Application filed March 23, 1916. Serial No. 86,134.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN J. LEONARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Lubrication Device for Car- Axles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to lubricating devices for axles and particularly to car axles, and has for an object the provision of an improved arrangement which may be used in connection with any kind of a car axle whereby an ample lubrication is provided at all times without wasting any material.
Another object in view is to provide a lubricating device formed from pieces of hair felt and a lubricant co-acting therewith.
A still further object in view is to provide a container for a lubricant, the container being formed of hair felt and also a fairing-pressed follower plate formed of hair felt coacting with the lubricant for applying the lubricant properly and for causing a wiping action against the axle so that the axle will be thoroughly lubricated but no excessive lubricant provided.
In the accompanying drawings :--Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through a journal box and associated parts showing an axle projecting therein and also a side view of a device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through Fig. 1 on line f2.2. Fig. 27 is a top plan view of the container shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates an axle of any desired. kind which extends into the box 2 and which engages the usual brass bearing 3. Arranged below and on the opposite side of the axle 1 to the brass bearing 3 is a container t, as shown more particularly in Fig. 2, which container is provided with sides 5 and (3 andends 7 and 8. The ends are provided. with arc-shaped openings 9 and 10, respectively, so that the ends may partially encircle the axle and thereby supply some of the lubricant 11 to the axle over a comparatively large area. The lubricant may be of any desired kind but preferably a special compound of oil and graphite made into a thick paste.
The container 1 is made from hair felt and may, if desired, be formed from a single piece of felt or separate pieces. In any event the ends are connected to the sides by suitable stitching 12, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the container may properly support the lubricant 11, which lubricant naturally saturates the felt and also saturates a hair felt follower plate 13 which is supported by springs 15 in such manner that the follower may press against the axle 1 and produce a wiping action thereagainst.
In order to properly hold the container 4 in place and to allow for the usual up and down movement of the axle, springs 15 are provided which support the container. A metal plate 17 may be arranged between the springs 16 and the container 4, if desired, so that the friction will. not cause the springs to in any way injure the container. By using the felt container and felt follower there will be provided a large number of. feed members continually in contact with the axle so that heating of the axle cannot take place. I
What I claim is 1. In a lubricating device of the character described, a hair felt container for lubricant, and means for pressing the container against a car axle.
2. In a lubricating device of the character described, a hair felt container for lubricant provided with cut-out portions at the ends for accommpdating a car axle, and means for holding the container in contact with the car axle.
3. In an axle lubricating device, a container for lubricant provided with notched ends whereby the container partially surrounds the axle, a hair felt follower arranged in the container and continually contacting with the axle, and means for holding the follower against the axle.
4. In a lubricating device for car axles, a hair felt container for lubricant provided with notches in the ends so that the container may partially surround the axle, a follower plate of hair felt submerged in the lubricant in the container, resilient means for pressing said follower plate against the name to this specification in the presence of axle for supplylng the axle wlth lubricant two subscrlbing Witnesses.
