COMBINED CARTON AND MEGAEHONE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, rate.
Application filed January 26, 1916. Serial No. 74,419.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW H. ROIKJER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boise, in the county of Ada and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Cartons and Megaphones, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has as its object to provide a combined carton and megaphone, the article being so constructed that it may be initially employed as a container for pop-corn, peanuts, or the like and when emptied, may be employed as a megaphone. Incidentally, the invention contemplates the provision of a simple and inexpensive article of the class mentioned which will prove a decided novelty at base ball and other games and will be sufficiently substantial to permit of its being retained as a souvenir, if desired.
One aim of the invention is to provide the device with novel means whereby the score may be kept and which means may constitute a final score indicating device.
Another aim of the invention is to provide a score keeping device which will initially serve as a means for retaining the contents of the carton in place and will, there fore obviate the use of cords, caps or other extraneous devices for this purpose.
The invention further aims to provide an article of the class described so constructed that the same may be shipped in large numbers in compact condition and readily set up for use.
The invention also aims to provide the article with a novel form of handle whereby it may be conveniently carried and manipulated when being used as a megaphone.
Another aim of the invention is to provide the article with novel means located at the mouthpiece thereof for producing sound.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the manner in which the device is to be employed as a megaphone, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device in its initial condition as for example, as when used as a carton, Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional View through the device, Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating the manner in which the score strips may be adjusted, Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional View through one side of the mouthpiece of the article, Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank from which the same is formed, Fig. 7 is a perspective view illustrating a slight modification of the invention, and Fig. 8 is a detail longitudinal sectional View through a portion of the device shown in Fig. 7
The article embodying the present invention may be formed from stiff cardboard or in fact, from any material possessing the desired rigidity and sufficiently inexpensive to warrant its use and initially, the blank from which the device is formed is of the shape shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, the same comprising a body 1 which is substan tially of segmental form and which has a convex arcuate major end edge and a concave arcuate minor end edge, the lateral edges of the blank, generally speaking, converging in the direction of the said last mentioned edge thereof. Adjacent one lateral edge, the blank is formed with a relatively long slit 2 which extends parallel to the said edge and with slits 3 which extend in alinement with the slit 2 and parallel to the said edge of the blank. The opposite lateral edge of the blank is formed near its ends with looking tongues each comprising a shank portion 4 and tabs 5 which may be folded upon dotted lines substantially coincident with the opposite edges of the shank 4 to provide for the insertion of the said tongues through the slits 3 after which insertion, the tab portions 5 may be again moved back into the plane of the shank portion '4 so as to form shoulders to lock with the walls of the slits 3, it being understood that the blank is bodily rolled to conical form before the insertion of the locking tongues in the said slits. It will be apparent, however, that the blank may be given some other form asfor example, a frusto-pyramidal form or a substantially triangular form. At its last mentioned lateral edge and between the locking tongues above described, the blank is formed with an extension and this extension is provided with an arcuate incision indicated by the numeral 6, the incision being concentric to the outer edge of the said extension so that between the incision and the said edge of the extension, there is provided an arcuate' or curved handle indicated by the numeral 7 which may be grasped in carrying the arti cle and in manipulating the same when used as a megaphone. The slit 6 defines the body portion of the extension which constitutes a locking tongue 8 adapted for insertion in the slit 2 when the blank is rolled or folded ton and also serving to render the device more substantial and enable it to permanently retain its set up form while being used as a, megaphone. As the. article is, when setup, interiorly tapering from end to end, its minor end will be sufficiently small in diameter to prevent the loss of a bag of peanuts or aroll of pop-corn placed withinvthe article. It is desirable however,
"that some means be providedfor preventing loss of the contents through the major end of'the article and as before stated, this means ls designed to serve also as a score indicating dev ce.
In that form of the invention, shownin 2 Fig.2 of the drawings, the wall of the de- .vice at its major end is formed wlth two pairs of spaced slits indicated by the numeral 9 and a strip 10 is threaded at one end through the slits of each pair and the slits are extended transversely across the major open end of the carton in crossed relation as shown in the said Fig. 20f the drawings and at their other ends, are se- I cured by means of adheslve as indlcated at article.
; convenient.
