ALEXANDER S. HARVEY AND JOSEPH.'W. BRILL, 033 LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
TAILPIECE FOR BAT -I-COCK FIXTURES.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ALnxANnnR S. HAR- vny and JOSEPH vV. BRILL, citizens of the United States, and residing in Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tailpieces for Bath-Cock Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tail pieces for bath cocks and the principal object is to pro- .vide a tail piece that will be universal in its application to interiorly flanged or threaded bath cocks.
t is also an object to provide a tail piece composed of a small number of parts and of the simplest nature.
It is a further object to provide a tail piece that is easily applied and eificient in its operation.
In the drawings accompanying this specification Figure 1 is an elevation of a bath cock showing the application of the tail piece thereto. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the tail piece showing the pawls and washer in the unengaged position, part of the band and tubular member being broken away. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of its tail piece on the axial line. Fig. 4: is a plan of the upper end of the tail piece a portion of the upper end of the tubular member being broken away to show the width of the slots therein. Fig. 5 is a plan on enlarged scale of the pawl.
This invention overcomes the difficulty frequently found in trying to apply a bath tub attachment provided with a rubber tube or bulb where the cocks or faucets are threaded or the tip is too large to receive the rubber connection.
More specifically in the drawings, numeral 6 designates a bath cock having an interiorly threaded outlet, into which is adapted to extend the upper end of the tubular member 7, the upper end of which is slotted, preferably in three positions to form three elongated slots of less width than length, so that the headed ends 8 of the pawls or dogs 9 may be inserted in and through, lengthwise of the slot, and then twisted or turned with the head within the tubular member and slipped up so that the ring or sleeve 10 may be turned under the same to lock it in operable position. This ring 10 is provided with a slot 11 that is of such depth Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 19, 1916.
Application filed September 1, 1915.
Serial No. 48,431.
as to register with the slots in the tubular member 7 and allow the pawls to be assembled successively and be turned so that the slots will not register, this ring being supported upon a shoulder 12 on the tubular member. This encircling ring 10 and a portion ofthe tubular member are encircled by an elastic band of rubber or other resilient material 14, which grips the parts so that the pawls 9 are supported in the position shown in Fig. 2 or with their outer ends extended .to a greater radius than the radius of the interior threads they are adapted to engage. Below the shoulder and the elastic band 14: the tubular member is threaded exteriorly to receive the threaded wall of the washer 15 formed of sheet metal with the exterior knurled wall 16 thus providing an annular channel for the elastic gasket 17, adapted to engage the lower end of the bath cock outlet and form a tight joint therewith. The lower portion, about half, of the tubular member is provided with a series of diminishing shoulders 18 to receive and hold the end of the tube or different sizes of bulbs.
The operation will be readily understood. The parts being in the position shown in Fig. 2 the lower portion is grasped in the hand and the upper portion pushed in to the outlet of the bath cook, the pawls being forced down against the resiliency of the band 1% to allow the outer ends to pass the threads to the point or depth desired, when they will be forced into engagement therewith. Now the washer 15 is screwed up until its gasket makes a tight joint, the pawls resisting this downward pull and locking the fixture in place. To release, the washer is unscrewed to relieve the pull on the pawls and the tail piece may then be unscrewed from the outlet, the pawls following the threads out.
What we claim is 1. A tail piece composed of a tubular member having a plurality of pawls thereon, and an elastic embracing member adapted to force the pawls into engagement with the interior threads of a bath cock outlet.
2. A tail piece comprising a tube, a plurality of pawls pivotally mounted thereon, resilient means encircling said tube to force said pawls outwardly and a washer adapted to engage said tube.
3. A tail piece comprising a tube provided with a plurality of slots adjacent one of its ends the opposite end being provided with shoulders to receive a tube together with a threaded intermediate portion, pawls movably secured inthe said slots, a resilient band between said pawls and said threaded portion and a threaded Washer adapted to engage said threaded portion of said tube.
l. A. tail piece comprising a tube provided with a plurality of slots, a notched ring adapted tocover a portion of said slots, a plurality of pawls adapted to hinge in said slots, a resilient band adapted to engage said pawls, and means below said band to engage the outlet to which said tail piece is adapted.
5. A tail piece comprising a tube provided with a plurality of slots and thread ed and shouldered portions, a plurality of headed pawls adapted to hinge in said slots, resilient means encircling said tube and engaging said pawls, and a gasketed washer mounted on said threaded portion.
