Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. STUR'rn- VANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wellesley, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Vertical Crushing-Mills, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to vertical crushing mills of that class shown in the Sturtevant Patents NOS. 761,334.; 857,121 and 1,105,712, and the invention has for its object to improve this class of mills in such a manner as to render them more convenient in mounting or dismounting the parts, as well as to improve their eflciency; all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a vertical section of theimproved vertical crushing mill. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the base portion of the casing thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 12 denotes the base or lower part of the casing which is provided with a horizontal flange 13 which, in practice, will be bolted to suitable supports, as timbers 14, which may be more or less elevated for convenience of access to the mill from the bottom thereof. Secured to the flange 13 is a spider 15 which is provided with ears 16 arranged below the said flange and through which ears and said ange pass attaching bolts 17. Interposed between these ears and flange are spacing washers 17a, the purpose of which will be hereinafter indicated.
The vertical mill shaft 18 is stepped in a sleeve bearing 19 fitting in a central opening in the spider 15 and resting on an adjusting lever 20, similar to the adjusting levers in the forms of mill shown in the Sturtevant patents above referred to. On the shaft 18 and supported by the spider 15 is a bevel gear 21 with which meshes a smaller bevel gear 22 carried by the driving shaft 23. The upper end of the hub of the bevel gear 21 is received in a central recess in a sleeve 24 mounted on the shaft 18 to rotate therewith, the overlapping parts of the said hub and sleeve forming a dust-lock for preventing grit or dust from coming in contact with said shaft 18 at this point. The hub of the spider 15 is provided with an upwardly projecting flange 15* which is received in a recess 21a 1n the bottom of the hub of the bevel gear 21. This construction affords an oil well which is protected from dust by the overlappingV parts of the said flange and bevel gear.
The upper part of the shaft 18 is formed rectangular, and preferably square, so that all of the parts,l as they crushing cones and nuts 25, 26, 27 and 28 will rotate with said shaft without being otherwise keyed thereto,v
but, being loosely strung on said shaft, may be readily placed thereon or removed therefrom, and this is also true with reference to the hub of the scraper or sweeper 29, which discharges the crushed material from the lower part of the chamber of the mill through the three outlet spouts 30a with which the lower part of the casing of the mill is preferably provided. The hub of the scraper or sweeper 29 rests on the top of the sleeve 24, and the lower part o-f the mill casing is provided with an upwardly projecting flange 12a projecting into an annular recess 29a in the hubof the said scraper or sweeper, this construction affording a dust-lock at this point.
The upper part of the mill casing consists of two hinged halves or door-like parts 30 which are pivotally mounted on posts 31 as in the form of mill shown in the Sturtevant Patent No. 1,105,712, so that when these two hinged halves of the upper part of the mill casing are unbolted and the strap or yoke 32, engaging lugs on said halves is removed, these hinged parts of the casing maybe swung aside horizontally like doors for convenient access to the upper part of the mill chamber. The stationary crushing lining elements or cones 33 are attached to the insides of the hinged casing parts 30. The Shaft 18 has its upper bearing in a sleeve or bearing block 34 which is received between the top portions of the casing parts 3Q, said sleeve or bearing block being preferably provided near its top with a pocket 35 for the reception of oil, said pocket being closed by a screw-plug 36.
In this improved form of mill, in which the spider 15 is secured beneath the flange 13 of the base portion of the mill casing, the bearing sleeve 19, the gears 21 and 22 and the sleeve 24 may be dismounted from the shaft and taken out from beneath, when the bolts 17, the spider l5 and the lever 20,
supporting the said bearing sleeve, have been removed. Of course, in assembling the mill, all of these parts may be introduced from beneath. This is a great convenience, as will be understood, as it avoids the inconvenience incidental to inserting or removing these parts from above, as heretofore. Also, by virtue of this construction, the vertical position of the spider 15 and consequently the mesh of the gears 21 and 22 may be varied by .using `spacing washers `17a of dierent thicknesses on the bolts 1T, or a greater' or lesser number of said washers, these washers, as hereinbefore stated, being interposed between the ears 16 on the spider 15 and the flange 13 on `the base portion of the mill casing. Also the mesh of the gears 21 and 22 may be varied, to compensate for wear or for securing a proper relative adjustment of these gears by interposing different thicknesses of bearing washers 37 in the oil well between the hub of the spider 15 and the hub of the` bevel gear 21.
'From the foregoing it will vbe understood that the improved construction described affords means whereby all of the parts of the mill may be conveniently assembled or dismounted, all of the parts in the lower portion of the mill casing being insertible and removable from below, whileall of the crushing parts on the shaft 18 in the upper portion of the casing may -be readily flifted out or removed vertically when the hinged casing door-like parts 30 are swung aside, or may be removedfhorizontally, if desired,
' if the shaft be lifted out; and may also be conveniently assembled in a reverse manner. Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a vertical crushing mill, the combination with a base portion of the mill casing, of a spider secured to the lower side of beneath said flange.
3. In a vertical crushing mill, the combination with a base portion provided with a horizontal flange, of a spider having ears disposed beneath said fiange, and bolts passing through said ears ,and flange whereby said spider is removably secured in place beneath said flange, and spacing washers between said ears and flange, whereby by using more or less or thicker or thinner washers, the verticalposition of said spider may be varied.
4. In a vertical crushing mill, the combination with the vbase portion of the casing thereof, of a spider removably mounted -beneath said base portion and having a central hub or sleeve, a bearing sleeve received in the said hub or sleeve of said spider, a bevel gear above the said spider, a smaller driving bevel gear meshing with the firstnamed bevel gear, a vertical shaft stepped in said bearing sleeve, and a sleeve on said shaft above said first-named bevel gear, all of said parts. excepting said shaft, being insertible into or removable from saidmill casing from beneath.
