BOILER-CLEANER PRECIPITATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent Patented Sept. 26, 1916.
Application filed June 29, 1914. Serial No. 847,984.
To all whom it may concern lie it known that I, EMnY A. NnwooMB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State 'of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Boiler- (lleaner Precipitatm's, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements 1n boiler cleaner precipitators.
The object of-my invention is to prov de novel means for removing and precipitating impurities contained in the water of a steam boiler.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel precipitating device,. which will effect the quick and elficient precipitation of impurities carried by water passing through a settlingchamber.
()ther novel features of my inventlon are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a view, partly in side elevation, partly broken away, and partly in vertical section of my improved precipitating apparatus connected to a horizontal steam boiler, apart of which is shown. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
1 designates a vertical settling chamber, preferably cylindrical, and provided at its upper and lower ends respectively with heads 2 and 3.
The head 2 is provided witha central vertical screw-threaded opening 4, in which is tightly fitted a vertical screw-threaded pipe 5, the lower end of which is fitted in a screw-threaded vertical hole provided in the closed upper end of a vertical tubular member 6, preferably provided with downwardly and outwardly flaring conical sides.
The tubular member 6 is provided inside with a baflling member, which extends transversely across-the lower end of the flaring portion of the member 6, and consists preferably in a hollow conical member 7, the apex of which is at the top, and the base of which is connected with the lower end of the member 6 by horizontal portions 8, Fig. 2, narrow arcuate spaces 9 being provided between the lower ends of the members 6 and 7, said spaces communicating with the interior of the settling chamber 1, and serving as openings for conveying water and impurities carried thereby from the tubular member (3 into the settling chamber.
A conductor 10 is connected at one end to the upper end of thepipe 5, and extends through the top wall of the boiler 11, and inside of said boiler, as a horizontal portion 12 normally submerged by the water 1.3 in the boiler, and which is provided with a plurality of perforations 14 through which water passes into the horizontal portion 12. The free end of the portion 12 turns upwardly, and is adapted to extend into the steam space above the water. Said free end is normally closed by a removable cap 15. The conductor 10, outside the boiler, is provided with a shut-off valve 16.
The head 2 is provided with a lateral screw-threaded outlet opening 17, in which is fitted one end of a conductor 18, the other end of which extends through the lower side of the boiler 11. Said conductor 18 intermediate of the boiler 11 and the shut-off valve 19, is provided with a blow-elf valve 20, of any ordinary character. The conductor 18 intermediate of the head 2 and the shut-off valve 19, and preferably above the upper side of the boiler 11, is provided with an air outlet 21, normally closed by a shutoff valve 22.
The lower head 3 is provided with a central discharge opening in which is fitted av discharge pipe 23 provided with a shut off valve 24, and through which, when desired, the contents of the chamber 1 may be discharged.
In the operation of my invention, the valves 24, 19 and 22 are normally closed. In starting the apparatus into operation, the valve 22 is opened, thus permitting the discharge of the air from the conductors 18 and 10 and from the settling chamber 1.
When water begins to discharge through the opening 21, the valve 22 is closed, after which the operation will be automatic. The water in the boiler 11 will pass by the conductor 10 into and through the aim 5 and into the tubular member 6, which with the pipe 5 and baffling member 7 is a device for precipitating the dirt carried by the water. As the water passes through the member 6, it will be deflected outwardly by the bafliing member 7 to the openings 9, through which the water will pass into the settling chamber 1, the member 7 restraining the flow of water,
.which by being thus restrained and by passing into the co der portion of the chamber 1, will eii'ect a precipitation of. the impurities below the member 6. By having the baffling member downwardly and outwardly flaring, the dirt will not accumulate on its upper side. By having the member 7 hollow on its under side, an eddy is created below it, which assists in precipitating the dirt. The water after passing from the member 6, passes upwardly between said member and the inner wall of the chamber 1, the latter being closely adjacent to said member, so that the water is again obstructed at this point, thereby further aiding in the precipitation of the dirt. The Water, then clear, will now pass upwardly into the .conductor 18 by which it is carried back to the boiler 11.
For the purpose of repairing the precipitator, the valves 16 and 19 are-closed. At other times they remain open.

In a precipitator of a boiler cleaner, a settling chamber having an outlet and an inlet for water, a tubular member extending vertically downwardly into said chamber through said inlet and having at its lower end below said outlet a downwardly flaring portion of less diameter than the inner diameter of said chamber, the downwardly flaring portion having therein a hollow conical bafliing member which flares downwardly, a water passage being provided between the lower end of the baflling member and the inner wall of the flaring portion, the lower end of the conical bafiling member being open.