11 to the inner side of the wall of the said It is preferable that each of the strips be provided adjacent its last mentioned end with a. small adhesive area indicated at 12 and which serves a purpose to be presently explained. The strips 10 may be of anysuitable material such for example, aspaper or cloth or thin flexible metal and it will be apparent that in the initial arrangement of the same as shown in Fig. 2, they will serve effectually as a means for preventing loss of the contents of the carton; When it is desired to remove the contents, the last described ends of the StllPS.
are torn at their line of connection with the wallof the carton and the contents may then be consumed as found desirable and As the game progresses, the strips may be drawn through the slits 9, one
' of said slits being preferably designated by the word Home and the other by the word Visitors or if desired, by the names of thecontesting clubs, and as the strips are so adjusted, numerals 13 printed or otherwise indicated thereon will be brought successively in view. and in position between the. slits 9. In this manner, a score may be kept without the employment of a pencil and without interfering with the use of the article either as a cartonwhile its contents are being consumed or as a megaphone after its contents have been removed. At the end of the game, if it is desired to keep a permanent record of the score, the adhesive areas 12 may be moistened in the last adjusted position of the strips and caused to adhere to the inner side of the wall of the carton so that the strips cannot be pulled farther through the slits 9.
In that form of the invention shown in Figs. 7 and S of the drawings, the arrangement of the strips is substantially the same as in the form shown in Fig. 2 except that in this modified form, the wall of the carton is formed with four sets of the slits 9 and the strips are crossed and have their opposite ends inserted through diagonally opposite sides of the slits.
If desired, a noise creating device may be employed in connection with the mouthpiece of the megaphone and one form of such device is shown in Figs. 2 and 5 of the drawings. As illustrated in these figures, the minorend' edge of the blank is formed with an extension 1% provided with spaced incisions 15 forming between them a tongue 16. The noise creating device itself comprises two strips of metal indicated by the numeral 17 about which strips is wound a suitable length of tape 18, the tape being drawn tightly and an intermediate portion of its length being stretched taut between the strips 17 as indicated at 19 so as to form a vibratory web designed to produce a noise when the device is placed between the lips and blown through. In assembling the noise creating device with the extension 14- one wrapping of the tape 18 is passed over the tongue 16 of the said extension and through the incisions 15.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an article of the class described, a hollow body having an open end, a member extending across the open end of the body and constituting a means for retaining the contents of the body, the said member being movable with relation to the body, and coacting means upon the said member and body for the keeping of a score.
2. In an article of the class described, a hollow body, and strips slidably engaging the wall of the body and separably connected each at one end to the said wall of the body and constituting score indicating and contents retaining means.
3. In an article of the class described, a hollow body, and means located at the open end of the body and arranged initially to retain the contents of the body, and cooperating means upon the body and first-mentioned means for use in the keeping of a game score.
4. In an article of the class described, a hollow body open at one end and provided at its other end with sets of slits diametrically oppositely located, and a strip slidably fitted at its end portions through the said sets of slitsand extending transversely of the said end of the body.
5. In an article of the class described, a hollow body open at one end and provided at its other end with sets of slits diametrically slits.
G. In an article of the class described, a hollow body open at one end, and strips each. slidably assembled with the wall of the body and separably connected at one end with the said wall, the strips extending transversely across the said end of the body and before separation of their last mentioned ends constituting means for retaining the contents of the body, the strips subsequent to such separation of their said ends being adapted to be adjusted with relation to the body whereby to constitute a means for the keeping of a game score.
7. In an article of the class described, a blank provided at its opposite lateral edge portions with means adapted to interlock when the body is rolled to hollow form, the said body at one lateral edge being provided with a handle extension.
8. In an article of the class described, a blank provided at its opposite lateral edge portions with means adapted to interlock when the body is rolled to hollow form, the said body atone lateral edge being provided with ahandle extension and being formed within the bounds of the said extension with a locking tongue engageable with the inner side of the body at the other lateral edge thereof.
9. In an article of the class described, a hollow tapered body formed at one end with spaced slits, a score numeral carrying strip slidably inserted through the said slits and arranged whenadjusted to have its said numerals displayed between the slits, and an adhesive carried by the said strip.
10. In an article of the class described, a hollow tapered body provided at its minor end with an extension of its wall, and a sound creating device carried by the said extension.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signa ture.
