IMPROVEMENT IN CANS FOR HVDROCARBON LIQUIDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,657, dated October 3, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IRA W. SEALER, of Brookyn, Kings county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cans for Holding Hydrocarbon Liquids, of which the fol lowing is a specification:

My invention consists of a can for hydrocarbon liquids in which the apertures or openings leading to the oil or inflammable liquid within the can are protected by wire-gauze, substantially in the manner hereinafter described. It is well known that many serious and fatal accidents occur from the pouring out from ordinary oil-cans of naphtha or other burning fluids of an inflammable character now extensively used for filling lamps, 800., and it is therefore most desirable that a can should be devised for household and like uses whose openings are so screened and guarded that fire cannot be communicated from the exterior to the interior of the can. This result is attained by my invention.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of a can made in accordance with my said invention.

The can A in most respects is constructed like an ordinary can, being provided with the fillingorifice a and discharge-spout I), as usual. In pursuance of my invention I protect the filling-orifice by means of a wire-gauze screen, 0, which is affixed to a tube or socket piece, (I, designed to receive the can-cork or stopper f. The gauze screen is, of course, attached to the tube (1 below the point to which the cork or stopper extends. The spout b from which the liquid is usually poured is provided at its outer end with a wiregauze cap, 9, which, being at the extreme end of the tube, prevents the fire from being communi cated through it to the liquid within either the spout or the can. As an additional safeguard a like cap or screen, h, may be provided at the junction of the spout with the can.

By this means absolute security against fire or an explosion of the contents of the can is attained. I can take a can of the construction described, fill it with naphtha, and then pour from it the liquid into a fire blaze without fear of igniting the contents of the can. The fire will not and cannot extend further than the wire-gauze screens. This I have done frequently in demonstration of the absolute safety of the can from fire or explosion of inflammable gases.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The combination, with a can for holding hydrocarbon liquids, of a stopper-receiving tube or socket closed by a wiregauze screen or cap, substantially as shown and described.

2. A can for holding hydrocarbon and other inflammable liquids, provided with a dischargespout and fillin g-orifice or stopper-receiving tube, combined with protecting diaphragms of wiregauze, as herein shown and set forth.
