Description

W. R. SCHMITT.
ROAD DRAG ATTACHMENT.
APPLICATION men OCT. 23, 1915.
Patented Sept. 5, 1916.
WILLIAM R. SCHIVIIT'L' 0F NICHOLS, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HENRY BRAUN, OF NICHOLS, IOWA.
ROAD-DRAG ATTACHMENT.
Application filed October 23, 1915.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. SCHMITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nichols, in the county of Muscatine and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Road-Drag Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to road drags; and it contemplates the provision of a rider attachment constructed with a view to affording a comfortable and convenlent drivers seat and efl'ectually preventing side draft and skidding and the consequent impairment of the efliciency of the apparatus.
The invention also contemplates the provision of a peculiar and advantageous coupling between the road drag and the rider attachment whereby adequate adjustment of the apparatus may be quickly and easily effected as conditions require.
Other advantageous features of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating the attachment as properly connected with the road drag. Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section showing connection of pipe section to one frame bar of the drag. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section showing the connection of the long brace to the pipe section.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
The road drag 1 comprises longitudinallydisposed frame bars 2, and is otherwise, by
v preference. of the ordinary well known construction. I would, however, have it clearly understood that'the drag may be of any other construction compatible with the purpose of my invention, without involving departure from the scope of the same as claimed.
Among other elements, the rider attachment 3 comprises an axle 4, a bar 5 fixed to and reaching forwardly'from the axle, a seat support 6 fixed to and rising from the axle, a seat 7 on said support, and traveling on ground wheels 8 loosely mounted on the axle, adjacent to the ends thereof, and each having a peripheral flange 9, arranged at Specification of Letters Patent.

one of its sides. These flanges are adapted to cut into the roadway and are therefore adapted to prevent skidding of the drag and this without increasing the draft, with the result that the pull is'directly on a line with the motive power and the dragging is rendered easy and is not attended by slipping or sidewise sliding.
Extending forwardly and outwardly with reference to the axle 4 are braces 10, preferably sheet-metal bars, and fixed to the rear portions of said braces and slipped on the end portions of the axle 4 are castings 11 which are retained on the axle by cotter pins 12 or other suitable means.
Bolted or otherwise fixed to and rising- I from the rear portions of the outer frame bars 2 of the drag 1 are castings 13. These castings 13 are provided near their upper ends with apertures 1 1 to receive a transverse pipe section 15, and above said apertures 1 1 the castings are split, as indicated by 16, and are equipped with edgewise-disposed bolts 17 whereby they may be clamped on the pipe section to firmly hold the same tothe drag. I
Bolted on or otherwise fixed to the braces 10 are castings 18 and '19. These castings are respectively provided with an aperture 20 to receive the pipe section 15', andwith a split forward end 21 which is intersected'bfv an edgewise-disposed bolt 22. The bolts 22 serve to clamp the said castings on the pipe section.
It will be gathered from the foregoing that all of the connections to the pipe section 15 are adjustable, and therefore the riding attachment can be quickly and easily fixed in the desired position with respect'to I the road drag. I would also have it under- 1. The combination of a road drag, normally-open split castings fixed to and rising from the drag and having apertures and also having clamping means intersecting the split portions, a transverse rod "of circular form in cross-section, clamped in the apertures of the castings, an attachment having an axle and Wheels thereon, side braces, castings fixed to said braces and clamped 0n the rod on the drag, and castings intermediate the braces and the axle and loosely mounted and secured on the latter.
2. The combination of a road-drag, normally-open slit castings thereon, a trans verse'rod, of circular form in cross-section, clamped and adjustably fixed in the castings, a rider-attachment having an axle, a
seat supported on the axle, and Wheels mounted on the axle, and side braces connected With the axle and having castings clamped and adjustably fixed on said transverse rod.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of tWo subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM R. SCHMITT.
