Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1916..
Application filed January 8, 1916. Serial No. 70,946.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY CRAWFORD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Type-Tie; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to appliances for use in printing-offices, and particularly to means for tying a quantity of type together in set-up form for subsequent use or to prevent pieing thereof until it can be disposed of.
The object of my invention is the provision of simple and inexpensive means of the character described which is capable of being applied to set-up jobs, pages or forms of type of different shapes and sizes, and is operable in an easy and quick manner to bind or release the same.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying the invention applied to a quantity of set-up type. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view of the device with a portion of the binding tape broken away and with the tightening means in released or open position. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device with the tightening parts in tightened or closed position and with portions of the tape broken away. Fig. 4c is a cross-section on the line a", 00 in Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a top View of the outer end portion of the movable tape engaging member.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body member of the type-tie, which in the present instance, is of L or right-angular form to adapt it to fit around one corner of a set-up quantity of type 2, and is preferably of metal or other suitable material of a rigid nature.
One arm, 1 in the present instance, of
the body member 1 carries a slide-bar 3 on its outer side for longitudinal sliding movements thereon, said bar being guided for such movements by outwardly turned edge portions 1 of the body arm 1 or in any other suitable or convenient manner. The outer end of the slide-bar 3 is provided with an l .-form of finger 5, which projects longitudinally from the bar end and then upward in hook form, as shown. The outer edge of the upstanding part of the finger 5 is preferably toothed or serrated, as at 5, for the purpose hereinafter described.
The sliding movements of the bar 3 on the body member 1 are controlled by a lever -6, which is pivoted to the member 1 at the outer side of the bar, with its pivot stud 7 projecting from said member and through a slot 8 in the bar. One end of the lever 6 is connected by a link 9 to the bar for communicating movements therewith from the-lever, and the other end of the lever is transversely broadened, as at 10, with the outer edge of such broadened portion flared outward as at 11. When the slide-bar3 is retracted and the lever 6 disposed in reclining position, as shown in Fig. 1, the broadened portion 10 of the lever is disposed at the outer side of the slide-bar finger 5. A length of tape 12, or other suitable pliant binding member, is attached at one end to the outer end of the arm 1 of the body member 1, being looped in the present instance, through a slot or opening 13 therein, the other end of the tape being left free for wrapping around a quantity of type 2, and then engaged to the finger 5 of the slide-bar 3.
In the use of my improved type-tie, the body member 1 is first placed in engagement with a corner of set-up type 2, provided the body member is adapted for fitting the corner, as in the present instance, and the tape 12 is then drawn closely around the type 2 and looped at or near its free end around the upstanding finger 5 at the outer end of the slidebar 3, which bar is then outwardly extended with respect to the body member 1, as shown in Fig. 2. This having been done, the lever 6 is forced down to its reclining position, thereby effecting a retraction of the slide-bar and a consequent greater tightening of the tape or binding member 12 around the type 2 to securely hold it in its set-up form. As the outer end of the lever 6 is forced down at the outer side of the finger 5, it engages the loopedback end portion of the tape 12 and clamps it to thefinger, and also serves to retain it in engagement with the toothed or serrated edge 5 of the finger, as shown in Fig. 3.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form-of the parts, as it is capable of numerous modifications without departing from-the spirit of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A type-tie having a body member, a pliant, binding part attached at one end to said member, a slide-bar carried by said member for movements lengthwise thereof and capable of adjustable engagement with said part, and means operable to reciprocally move said part on the body member.
2. A type-tie having a body member, a pliant binding part attached at one end to said member, a slide-bar carried by said member for movements lengthwise thereof and capable of adjustable engagement with said part, and means operable to reciprocally move said part on the body member and to coeperate with the slide-bar to retain said part in engagement therewith.
3. A type-tie having a body member, a tape attached at one end to an end of said member, a slide-bar carried by said member for movements lengthwise thereof and having a tape engaging part at one end, and a lever carried by said member and connected to said bar and operable to move the bar on said member and to cooperate with said part to clamp the tape thereto.
l. A type-tie having an angular body member, a slide-bar carried by and movable lengthwise of one of the arms of said member, a tape attached to one end of said member and adapted to be removably attached to said slide-bar, and means operable to move the bar to effect a contraction of the tape when in engagement with said bar.
5. A type-tie having an angular body member, a slide-bar carried by and movable lengthwise of one of the arms of said member, a tape attached to one end of said member and adapted to be removably attached to said slide-bar, and means operable to move the slide-bar to effect a contraction of the tape when in engagement with said bar and to secure the tape in adjustable tightened relation to said bar.
6. A type-tie having a body member of L-form, a slide-bar mounted for reciprocatory movements on one arm of said member lengthwise thereof and having an upstanding finger at its outer end, a tape attached to one end of said member and adapted to have its other end portion placed in looped engagement with said bar finger, and means operable to move said bar to contract the tape about an encircled object and to clamp the tape in engaged position to said finger.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
HARRY CRAWFORD.
