Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.l
GOTTLEIB BACKSTEIN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ARRANGEMENT 0F DEVICES FOR APPLYING POWER TO FIRE-ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 11,987, dated November 28, 1854.
To all whom, t may concern Be it known that I, GOTTLEIB BACKSTEIN, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manner of Arranging and Operating the Pumps of Fire-Engines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-n Figure 1, denotes a side elevation. Fig. 2,
- denotes a side elevation of the apparatus for working the pump. Fig. 3, denotes a vertical section taken through the center', longitudinally, of the engine. Fig. 4, denotes a top plan of the engine and Fig. 5, denotes a top plan of the pumping apparatus.
Similar letters in the several gures denote like parts.
The nature of my invention relates to the arrangement of parts by which a reciprocating motion is given to a piston in a horizontal cylinder, and the water forced up vertically in a continuous stream, to the exit pipe or hose.
To enable 'others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe the arrangement of the several active parts-the machine itself being constructed in any of the usual well known forms.
My fire engine has but. a single cylinder B, placed horizontally in the water reservoir, through which cylinder works a piston rod G, with a piston head I, on its center, all of which is packed in the usual well known manner. There are but five valves in the entire engine, four of them marked C, in the cylinder B, so as to make it double acting, and one, also marked C, in the end of the exit. pipe which is within the air chalnber H. Branch pipes J, of any suitable number, may lead from the air chamber, and be pro* vided with hose couplings, or nozzles, so that several streams of water may be thrown at the same time.
D, is a trigger for fastening or locking the engine when it is to be used; andE, are doors opening into the water reservoir so that the cylinder heads may be removed, or repairs of any kind made.
In Fig. 5, K, K, are two cross heads to which the piston G is attached at each of its ends. The series of pulling bears A, or ropes are to be att-ached to those cross heads or the frome of which they are a part, and two chains L, L, one end of which is fastened to the pieces A Fig. 2, and the other ends to a drum N, so that by drawing on the bars A, the wheel or drum N, receives a reciprocat ing rotary or rocking motion, which is transmitted to the pist-on rod through the cross l heads.
Having thus fully described the nature of my invention, what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent is- The peculiar arrangement of the pulling levers A, chains L, L, cross heads, piston and cylinder, when used as herein described and applied to the working of a tire engine as set forth.
GOTTLEIB BACKSTEIN.
