Grosse Pointe, Michigan, respectively, have invented certain new and useful llmprovements in Cylinder-Heads, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
This invention relates to heads for the cylinders of engines, and some of the objects of the invention are to provide a cyllnder head which ossesses certain advantages from a'manufacturing point of view; also to provide for theeven distribution of water throughout the entire area of the head; also to provide a cylinder head of considerable strength and rigidity having mealns for supporting the cylinder head wal Another object of the invention is to provide a combined water header and cylinder l head.

Referring to the drawings, the improved cylinder head is preferably made as a hollow metal casting with bottom and top walls l0, ll respectively, saidwalls being suitably spaced apart. rllhe 'bottom wall l0 is provided with one o r more depressions, asV

i3, lt and l5, there will be four hollow spark plug posts i6, 17, 18 and lt, there being one .post for each depression, each post connecting the wall of the depression vWlth the top wall of the cylinder head.
There will also be four hollow posts 21, 22, 23 and 24 to correspond with the four depressions mentioned, and these hollow posts form priming cock holes, so that there is one of these paired with each spark plug hole, but these hollow posts are preferably smaller than the spark plug posts. 'llhese posts constitute means for reinforcing and bracing the cylinder head wall at the de-` pressions. All of said postsare preferably in alineinent as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the upper wall l1 is provided with a recess such as 25 at the upper end of each of the sgarkplug posts.

The'apertures 35, 36 of said top wall are also of such size and so spaced apart, toward the ends of the said wall, as to give an even pull, along the water line, from the rear and front pairs of cylinders. In other words, these apertures are so located with respect to the cylinders and so proportioned in' size, that they tend to distribute the pump-impelled circulation univso formly over the cylinders.
It Vwill be noted that the cylinder head construction hereiniillustrated and described provides a` water chamber in which a free circulation of the water over the parts'to be cooled can take place, and, moreover, that the construction ofthe posts through 7which the spark plug openings and priming openings are led into the cylinder is such that a very .eli'ective reinforcement of the cylinder head is obtained Without unsightly and objectionable protuberances either upon the outside of the cylinder head or upon the inside of the cylinder. The maintenance of a smoothinterior surface is particularly desirable in thatit'prevents the excessive accumulation of carbon and other foreign substances in the cylinder and this constitutes oneof the important features of the invention.
lt is obvious that this invention is lsusceptible of modification, as parts may be omitted, parts added and parts modified without departing from the invention as eX- pressed in the claims.
What we claim as vnew is 1. A cylinder head for multi-cylinder engines, having spaced walls, one of which forms a part of the end walls of cylinders arranged in line, and elongated ribs integrally connecting said walls, said ribs being arranged lengthwise in line along the line of cylinders and spaced in said line to proyide transverse circulation directing openlngs.-
2. A cylinder head for multi-cylinder englnes, having spaced walls, one loi which forms a part of the end walls of'cylinders arranged `in line, and elongated ribs integrally connecting said walls, said ribs being arranged lengthwise in line along the line of cyllnders and being spaced opposite the ends of said4 cylinders. l '3. A cyllnder head for multi-cylinderengines, having spacedwalls forming a water chamber, one of said-walls forming a part of the end walls of cylinders arranged in` line, posts integrally connecting and backing said spaced walls, some of said posts being provided with sparkplug receiving openings and others of said posts being provided with priming openings, and relatively thin elongated ribs integrally connecting said spaced Walls and arranged in line along the line of cylinders, said linel ofribs being provided with transverse circulation directing openings.v l
4. A cylinder head for multi-cylinder engines having spaced walls forming a water chamber and one of which forms a part of the end walls of cylinders arranged in line, posts integrally connecting said spaced Walls nearone side of said line of cylinders, said posts being provided with openings ending flush with the inner walls of the cylinders, and relatively thin elongated ribs integrally connecting said spaced walls near the other side of said line of cylinders and arranged in line along said line of cylinders', said line of ribs being provided with transverse circulation directing openings.
5. A cylinder head for multi-cylinder engines` having spaced walls forming a water chamber, one of said walls forming a part of the end Walls of cylinders arranged in line, a water header located upon the other wall and of which said Wall forms the bottom, posts integrally connecting and back- 9 ing said spaced walls and located wholly within said chamber, and ribs integrally connecting said walls, said posts being located upon one side of said header and said ribs upon the other side.
6. .A cylinder head for multi-cylinder engines, comprising a hollow body with top and bottom walls and constituting a cylinder end water jacket, and elongated circulation directing ribs connecting said Walls and extending along the line of the desired flow of the water through said jacket, said line of ribs being provided with transverse circulation directing openings over the cylinder ends.
7 A cylinder head for multi-cylinder 'engines, having spaced walls forming a water chamber, one of said lwalls constituting also the end walls of cylinders arranged in line, said head having along its sides inlet openings for the water, and circulation directing ribs arranged in line along the line of cyl inders, said line of ribs being provided with transverse circulation directing openings.

