TUBE-VULCANIZER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 12, 1916,
Application led October 22, 1915. Serial N0. 57,351.
To all u'zomt ymay concern:
Be it known that I, CAssELL D. Hines, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Fort lYorth.. in the county of rl`arrant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tube- Yuleanizers, ot' which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to vulcanizers, and more particularly to vulcanizers for repairing inflatable tires; and the object is to provide a device which is simple in construction and convenient for operating on tubes of rubber for tires and other articles and which is strong and durable and simple in operation.
Another object is to provide a plurality of pressure plates all adapted to rest against a tube plate and to provide means for keeping the tube plate constantly7 hot.
Another object is to provide ready meansfor dryinlT the Other articles prior to vulcanizing. objects and advantages w1ll be fully 'explained in the following description and the invention will ,be more particularly pointed out in the claims.v
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings which form a part ot this application.
Figure l is a front elevation of the machine. F ig. 2 is a broken sectional view, taken substantially on the line of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the adjustable weight. Fig. i is a perspective view of one of the pressure pads. Fig. 5 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken on the line y-y of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a broken view,A illustrating the use 'of a spring instead of a weight for controlling the pressure pads.
Similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views.
The machinel is provided with and 2 which can be sufficiently braced by the rod or shaft 3 and the tube plate 4 and the rest bar 5. The rods 3 and 5 may be uprights 1 provided with lock nuts' 'for holding the frame rigid.' The tube plate 4 is mounted rigidly Ain the frame pieces 1 and 2 and is set on one corner to make the condensation of steam collect at a point below the appli cation of the pressure pads so that the condensation will not interfere with the propercuring of the rubber. Provision may be made for draining the condensation, as by a drain cock 7. The tube plate may be supplied with steam through a pipe 8. The
upper side of the tube plate 1 is made concave to receive 4the compressed air pipe'9 which receives compressed air from some supply source through a pipe 1o which is provided with a cock. T he air in the tube 9 will be heated by the hot steam in the tube plate 1 and is used for drying cement. as will be further detailed later. The bottom of theJ tube plate forms the pressure and heating surface against which the rubber tubes are pressed for curing.
A plurality of pressure pads are provided and these pads may be ot' different sizes, as the pads 12 and 13. Fach pad is made of a metal frame 1.1L and asbestos plates 15 and 16. The plate 15 is bolted to the metal plate 14 and the plate 16 is attached to the plate 15 by cement or other plastic attaching ma-4 terial. rThe plates 15 and 1G may be asbestos, cloth, rubber, or any suitable material that will not mar the inner tube. The plate 14 has depending ears 17 for attachment to a lever 1S, a lever being provided for each pad. The levers 1S are fulcrumed on the shaft or rod 3 and the'lower arm ot' each lever is provided with a pedal 19 in convenient reach of the foot ot' the operator. There is au advantage in having the axis or fulcrum of the levers between the operating weight or spring and pressure pad. An adjustable weight 2O is mounted on an arm Q1 which is integral with the lever 1S, a weight being provided for each lever. IThe weights press the pads 12 or 13 against the. rubber to be `vulcanized. A substitute for each weight mayfbe a spring Q2 which is connected to the arm r21 and to a bar 23 extending across the machine. when the operator puts his foot on a pedal 19 and presses down. the level-'1S will stop against the rest bar 5 and remain there while the operator adjusts `the. rubber tube on the pad. In operation, the operator can attend to a number of pads and have a number of rubber tubes curing at the same time.
Another advantage of the machine is the provision for drying the cement which is used in closin the cavities. The rubber cementv is dried y hot air. A hose 21 is connected with the compressed air pipe 9, which contains heated compressed air, receiving its heat from the tube plate i. The ho'se 24 is provided with an air cock or other device 25 for convenience in turningA which can be cured on a, tial; plate, such te the article and the cocks opened. The compressed air is readjvv te dri7 whateve article is necessari Y.
The triple armed lever 1S provides for quick action in locating the pad and for' placing the article to be treated on the tube plate to be preseefl. by the pad. The lever is operated bv the foot 'and the rest il provided so that the foot can hold the lever stationarv vv'hile the article to be treated is located. when the article iS located, the foot is removed and preseure isv applied automatically. The spring vvill .operate in the salue manner. The tube plate l is kept hot b v eteani and is alvvaye` really ler action at any 'point thereon.
Various changes may be made in the constructionl of the several parte` without departing' troni my invention. The niunber oi pads mayY be increased or decreased. The pads may be manipulated by hand as wellv as by the lfoot b v ueing the handle Q6.
The machine herein described is capable of general application for vulcaniffingr rulber tubes and various other rubber articles rubber bags and rubber boots.
