JAMES EDGAR HOBBS, OF COULSDEN, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR T0 JOHN MALAN DE MENDOZA VER MEI-IR, OF LONDON, EN GLAND:
METALLIC SHEET-FILING.
Specification of LettersIPatent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1916.
Application filed March 21, 1912. Serial No. 685,186.
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, J AMES EDGAR HoBBs, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Coulsden, in the county of Surrey England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Metallic Sheet-lilmg, of which the following is a specificatlon.
My invention has reference to metallic piling for cofl'er dams and other constructional purposes and has for its 0b]6(3t to provide an improved pile having locking means formed integrally therewith upon each of its two longitudinal edges whereby contiguous piles may be interlocked to form a practically continuous wall of plllng of the desired extent.
The invention also refers to piles of that kind consisting of rolled metal sheets of channel or trough shape in cross section in which the bottoms of all the troughs when the piles are interlocked occupy a position upon one side of a line approximately through the center of the assembled piling while all the joints between juxtaposed piles are situated upon the opposite side of such central line as by such arrangement the least moment of inertia through the neutral axis of the assembled piling is increased.
More specifically stated the invention comprises forming upon one longitudinal edge of the pile and integrally therewith a flange terminating in portions which are so shaped as to form between them a longitudinally disposed arcuate groove or recess and in forming upon the opposite longitudinal edge of the pile a projection adapted to engage in and interlock with the arcuate groove upon the edge of an adjoining pile.
In order that my invention may be readily understood and carried into practice I will now proceed to describe a specific application for which purpose reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which the figure represents in section a rolled sheet metal pile constructed in accordance with this invention.
' In carrying my invention into effect the pile a which as shown is trough shape in cross-section is during the rolling formed with flanges Z) c from one of which projects at approximately right angles a web d as shown in dotted lines. Said web (Z is then bent so as to form between it and the flange b from which it projects a substantially D shaped recess a the end d of the web d not By providing by my invention an extended locking and contacting flange between which and the corresponding member such as (Z the D-sha-ped terminal portion 9 is received, I am enabled by having the terminal portion 9 extend behind the plane of the opposite flange member 0 to produce a form of sheet piling that against possible bulging is considerably more water tight and secure than any other providing a substantially flat surface at the joint. More over it will be seen that under my invention I am enabled to produce a rolled sheet pile of trough shape in crosssection in one piece with its locking means and which is capable of forming a secure and substantially watertight interlock with similarly formed piles at the same time possessing the maximum degree of strength and adaptability for being readily driven and redrawn after use.
I claim:
1. A sheet piling unit having a trough shaped portion and flanges on both sides the trough portion; said flanges being in the same plane; and locking members being integral with the free edges of said flanges; said members comprising a solid semi-circular boss, the flat side of which is parallel to the plane of flanges, and the curved side of which lies on the same side of said plane as said trough portion, said flat side also lying on the side of said plane toward said trough portion; and bifurcated looking member having a flat portion forming an extension of one of said flanges and in the same plane therewith, and a semi-circular web forming with said flat portion a recess for receiving a solid semi-circular boss, said web being also on the same side of said plane as said trough portion.
2. A sheet piling unit having a trough shaped portion and flanges on both sides the trough portion; said flanges being in the same plane; and locking members being integral with the free edges of said flanges; said members comprising a solid semi-circular boss, the fiat side of which is parallel to the plane of the flanges, and the curved side of Which lies on the same side of said plane as said trough portion; and bifurcated looking member having a flat portion forming an extension of one of said flanges and in copies of this patent may be obtained for the same plane therewith; and a semi-circular Web forming With said fiat portion a recess for receiving a solid semi-circular boss, said Web being also on the same side of said plane as said trough portion, said locking members lying entirely on one side of the neutral axis.