A cylinder head for multi-cylinder engines, comprising a hollow body with top and bottom walls which form a water chamber, said walls each having a series oit de-` pressions into said chamber, the depressions of the two walls being opposed but spaced, hollow posts connecting said opposed depressions in' the two walls, and ribs connecting said walls and extending over the said depressions ofthe bottom wall in substantial alinement, but spaced endwise to torni a non-continuous partition near one side ot said body, said bottom *wall being provided with water inlet apertures.

A cylinder head for multi-cylinder engines, comprising a hollow body with top and bottom walls which lorm a water chamber, said walls each having a series Vout depressions into said chamber, the depressions of thetwo walls being opposed but spaced, hollow posts connecting said. opposed depressionsin the two walls, and ribs connecting said walls. and extending over the said depressions of the bottom wall in substantial alinement, but spaced endwise to form a non-,continuous partition near one side ot said body, said bottom wall being provided with water Iinlet apertures, and a water-outlet*header-member extending longitudinally along that side ot the top wall adjacent said ribs and communicating with the water space of said body. v

A cylinder headtor multi-cylinder engines, comprising a hollow body having a top wall and a bottom wall, and constituting a water jaclret, said bottom wall forming the end wall oit cylinders arranged in line, and anoutlet header extending along said top wall, 'said top wall constituting the bottom ot said outlet header and being provided with circulation directing and controlling apertures located at diiderent points spaced along said line oit cylinders and attording communication between ,said water jacket and said header.

A cylinder head tor multi-cylinder engines, having spaced wallstorming a water ch amber, one ot said walls constituting also the end walls et the cylinders, a water said wall forms the bottom, said wall being provided with apertures affording communication between said water chamber and said header, and-said apertures being so proportioned to the rate of flow and so spaced and located over the cylinders with respect to the general direction of the circulation of the water through said header -and through said water chamber that they direct the circulation and distribute it substantially equally over the cylinders.
14. A cylinder head for multi-cylinder engines, having spaced walls forming a water chamber, one of said Walls constitutingalso lthe end wallsof the cylinders, an outlet header upon the other wall and of which said wall forms the bottom, said header having an outlet opening and being constructed to direct the water to said opening, and said bottom wall being providedwith circulation directing and controlling apertures so spaced and located with respect to the cyl- 'inders and so proportioned that they tend to distribute the circulation uniformly over the cylinders.

A cylinder head for multi-cylinder engines, comprising a hollow body having a top wall and a bottom wall and constituting a water jacket, said bottom wall forming the end wall ot cylinders arranged in line, andan outlet header extending along said top wall and along the line of cylinders and constructed to conduct the circulating water to one end of said line, said top wall of said .body constituting the bottom ot said outlet header and being provided with apertures so spaced and located with respect to Y the cylinders and with respect to the direction ot movement ol" the water through the header that they tend to distribute the circulation equally over the cylinders.

A cylinder head tor multi-cylinder engines, comprising a hollow body having a top wall and a bottom wall and constituting header lupon the other wall and of which i ltll a water jaclret, said bottom wall forming the end walls of a series of cylinders arranged in line andan outlet header extending along said top wall and along the line of cylinders, which wall constitutes the bottom of said outlet header, and is provided with apertures, within said header, said apertures being spaced apart and located near the ends ot said top wall.

