IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING-CHAIRS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,754, dated October 10, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM GARDNER, of Glen Gardner, in the county of Hunterdon and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Folding-Chairs; and

I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact'description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the same, and in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved folding-chair, exhibiting it when un folded or ready for use; and Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof when folded together.

Similar letters of reference in the several figures refer to like parts.

This invention has reference to an improved folding chair; and it consists of the seat when pivoted to the rear or back legs and supported upon the front legs, also hinged or pivoted to the said back legs; and of the said pivoted seat having side projections and recesses upon its lower side in combination with back legs and hinged or pivoted front supports or legs having projections or stops, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

To enable others to make and use my inven tion I will proceed to describe it.

In the annexed drawing, A A refer to the back legs, which are made to extend upward in such a manner as to receive and afford a means to attach the back slats or pieces a a against which the back of the occupant of the chair rests. B B refer to the front legs or supports, which are of an angular shape, as are also the back legs just referred to, and which, when brought in contact with the latter, rest flush against the same, as plainly illustrated in Fig. 2, whereby economy of space is obtained. These supports or legs B B are hinged at their upper ends to the back legs A A by means of metallic plates fastened to the latter and having pins passing through them and the front legs, the said plates entering the said front legs in such a manner as to allow of the legs swinging freelythereon, whereby they may be thrown in toward or outward from the back legs when the chair is folded or Imfolded. 0 refers to the seat, which is pivoted to the back legs A A by fastening-plates having ears to its sides or con ners, and passing pins or pivots through said ears, entering said legs, as shown in Fig. 1. By so pivoting the said seat it will be seen that it can be readily and compactly folded up against the back of the chair and between the front supports or legs B B, thus taking up no room whatever by the seat other than that between the said front legs or supports, economizing to the furthest extent in space or room. To the sides of the seat 0 are fastened projections c, which are for the purpose of throwing the legs B B out when the seat is being unfolded, as will be readily seen in the practical operation of the chair. 0 c are recesses in the under side of the seat, which receive projections 12 b fastened to the front legs B B and permit of the seat being properly held in place upon said supports when the seat is unfolded or ready for use.

The advantages of this chair are as follows: The seat cannot be precipitated either at its rear or forward end should the occupant ofthe chair sit out of a line with the center of gravity, as is the case with other chairs constructed upon the principle of a folding chair, and the weight of the occupant is distributed upon both the back and front legs, lessening the liability of the pivots or supports of the seat giving way.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In combination with the pivoted seat 0 having the projections c and recesses c c, the back legs A A and front supports or legs B having the projections b b, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose described.
