To all whom it may concern Bc it known that I, HOLMES MARSHALL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Type-lVriting and Computing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined typewi'iting and computing machine of the Underwood-ILIanson type. l It hasbeen found, in actuating a combined typewriting and computing machine, that 'some operators, through carelessness or for'- getfulness, after making an error while computing, will erase said error from the work sheet on the platen because it is so obvious and directly before their eyes, but will neglect to readjust the computingr mechanism so as to clear the error therefrom; the result bein an inaccurate computation.
An object therefore of this invention is to prevent the turning back of the platen to erase an error from the work sheet thereon until the errorvhas been cleared from the computing mechanism by an actuation of the error key.
Inasmucli as when the end of a line is reached, in a combined typewriting and computing operation, it is necessary to return the typewriter carriage, line-space the platen, and cause a complete cycle of the general operator of the computing mechanism, it is desirable to relieve the operator of the labor and care incident to carrying out, individually, the several operations.
It is therefore a further object of this invention to utilize the actuation of the lever which concomitantly returns the carriage and line-spaces the platen, to enable a complete cycle of the general operator of the computing mechanism by causing a connection thereto of motive means.
The machine with which this invention is illustrated is of the Underwood-Hanson type, in which the numeral keys are con nected, so that whenthey operate the type bars, they, individually, will also depress or set up each time a single pin, in a line of pins located a certain distance from a given line, corresponding to the particular key Specification of Letters Patent. struck. The pins are supported in a series on bars, one for each numeral key on each bar. The bars are` operated successively to correspond to the successive letter spaces or denomination columns through the inter mediary of a series of jacks operated successively by a tappet, or a series of tappets carried by the carriage, as vthe carriage moves step-by-step in a letter feeding direction. The pins thus set up determine the extent of movement, of the bars on which they are located, caused by a general operator brought in action after the pinsetting operation has been completed. The bars act'uate a series of computing wheels amounts corresponding to their extent of movement. If an error occurs, the pins may be cleared, that is, brought back to their normal unset position, before the actuation of the general operator to carry the set-up or indeXed' calculation to the computing wheels, by the depression of an error key.
To erase an error from the work sheet, the typist generally rotates the platen by manipulating one of the knobs carried thereby, to bring the'typewritten line on the work sheet up to a convenient position above the platen. In this invention, the knobs are connected to the platen so that they will be incapable of rotating the platen in a linespacing direction to bring the typewritten line up to an erasing position. Also in this embodiment of the invention the knobs are connectible to the platen by ball and camcup clutches. The clutch for one of these knobs, in this case the left hand one looking at the machine from the front, is faced in such a direction that it may rotate the platen backward but not forward. The clutch for the other knob, that is, the right hand knob, is faced in the opposite direction, so that by rotating this knob in a clockwise direction, itwill rotate the platen forward. This latter knob, however, .is locked against movement normally by a pawl and ratchet wheel mechanism. The pawl and ratchet lock is releasable at the actuation of the error key through the intermediary of linkages, so
that the right hand knob will be free to rotate the platen to raise the work sheet to an erasing position after the computing mecha nism has been cleared by the actuation of the error key.
In the particular type of the invention illustrated, it is found convenient to leek the error key in its actuated position, se that the typist can have both hands free to perform the erasure on the Work sheet. It is evident that if the typist forgot to release the error key before continuing' ivith the actuation of the machine to complete the computation. the accurate operation of the computing mechanism yvould be interfered ivith. There is therefore provided means for preventing' the complete actuation of the keys. type bars and other connected mechanism while the error key is in its depressed or actuated position.
The general operator above mentioned is actuated by a motor normally disconnected therefrom. but connectible thereto by an au tomatic clutch. which in this case is brought in play through the intermediary of linkages. ivhen the combined platen-spacing` and carri age return lever is operated at the end of a line. 1n other yvords, When the carriage is returned fo a new line, the computing' mechanism ivill be given a complete cyg cle of movements by the concomitant connec tion of the general operator with the motor.

