shifted between two extreme positions determined by the two gearings, a clutch member on the last named shaft and adapted to couple said last named shaft with either of said gearings when said shaft is shifted for that purpose, whereby either of said frame operating shafts can be caused to rotate, a hand wheel on said last named shaft, a dial, and an indicating hand, one of these latter parts being stationary while the other is revoluble with said hand wheel, said dial being provided with marks corresponding to desirable stopping positions for both of said frame operating shafts to be observed after the frame has been set by means of said hand wheel and the operating parts connected therewith.
