IMPROVEMENT IN DUMPING-CARS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,856, dated October 10,1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SIDNEY D. KING, of Middletown, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Dumping-Cars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawing is a side View of my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view, and Fig. 3 is a partial bottom view of the same.

The nature of my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of a dumpin g-car, which moves past the centre to disch arge its contents, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing.

In the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention, A represents a turn-tableprovided on its upper side with two longitudinal inclined guides or ways, B, and said guides are provided with grooves b upon which the box-platform C moves. The platform C is held in proper position for loading by means of .a spring-hook, d, secured on the under side of the boxD, and which catches on a spring-bar, e, on the under side of the platform. The projection e is securely fastened to the under side of the platform and adjusted in place by means of a spring, f, as shown on the drawing in Fig. 3. The hook el' is released or unlatched from position bythe stop K secured on the upper side of the turn-table. E represents a carrying and dumping-box, constructed with an open top and having' aixed to the outer sides pulleys F. The box is hinged upon the beam H on platform O, the beam and box being so arranged that the box is hinged at or near its center, and that the beam will pass directly over the centre of the turn-table. The box D when in proper position rests upon a support, I, on front of the platform C, and is held down by the spring-hook d projecting from its under side and passing through a hole in the platform, where it is caught and held by aspringbar, e. One end of this spring-bar has an arm, K", which passes downward a short distance on the under side of the platform. When the platform O passes down the incline planes B so that the box will pass beyond the center, the end of the bar e strikes the stop K', which releases the latch or hook d, and the box becomes inclined. M represents adjustable hooks secured to the upper surface of the transverse-bar o on the turntable. One end of the chain N is affixed to this adjustable hook, as shown in Fig. l. The chain N is affixed to the dumping-box gate It at n, and, passing over the pulleys F to the adjustable hook M, serves to aid in adjusting the gate while the dumping process is carried on. The gate R is hinged to the rear end of the box E, and is provided with side-boards or guides S, as represented on the drawing. The letter u designates pins or stops affixed to the sides of the box, as

shown, and intended for stopping the gate inthe dumping process.

W represents a hand-screw adapted to operate in the female screw X. The parts are respectively attached to the upper surface of the turn-table and to the inner side of the sliding platform, and operated by means of the hand-wheel Z. By this means the sliding platform and box are grad ually moved outward until the spring-hook d engages with the stop K', which releases the hook and the load of the box is carefully discharged.

I claim as my invention- 1. rlhe combination, with a sliding dumpingcar provided with the pulleys F and the adjustable plates m, of the automatic gate R, and the connecting' chains N, substantially 'as specified.

2. The combination, with the sliding platform C, of the hinged car body D, and the motivescrew W working in the female screw X, substantially as specied.
