As the sheet is started in its passage through the machine, the first set of sheet rolls brings it into engagement with a series oi lingers 1T rotatively mounted upon the shaft 1S of the upper 'feed roller ot the first set. Licence the sheet. rolls which operate to pull the sheet between the straightening rolls are so formed as to grip the entire surface of the sheet and thus prevent the sheets slipping when the straightening rolls ,are held stationary by the pawl 23. This is for the reason that the straightening rolls exert a tension on the sheet which smoothes out any wrinkles or turned over edges or corners. The iirst set ot sheet rolls 31 consists oi' two pairs or' disks having yielding tires With Set screws 32 for adjusting them along their 'moiuitinsf shafts 1 8 in order to accommodate themselves to di lierent widths of sheets. The mechanisnii is so designed that 1t 1s preferably the last edge of each sheet that `is subjected to the ironing or straightening elieet of the rolls QG when they are stopped.
Yoilowing the sheet rolls is ascrubbing mechanism consisting of a. transversely reciprocating brush which moves rapidly across the surface of the sheet-s passing through the machine. This brush is reciprocated by means of a connecting rod 34: hav in g rotative connection with a crank 35 mounted on a shaft 36 journaledin bearings 3? secured to the side of the frame of this portion oi the machine. Rotation of the shaft 3G and conseipient reciprocation of the brush is secured by mechanismto be more fully hereinafter described. In order to secure suihcient pressure of the brush 33 upon the sheet passing through the machine and in order at the saine time to permit a free movement of the brush across the sheet with out in any Way adecting the ease of drive oi the crank 35 and connecting rod 34,31 ha ve provided arms 238 secured to the brush carrier 33 and which extend beyond the sides of the frame and which are alined over arms 39 bolted to the sides of the frame inrmediately beneath the arms 38. The mechanism for driving the feed rolls, the reciprocating brushes, the rotating brush, and the straightening devices, will'be described. Each of the feed rolls is provided with a pinion 76, and .lower roll of each side intermeshing so that the rolls will be driven in the same direction at their point of contact. Outside these pinions and preferably secured to the shafts of the lower' feed rolls are gears 77 which mesh with a series of worms 78 spaced along a drive shaft 79 journaled in bearings 80 longitudinally alinedon the side of the reservoir 14a. Secured to the endof the shaft 79, which is located at the delivery end of the unit A is a sprocket 81 and a drive pulley 8:2 from which the machine re- The sprocket 81 is connected by the chain 83With a sprocket 81 which is secured to a shaft 85 extending on the opposite side of the machine to the point where the crank shaft 36 which affects reciprocation of the brushes 33 and 50, is rotatively mounted. Power from the shaft 85 is communicated to the crank shaft 3G by means of a series of intermeshing gears 86, 87 and 88. ln order to drive the straightening rolls Q6 a gear 89 mounted on one of the shafts 18 of the first set of feed rolls 31 is of meshing with the pinion 28 which is frictionally' connected with the shaft 25 of the upper one of the straightening rolls. At the drive shaft end of the bed intermeshing pinions 90 and 91 are provided for permftting of the rolls being driven in unison. The means employe for driving the rotating brush 55 which scrubs the under surface of the sheets consists of two spiral gears 91 which communicate power from the driving shaft 7 9., transversely of the gears 95 located on the opposite side of the bed, one of whichv is secured to the shaft of the brush 55.
