CROSS-DRUM BOILER.

To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. MEIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phoenixville, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cross- Drum Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cross drum boilers, the object of the invention being to provide an improved construction of boiler having headers connected by water tubes with a cross drum above one of the headers directly. connected to the said header below, and havin relatively large water tubes connecting said drum with the other header, said large tubes constituting strong backbones strengthening the boiler unit.
A further object is to provide a boiler or unit of the character stated which embodies the maximum of strength and durability, and yet is of extremely simple construction, and which readily lends itself to combinations of units to form boilers in any desired horse power and size.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section illustrating my improved boiler. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view partly in section, and Fig. 4 is a view in section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
1 and 2 represent boX headers which are connected by water tubes 3. Above the header 2, the cross drum 4 is located, and telescoping coupling necks 5 and 6 connect header 2 and drum 4. These necks 5 and 6 are of relatively large diameter, in fact, preferably of the maximum diameter permitted by the header 2. These necks have lianges 7 at their ends, and the flanges of necks 5 are on the inside of the drum 4, while those of the necks 6 are on the outside of the header 2. As the flanges 7 are on the inside of the drums and header, they reinforce the openings, avoiding the necessity of stays across the openings. It will also be noted that the boX headers are of two telescoping sections Specification of Letters Patent.

which constitute backbones for the boiler. These tubes 8 are connected to the header l and to the drum 4 by necks 9 which corre* spond to the necks 5. Thatis to say, these .necks 9 have'iianges 10 which are located against the inner face of the header and of the drum 4 respectively, and constitute a rigid strong securing means for the backbone tubes 8.
In the drawings I have illustrated the headers as supported in the front and rear walls 11 and 12 of the furnace structure with the fire boX 13 below the forward end of the boiler. y
14 is the outlet for smoke and gases supported in the top wall 15, and 16 is the outlet for steam from the drum. v
17 and 18 are baffles which are supported on the tubes 3, and direct the smoke and gases from the fire boX to the iiue 14.
While I have illustrated my improved boiler or boiler unit in connection with a particular kind of furnace, it is of course to be understood that the invention is not limited in this particular as the boiler readily lends itself to variousstyles of furnace structure, and also to various combinations of units.
As above stated, the tubes 8 are relatively large and strong, and they constitute a direct connection between header 1 and drum 4, not only allowing a free circulation of water, but also constituting strong braces which relieve the water tubes 3 of strains to which they would ybe subjected, and which strengthen theentire boiler construction.
Various slight'changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a boiler, the combination with a vpair of box headers `and ,relatively small icc water tubes connecting them, of a cross drum above one of the box headers, pipes connecting the side of the drum with the box header farthest removed therefrom, a neck depending from and projecting through a hole in the bottom of the drum, said neck connecting with an outlet in the header below the drum, said neck having a flange positioned within the drum and of larger diameter than said hole and forming a passage from the drum to the box header below, necks forming fitting supports for said second-mentioned pipes, each of said latter necks extending through holes in the drum and said farthest removed header and having flanges within the drum and said latter header, substantially as described.
2. In a boiler, the combination with a pair of box headers, and relatively small water tubes connecting them, of a cross drum above one of the box headers, relatively large inclined pipes connecting the side of the drum with the box header farthest removed therefrom, a neck depending from and projecting through a hole in the bottom of the drum, said neck having a iiange positioned within the drum and of larger diameter than said hole, a second neck secured to the top of the box header below the drum, said necks jointly telescoping one within the other and forming a passage from the drum to the box header below, necks forming fitting supports for said inclined pipes, each of said latter necks extending through holes in the drum and said farthest removed headerl and having flanges within the drum and said latter header, substantially as described.