A cylinder head for multi-cylinder engines, comprising a hollow body having spaced top and bottom walls forming a water chamber, said bottom wall forming the ends 'of cylinders arranged vin line and having inlet openings 'along the sides of said head for the cooling water, ribs arranged in line along one side of the line of cylinders and spaced to direct the circulating water over the cylinder ends, posts connecting said top andV bottom walls and so arranged toward `the othervside 'of the line of cylinders as to direct the circulating water coming in at that side of the line over i the cylinder ends, said line of ribs and said posts being spaced to provide an uninterrupted passage over the cylinder ends along and a water header located |above said passage and separated therefrom by the top wall, said wall being provided-with openings of such size and so spaced as to direct the circulation substantially equally over the cylinder ends. 2Q. A. cylinder head for multi-cylinder engines, comprising a hollow body having formingl a water chamber, said bottom wall forming 'the ends of cylinders arranged'l in line and having inlet openings along the sides of said head for the cooling water, ribs arranged in line along one sideoflthe line of .cylindersand spaced to direct the circulating water over the cylinder ends, posts con- .necting said top and bottom walls and so arranged toward the other side of the line of cylinders las to direct the circulating Water'ccming in at that side of theline over' the cylinder ends, said line of ribs and said posts being spaced to provide an uninterrupted passage over the cylinder ends along the line of cylinders, and a water header located above said passage and separated therefrom 'by the top Wall, said header being constructed to discharge at one end of the line of cylinders, and said wall being provided with openings into said header located near the ends of said line.

A cylinder head for multi-cylinder engines, having spaced walls forming a water chamber, one of said walls constituting also the end walls ofvcylinders arranged in line, said head having along its sides inlet openings for the water, and circulation directing ribs connecting said walls and larranged in line along the line of cylinders, said ribs backin and reinforcing the cylinder ends and being spaced opposite the middle portion of said cylinder ends to insure a circulation of the water over the cylinder ends crosswise of the line of cylinders.
22, A cylinder head for multi-cylinder engines, having spaced walls forming a water chamber, one of said' walls constituting also the end .Walls of cylinders arranged in line, ay water header located upon the other wall and of which said wall forms the bottom, and circulation directing ribs extending in line alongY the line of cylinders, said line of ribs being provided with transverse circulation directing openings and said bottom wall of said water header being provided with circulation directing and controlling apertures spaced along the line of cylinders.

A cylinder head for multi-cylinder engines, having spaced walls forming. a water chamber, one of said walls constituting also the end walls of cylinders arranged in line, a water header' located upon the other wall and of which said wall forms the bottom, and circulation directing ribs arranged in line along the line of cylinders, said line of ribs being provided withtransverse circulation directing openings and saidicylinder head having alon wall of said water header being provided with circulation directing and controlling ing also the end walls of cylinders arranged in line, an outlet header upon the other wall and of which said wall forms the bottom,
and circulation directing ribs arranged in line along the line of' cylinders and at one side of said outlet header, said cylinder head its sides inlet openings for rthe water, t e bottom having inlet openings upon the side of said lineof ribs remoteffrom said outlet header, and said line of ribs being provided y with transverse circulation directlng openings,

A cylinder head for multi-cylinder engines, having spaced Walls forming a Water chamber, one ot said Walls constituting also the end Walls of cylinders .arranged in line, circulation directing ribs arranged in line along the line lof cylinders, said line of ribs having transverse circulation directing openings opposite the cylinder ends, and an outlet header upon the other Wall of said chamber and of Which said Wall forms the bottom, said header being constructed to discharge the Water at one end of said line of cylinders and having circulation directing and controlling apertures in its bottom located near the respective ends of said line of cylinders.

A cylinder head for multi-cylinder engines, having spaced Walls forming a Water chamber, one ot said Walls constitut ing also the end Walls ofcyli'nders arranged in line, said cylinder head having along its sides inlet openings Jfor the Water, circulation directing ribs arranged in line along the line of cylindersband spaced opposite" the cylinder ends to provide transverse circulation directing openings, an outlet header on the outer wall of said chamber and of which said Wall forms the bottom, said outlet header extending along the line of cylinders and having in 'its bottom apertures providing communication with said chamber and located at points spaced along the line of cylinders.