A modified form of device is illustrated in Figs. 13 and 14, this device consisting of two bars 96 and 97 bent at an angle with the apex located in the center of 'the bed and extending in the direction from which the sheets are coming. The bars are spaced apart a suflicient distance to permit of the passage ofthe sheets between them. In this construction the action is to cause I the turned up corners and other wrinkled or turned over portions of the sheet, to be straightened out, as shown in sheet straightening the pinions of each upper l the unit B, secured to a shaft 101 also extending trans-- machine to intermeshing dotted lines inFig. 13, the bars acting as a plow for pushing over the turned up edges and thus straightening the sheet. In this construction the gears 28 and 89, and fingers 17, as well as the pawl 23 and the friction device 29, are eliminated.
The mechanism for rinsing the sheets will now be described.
The rinsing mechanism, the wringing mechanism, and the primary planishing mechanism, are embodied in the single unit B. After the sheets have been passed from the unit A onto the fingers 58 thereof, they are dropped onto a series of rolls 96 located materially above a set of conveyer chains 97 passing from sprockets 98 secured to a sha-ft 99 extending transversely of the frame of and over a series of sprockets 100 versely ofthe frame ofthe unit B. The fra-me of the unit B is made into a reservoir 102 adapted to contain rinse water, and the Shafts 99 and 101' are journaled in bracket bearings 103 and 104 respectively, secured to the inner sides of the reservoir. The bracket 104 is however, located adjacent to the bottom of the reservoir while the bracket 103 is located adjacent to the top of the reservoir. This gives the chain 97 an inclination from the entering end of the reservoir downwardly toward its center, so that the sheets will be brought into the rinse water. .The purpose of locating the rolls 96 some distance above the receiving ends of the chains 97 is to permit the edge of the sheet to bend before it contacts the receiving ends of the chains and thereby dip the forward edge of the sheet under the water and thus prevent its planing across the surface of the water, which would prevent its being properly rinsed. Above the upper end of the 'conveyer chains 97 is located a spraypipe 105 which is arranged to throw a spray onto the sheets dipping into the baths or just previous to entering it. This is for the purpose of forcibly dislodging any clinging particles of solid materialv which may have been loosened from ytheir surfaces and which may have escaped the wiping or scraping devices 44 and 5G, so that when the sheet is immersed in the rinse water the solid :material will be floated therefrom and asa sheet is passed" farther into the bath it will be ilo moved from beneath the floating material these sprockets pass conveyer chains 107a which at their lowest points pass over sprockets 108 secured to the shaft 101 adjacent to the sprockets 100 over which the conveyer chains `\97 pass. Connecting the shaft 106 and the shaft-s 109 of a set of sheet rolls 110 located over the edge of the reservoir, are n series oi' gears 111, 112 113, 114 ond 115 through which power .from the shafts 1G is coinmunica'ted to the shaft 106 for driving the conreyer chdins 107 and 97. These feed rolls 110 pass the sheet from the conveyer chains 10T onto e series of fingers 116 which etend therefrom to the Wringer 1nd pini'shing rolls 117. The rolls 117 are preferably made of a suitable material, such as nickel steel, which Will withstand greet pressure and ect as planishing rolls :is Well oswringing rolls for squeezing any remaining moisture from the sheets. l'however, the 4planishing eEect is not desired, these rolls Inf-y he of yielding materia-l such ss'rubber which wili act solely es a Wringer for dryinc the sheets'. Suitable mechanism such es the conveyer belt 13 at the entering end of the unit and similar ineens at the delivery end of the unit D, are provided fon conveniently feeding the sheets to and delivering them from the machine. At one side of the conveyer 136 l preferably locnte e. gage plete 138 which adjustableon cross bers 139 so that it muy be positioned in e manner such that the sheets will be fed evenly through the machine, for the Varying sizes which ssed therethrough.

