ARTHUR I-IANNAY, OF GROTON, CONNECTICUT.
TAPPING AND REAMING DEVICE.
Application filed June 21, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR HANNAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Groton, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tapping and Beaming Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of referonce marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for use especially for tapping and reaming purposes and consists of a simple and efficient device of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device for holding work to be tapped and reamed. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, and Fig. 3 is an end view.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A. designates a stationary vise having a lateral extension B, and G is a movable jaw of a vise having a transverse threaded aperture D for the roception of an adjusting screw E which also passes through a threaded aperture in the shank portion of the jaw A. Said screw has a head E at one end which is transversely apertured for the reception of the operating handle F, said handle bearing against a lateral extension of the jaw A. Movable jaws, designated by letter N, hav- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 119316.
Serial No. 105,004.
ing shank portions 0 at right angles there to, are mounted to have vertical adjustment in the guideways or straps H upon the sides of the jaws. Adjusting screws S are mounted in unthreaded apertures of the jaws N and engage threaded walls of screws formed vertically in the upper faces of the jaws A and C. A hand lock, designated by letter T, consists of a screw with a pointed end mounted in an aperture in the jaw C andhas a handle T at its outer end, said tapering end of the screw being designed to engage the lateral extension D and hold it in adjusted position.
By the provision of a double vise attachment made in accordance with my invention, rings may be clamped by the two sets of jaws and held rigidly while being tapped or reamed, preventing the ring or article being tapped from springing and distorting the same during the tapping of the ring.
l Vhat I claim to be new is 1-- A. double vise apparatus for use in tapping and reaming, comprising a fixed jaw with a lateral extension and transversely apertured, a movable jaw mounted upon said extension and having transversely disposed apertures which are threaded, a screw swiveled in the aperture of the stationary jaw and movable through the threaded aperture of the other, the side of each of said jaws having a guideway, adjustable aws having shank portions mounted in said guideways and each adjustable jaw having an aperture therein, and screws swiveled in said apertures and engaging threaded portions of the fixed jaws.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR HANNAY.
