IMPROVEMENT IN LARD-COOLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,818, dated October 10, 1871.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, AMBROSE E. CAMP and CHARLES L. REID, of Louisville, in the county of J eft'erson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Lardand-Sirup Coolers, and we do hereby declare that the following is ai'ull, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 ofthe drawing' is a representation of a front elevation of our invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on line x w, Fig. 1.
This invention has relation to a method of cooling lard, sirups, Sac., and it consists ofthe heating devices and the novel construction of the improved apparatus hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents a stron g upright rectangular frame, which supports all the essential parts of this apparatus. B designates a long shallow trough arranged on top ot' the frame A and divided into several apartments, designed to contain different kinds of lard, which are to be heated in said trough previous to undergoing the process of cooling', as, for instance, leaf lard, head lard, and prime lard. This process is termed by pork-men drying.7 Each apartment ofthe drier B contains a wormpipe, marked b, arrai'iged in a horizontal position and communicating with a pipe, C, located in a suitable position and adapted to conduct steam from a boiler to the worm-pipes b in order to heat the drier, thc steam passing ott' through the ends of said worm-pipes. l) represents cylindrical tanks or Hake-stands arranged underneath the drier, and corresponding in number with the apartments of Each of these flake-stands contains a spiral coil or worm of pipe, marked d, which proceeds from one of the drier-apartments and extends through the bottom ofthe Hake-stand to a main tube, E. It is designed to conduct the heated lard or fluid through the cooling process, which is accomplished within the Hake-stand and is furnished with regulating-cocks e e', arranged respectively above and below the coil. These flake-stands are filled with cold water, supplied by any convenient means, and which is drawn oli when necessary through cocks F. The object ofthe cold water is to cool the iiuid descending through the coil. It may be allowed to remain stationary in the flake-stand or flow through a suitable pipe from a hydrant being inserted in the top and the cocks at the bottom left open. Gr indicates a tube proceeding from the steampipe C into each of the Hake-stands for the purpose of conducting steam, in order to regulate the temperature of the water. Each of the tubes G is furnished with a regulating or stop-cock, marked G. The duplication of parts, as herein described, is designed for the purpose of adapting the apparatus to the heating, cooling, and keeping separate different kinds of lard, and is unnecessary in treating sirups and the like. The pipe d extends above the bottom ofthe drier, so that the foreign particles or sediment, the result of settling may not escape through said pipe.
We are aware that lard-coolers have been manufactured by various parties that embody many of the devices shown in our apparatus; but we are coniident that the combination and arrangement of the several parts are novel with ourselves. The introduction of steam by the means employed we particularly regard as a new and valuable feature of our invention.
We claim as our invention- The steam-pipes C and G in combination with a lard-cooling apparatus, substantially as described. y
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
AMBROSE E. CAMP. CHARLES L. REID.