In combination in a machine for renovating metal sheets, a stia-lightening` mecha- -nism consisting of two straightening bars adapted to permit a sheet to pass between them, a scrubbing mechanism consisting of a brush, means for moving the brush over the sheet passing in engagement therewith, and a water feed pipe located adjacent to and adapted to distribute water on the brush, a wiping mechanism, a rinsing mechanism consisting of a reservoir, and a conieyer for immersing sheets into a bath contained in the reservoir and't'or removing themv therefrom, combined wringing and pianishing rolls, a drying mechanism, said mechanisms and said rolls being arranged for passage of sheets therethrough and substantially in the order named, and a coni'eyer operatively associated with the niecliiso i and rolls being arranged oven, a buiing mechanism, said mechanisms for passage of sheets therethrough and substantially in the order named, and a conveyer operatively as.- sociated with the mechanisms for passing sheets consecutively therethrough.
17. A machine for renovating metal sheets, comprising straightening, scrubbing and wiping'mechanism, and a conveyer for passing sheets consecutively through said mechanisms said conveyer consisting of a series ,o rolls having tires of yieldingmaterial adapted to engage the sheets.

A machine sheets, comprising a sheet straightening mechanism consisting of two straightening bars adapted to remain stationary and `to permit a sheet to be drawn between them, a scrubbing mechanism, and a drying mechanism operatively associated therewith, said mechanisms being arranged for consecutive passage of sheets therethrough.

In combination in a machine for renovating metal sheets, 'asheet straightening mechanism consisting of two straightening bars adapted to remain stationary and to permit a sheet to be drawn between them, scrubbing, wiping, rinsing, wringing, pianishing, and drying mechanisms arranged for passage of sheets therethrough andsubstantially in the order named, and a-,conveyer adapted to carry sheets through the machine and into operative relation with the mechanisms.

In combination in a machine for lrenovating metal sheets, a straightening mechanism consisting of two straightening bars v Sheets passing through remain stationary and to permit a sheet to be drawn between them, a scrubbing mechanism consisting of a brush and means for moving the brush over a sheet passing oin engagement Itherewith, .and wiping, rinsing, wr'nging, planishing, and drying mechanisms arranged for passage o sheets therethrough and substantially inthe order named.

In a machine "for renovating metal sheets, the combination of a sheet straightening mechanism consisting otwo straightening bars adapted to rotate to permitentrance of a sheet between them and to remain stationary to permit the sheet being drawn between them; after cessation of rotation, scrubbing, wiping, and rinsing mechanisms, combined wringing and planishing rolls, and a drying mechanism, said mechanisms and rolls being arranged for passage of sheets therethrough and substantially in the order named.

In coi'nbination in a machine for reno-4 vating metal sheets, a sheet straightening mechanism consisting ot' two straightening bars adapted to rotate to permit of the entrance otra sheet between them and to remain stationary and permit the sheet being drawn from between them afterl cessation of rotation, scrubbing, wiping, and rinsing mechanisms,. combined wringing andplanishing rollsfor receiving sheets from the rinsing mechanism, and a drying mechanism, the mechanisms and roils being arranged for passage of sheets therethrough and substantially in the order named, and a conveyer adapted to carry sheets into the machine and into operative relation with the mechanisms and rolls.

In combination in a machine for renovating metal sheets, astraightening mechanism consisting of two straightening bars adapted to rotate to' permit the enti-ance of a sheet between them and to remain stationary to permit the sheet being drawn from between .them upon cessation bf rotation, a scrubbing mechanism consisting of a brush, means for moving the brush -over a Sheet passing in engagement therewith, and a second means for yieldingly maintaining the brush in engagement with the sheet, a wiping mechanism, .tarinsing mechanism, qom'biined wringing and planishing rolls, and a 'drying mechanism, said mechanisms and rolls being arranged for passage of sheets therethrough and substantially in the order named.

A machine for renovating metal sheets, comprising a sheet straightening mechanism consisting of two Straightening `bars adapteih to rotate topermit the en-y trance of a sheet between them and to remain stationaiy to permit the sheet to be drawn from between them upon cessation of rotation, a scrubbing mechanism consisting of a brush, means for moving the brush over a sheet passing in engagement therewith, and a second meansforf maintaining the, brush in yielding engagement with the sheet, a wiping mechanism, a rinsing meehanism, combined wringing and planishing rolls, and a drying mechanism, said mechanisms and rolls being arranged for passage ot sheets therethrough and substantially in the order named. and a conveyer adapted to `Larry sheets through the machine and into operatii'e relation with the mechanisn'is and the rolls. y
