To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. VVATTsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Ely, in the county of White Pine and State of Nevada, have invented certam new and useful Improvements in Indicators of Specific Gravity, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to recording instruments and particularly to a device for indicating the specific gravity of fluid and any variation in the specific gravity of fluid while in movement so that it may be determined whether thefluid flowing at any given time varies in specific gravity from that flowing at some other time, said device being capable of continuously recording the specific gravity of fluid and the tune in which the record is made;
A still further object of this invention is to provide novel means for maintaining a liquid at uniform level within a receptacle while, at the same time allowing movement of the fluid continuously during the operation of the device, means being also provided for regulating the discharge duct with relazion to the supply duct as thereby a constant evel of the fluid in the receptacle may be maintained.
A still further object of this invention is to provide means whereby the specific gravity of slime discharged from ore treating machinery may be determined to assist the operator in regulating the feed delivered to an oil flotation department.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which-- Figure 1 illustrates a view in elevation of an apparatus, the same being broken away to show part of the interior mechanism; and Fig. 2 illustrates a sectional view on the line aa of Fig. 1.

In the present embodiment of the invention, a sample of the slime from an ore treating apparatus is continually delivered to the receptacle A through a pipe 1, the said receptacle having a tubular extension 2 into which the pipe 1 discharges. Within the tubular extension 2, there is a deflecting cone 3 supported on a discharge pipe +1, the said discharge pipe being open to the interior of the receptacle A at the point 5 and extending to the exterior of the casing so that when'fluid in the receptacle A rises above a predetermined level, it will be discharged through the pipe 4, it being the purpose of the inventor that the volume of the fluid in the receptacle may be constant.
The bottom of the receptacle A has a discharge spout 7 through which the pipe 4 eX tends, the said pipe -l being of less diameter than the discharge spout at its junction with the receptacle so that an annular duct is formed around the discharge pipe for the flow of fluid from the receptacle and the said discharge pipe is supplied with a valve 6 regulating the discharge in order that it may be uniform with respect to the supply of fluid to the receptacle. It is essential in the operation of this device that fluid through the receptacle be kept in motion, otherwise sediment would collect in the bottom of the receptacle and in the discharge spout and the flow of liquid would quickly become interrupted.
The receptacle A has brackets 12 projecting from its wall on two sides and these brackets are aperturcd to receive guide rods 8 on which the brackets slide, the said receptacle being guided by this means. There are collars 9 adjustably secured on the rods 8 and their function is to limit the movement of the receptacle with relation to the diskC. One of the brackets 12 has a pivot 13 on which an arm 10 is mounted, said arm 10 having a slot 14 to receive a pivot 11, so that movement of the receptacle A vertically of the guide rods 8 oscillates the arm and moves it radially or approximately of the disk. By this means, the position of the receptacle A may be determined and if it moves up or down, due to reduced or increased specific gravity of the material passing through the receptacle, that fact will be a 20% feed be constantly delivered to the.

If the apparatus forming the subject matter of this invention registers 25% or if it registers 15%, it is known at a glance that to obtain thebest results, the feed should be thinned orthickened accordingly until the indicator registers 20%, which is the proper consistency for the best practical results.
By the present invention, it will be known at a glance at the indicator or disk, the consistency of the material being fed and in addition thereto, a record will be produced from which the tonnage treated may be calculated, thus a record of considerable value will be available. The bottom of the tank is removably secured to the main portion thereof .by bolts which extend through flanges. v
I claim 1. In an indicator for specific gravity, a receptacle, a tubular extension for receiving fluid delivered to the said receptacle, a discharge pipe extending upwardly in the receptacle and projecting into the tubular exingly supporting the receptacle, and anindicator operated by movement of the receptacle.

deflector in the tubular extension, means for supplying fluid to the tubular extension, a discharge pipe below the deflecting member through which 'liquid discharges from the receptacle when the level of fluid in the receptacle is abnormal, a discharge pipe leading from the receptacle, means for controlling the flow of liquid through the discharge pipe, means for yieldingly supporting the receptacle whereby its position may be changed under the influence of the specific gravity of its contents, guides for the re'ccptacle', brackets slidable on the said guide rods, an arm pivotally connected to one of the brackets, a pivot on which the arm oscillates, a recording disk, means for rotating the recording disk and a stylus carried by the arm adapted to mark the disk.
