TANK-HEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept, 19, 1916,
Application filed March 22, 1815. Serial No. 16,272.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS C. HADsALL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the county of Jasper, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tank-IIeaters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tank heaters and particularly to devices of this character adapted to heat the water in stock tanks to prevent same from freezing in extremely cold water.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of the character which will be simple in construction, eflicient in use and which can be manufactured at a comparatively small cost.
Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended clain In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a tank heater constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2, a plan view of same; Fig. 3, a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4, a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a perspective view of a fragment of the furnace looking at the inner side thereof.
Referring to the drawings the invention is shown as comprising a tank A, a furnace B and a smoke box C. The tank A includes side members 10 and 11, a bottom 12 and end members 13 and 14. The side and bottom members of the tank are extended beyond the end members to form flanges 15 and 16 respectively. Extending longitudinally with the tank and having their terminals mounted in the end members 13 and 14 are heat flues 17.
The furnace B is in the form of a casing and includes the usual grate 18 and heat escape opening 19 formed in one side thereof above the grate 18. The front and rear walls of the furnace B are provided with corresponding recesses 20 and 21 located just at the bottom of the opening 19. The top wall of the furnace B is provided with a securing flange 22. The front wall of the furnace B has mounted therein a fire-box door 23 and an ash pit door 24. The furnace B is connected to the tank A adjacent the end member 13 by disposing the flange 16 in the recesses 20 and 21 so as to bring the flanges 15 in overlapping relatiomwith the front and rear walls of the furnace and then passing rivets through the flanges 15 and the front and rear walls of the furnace. To complete the application of the furnace to the tank the flange 22 is riveted directly to the end member 13.
' The smoke box C is also in the form of a casing having one side open, the flanges 15 and 16 adjacent the end member 14 overlapping the sides and bottom of the smoke box respectively and being secured to the latter by means of rivets. The top of the smoke box C is provided with an opening 26 surrounded by a flange 27 over which is engaged the lower end of a smoke pipe 28. The closed side of the smoke box C corresponding to the end member 14 is provided with openings 29 in line with the flue 17 whereby the latter may be readily cleaned. The openings 29 are normally closed by pivoted doors 30.
What is claimed is:
In a device of the class described, the combination of a tank having its side and bottom members extending beyond its end members to form securing flanges, heat flues extending longitudinally through the tank and having their terminals supported in the end members of the tank, a furnace member having one side provided with an opening and its front and rear Walls provided with corresponding recesses at the bottom of said opening and receiving the flange at the adjacent end of the bottom member of the tank and whereby the flanges at the ends of the side member overlap the front and rear of the furnace, rivets engaged through the furnace and the last named flanges, a flange on the top of the furnace, rivets engaged through said last named flange and the top of the adjacent end member of the Walls of the smoke box and the overlying flanges 0f the tank.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
LEWIS C. HADSALL.
