FLUSHING DEVICE.
Application filed June 24, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNST HOLMBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Flushing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in flushing tanks, one object of the invention being to provide a flushing tank adapted to be automatically supplied with water from a city main, and to be discharged by the pressure of compressed air equal to that of the source of supply.
A further object is to provide a flushing tank which can be filled without noise from the source of supply.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a broken side view of my improved flushing tank; Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section of the discharge valve thereof; Fig. 3 is a vertical section of said valve taken at right angles to Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a vertical section of an air supply pipe and dash pot; Fig. 5 is a vertical section of said dash pot at right angles to Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is an enlarged vertical section showing a venting screw in said dash pot; Fig. 7 is a broken sectional view of a valve.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a suitable support upon which is secured, as shown at 2, a flushing tank 3. Water is supplied to said tank by a pipe 4: screwed into the lower end of a deflector carrier 6 having at the top a concave deflector 7, and discharging by openings 8 beneath said deflector.
9 indicates the discharge pipe from the flushing tank, screwed into the bottom of said tank so that its upper end is at a level higher than the lower edge of the deflector 7, and thus the supply water will always enter said flushing tank below the level of the water therein, and therefore without noise.
11 indicates a valve casing connected to said pipe 9 by a union 12. The valve casing is connected to a pipe 13 leading to the bowl to be flushed. In said valve casing is a valve 14, which is adapted to be seated on a seat 16 formed in the casing and is connected to a stem 17, which is connected to a transversely slotted block 18 connected to a stem 19 which slides in a bridge 21 formed in the valve casing. ing in the valve casing, the other side of said crank being connected to a shaft 23 which has a bearing in a thimble 24 of a stuffing box 26, compression of the packing (not shown) being obtained by the internally threaded cap 25. Said shaft is connected to a lever 27 having at one end a handle 28 and at the other end a weight 29. Said lever is pivotally connected to one end of a link 31, the other end of which is pivotally connected to a plunger 33, to which is secured a cup leather 34, said plunger and cup leather reciprocating in a cylindrical dash pot 36 screwed into the bottom of the tank and extending upwardly in said tank. In the closed end of said dash pot'is screwed one end of a pipe 37 leading to a point near the top of the tank, and the other end of which is fitted with a rubber valve 38 having. an elongated opening 39 therethrough communicating with the opening of the pipe, and having thin lips -11 which lips can open to admit air into the tank, when the air is forced upward from the dash pot 36 and the pipe 37, but close again against the entrance of air from the tank into the pipe 37. To regulate the speed at which the air can pass from the dash pot to the pipe 37, there is provided a vent or adjusting screw 42 screwed into the lower end of the pipe 37 and one side 43 of which is cutaway with a sloping cut.
The mode of operation is as follows :To discharge the water from the flushing tank, the handle 28 is pulled down against the weight 29, thereby raising the valve 14 from its seat 16. In so doing the plunger 3 descends, permitting the air in the pipe 37 and in the top of the dash pot 36 to eX- pand, since no air can pass into said pipe from the tank 3 through the valve 39. hen the air in the pipe 37 and dash pot 36 is below atmospheric pressure, air passes upwardly between the dash pot and the plunger, and the upwardly extending edge of the cup leather. Upon releasing the handle, the valve is prevented from closing immediately by the resistance of the air in the dash pot to the upward movement of the plunger therein, so that ample time is afforded for the water in the flushing tank to escape by the pipe 9. As the plunger ascends in the dash pot, being raised by the weight 29, the air is slowly forced out through the pipe 37 and the valve 38 into always an elastic pressure equal to that of the source of supply.
The utility of my invention, aside from the fact that the entrance of water into the tank is noiseless, is that sufficient air is always maintained in the tank to provide an elastic cushion of air. But for the provision by which air is constantly supplied to the tank through the dash pot, the result would be that there would be a constant loss of air with each discharge of water and eventually the tank would be emptied of air.
I c'laim:
1. In combination with a closed flushing tank, supply and discharge pipes connected thereto, a valve for controlling said discharge pipe, "a handle for opening said valve, automatic means for closing the valve, a dash pot resisting the closing of the valve, and means whereby the operation of the dash pot with the closing oi the valve forces air into the closed tank.
2. In combination with a closed flushing tank, supply and discharge pipes connected thereto, a valve for controlling said discharge pipe, handle for opening said valve,
automatic means for closing the valve. a dash pot within the tank resisting the closing of the valve, and means whereby the ,operation of the dash pot with the closing of the valve forces air into the closed tank.
3. In a flushing tank, the combination of a closed tank, supply and discharge pipes therefor, a valve for controlling said discharge pipe, means for opening said valve voluntarily, automatic means for closing the valve, adash pot the mouth of which i is screwed into the wall of the tank, said dash pot extending within the tank, a plunger in said dash pot, an operative connection between said plunger and opening means, whereby as the valve is closed the plunger compresses air in said dash pot, and a pipe leading from said dash pot into the tank, and a non-return valve for said pipe.
4C. In a flushing tank, the combination of a closed tank, supply and discharge pipes therefor, a valve for controlling said discharge pipe, means ior opening' said valve voluntarily, automatic means for closing the valve, a dash pot the mouth of which is screwed into the wall of the tank, said dash pot extending within the tank, a plunger in said dash pot, an operative connection between said plunger and opening means, whereby as the valve is closed the plunger compresses air in said dash pot, and a pipe leading from said dash pot to a point adjacent to the top of the tank, and a nonreturn valve for said pipe.
5. In a flushing tank, the combination of a closed tank, supply and discharge pipes therefor, a valve for controlling said discharge pipe, means for opening said valve voluntarily, automatic means for closing the valve, a dash pot the mouth of which is screwed into the wall of the tank, said dash pot extending within the tank, a
plunger in said dash pot, an operative connection between said plunger and opening means, whereby as the valve is closed the plunger compresses air in said dash pot, and a pipe leading from said dash pot into the tank, a non-return valve for said pipe, and means for regulating the rate of flow 0; the air in said pipe.
6. In a flushing tank, the combination of a closed tank, supply and discharge pipes therefor, a valve for controlling said discharge pipe, means for opening said valve voluntarily, automatic means for closing the valve, a dash pot the mouth of which is screwed into the wall of the tank, said dash pot extending within the tank, a plunger in said dash pot, an operative connection between said plunger and opening means, whereby as the valve is closed the plunger compresses air in said dash pot, and a pipe leading from said dash pot into the tank, and a non-return valve for said pipe comprising rubber lips which are forced outwardly to permit air to escape from the pipe but prevent the entrance of air into the pipe.