In the accompanying' drawings, Figure 1 is a part sectional side elevation of an nder\vood-llanson combined typeivriting' and adding' machine embodying' the present im provenients. A continuously running' electric or other motor 1 is provided ivith a main shaft 2. the latter connected to a shaft 3 by means of a satety friction clutch, not slioyvn. A rack 13, forming' part of a rack frame or general operator, is movable forwardly and backwardly in the base of the adding' machine, and performs the final portion of the computing operation. This rack frame is reciprocated intermittently by the constantly rotating' shaft 3, by means of a clutch mechanism; said rack frame being' connected to a crank shaft to be driven thereby, and the crank shaft being connected by a ivorm gearing to said shaft 3, as .vill presently be set forth. Upon the rack frame is secured a yoke or carrier 1l, in engagement yvith which is the upper end of an arm 15, provided on a cross head 16, ivhich moves forivardly and baekivardly, or from left to rig'ht at Fig' 1, so as to reciprocate said i'ack frame 13; said cross head being` carried on a horizontal slide 17. ivliich works in bearings 1S on a casing 1f). This slide reciproeated by means of a crank 23. fixed on a horizontal shaft 2l: said crank carrying' a slide block 26, working in a groove 27 in the cross head. Loose on shaft A is a worm gear 30, meshing with a ivorm 31, the latter fixed on shaft 3, so that the worm wheel 3() is constantly rotating'. The ivorm ivheel 3() is connectible to shaft 24 to turn the same Whenever it is necessary to reciprocate the rack frame 13 to completi a computing operation; and at the conclusion of said reci procation, said ivorm ivheel 30 is autoimitically disconnected from the shaft Q44, and the latter comes to a stop, ivhile the motor 1 continues to rotate.
Fixed to the shaft 24: is a cup member 32v of a clutch; and fixed to the hub of worm gear 30 is a collar Running' on this` collar and adapted to engage the inside of a. cylindrical face of the clutch cup 32. is a gripping ball or roll 34; said roll occupying' a pocket 35 in the clutch cup. and rolling' on an inclined iioor 35 thereof. so that, rel ative movement of the clutch cup and collar 33 in one direction ivill cause said members to be clutched together b y the roll. while relative movement in the opposite direction Will produce the opposite effect. so as to permit independent rotation of the gear 3l).
The clutch roll is shiftablc between g'ripping' and releasing' positions in the pocket 35 by means of an annular disk or ring' 3h. which rides loosely on the collar 33 Within cup 3Q', and which is cut aivay at one place to receive the roll 3l, so as to engage. the roll on both sides thereof. Rotation of ring' 36, therefore, shifts the roll. Against said ring' 3G bears one end of a compression spring' 38, Which is confined yvithin a pocket 37 formed in said ring: the other end ot said spring` bearing' against: a stop 39 secured to the inner side of the clutch cup. The pocket 3T is of sufficient length to permit a movement of the disk or ring' 3G ivithout interference from the stop 39. The

spring tends to turn the ring 36 with the roll 34 in a direction to lock together the clutch cup with the bearing collar to cause shaft 24 to rotate with gear 30. In other words, said spring tends normally to close the clutch. Normally, however', said ring 36 is restrained from causing the roll to bind; or in other words, said ring is normally held in clutch-releasing position. For this purpose, there is provided a trip pin or latch 40, normally in engagement with a lug 41 provided upon releasing ring 36, said lug projecting through an opening in the clutch cup. Vhen shaft 24 is to be clutched to the gear 30, the latch 40 is raised to release lug 41, whereupon sp'rring 3S throws ring 36, together with roll 34, thus locking the clutch cup and the shaft 24 to the rotating worm gear 30. The pin 40 is automatically dropped again into the path of lug 41, so that at the completion of a single rotation of the shaft 24, the latter is again unclutched from the worm gear 30. The rack frame 13 is caused to reciprocate after the numeral keys of the typewriter have been operated to set up a number. This rack frame operates to turn the computing wheels to different extents, depending upon the key operated.
I will first describe means whereby the typist may depress a special key to operate said clutch, and cause the reciprocation of the rack frame or general operator. Said key is designated as 42, and is mounted on a stem 43, pivoted at its lower end to a lever 44, fulcrumed at 45 upon the machine frame. Said lever 44, in turn, depresses a cross lever 46, which is pivoted at 47 to the framework, and at its other end engages a notch 48 formed in the top of the trip pin or latch 40, so as to cause or control the up and down movement of said latch, whereby the clutch is caused to close and open. The lever 46 is provided with an adjustable end or arm 50, upon which the 'key lever 42 bears; this part 50 being adjust-able by screws 52, thereby securing accuracy of adjustment and movement of the clutch-controlling mechanism. Depression of the key 42 carries down the lever 44, the latter rocks the lever 46 about its fulcrum 45, the other end of the lever 46 lifting the latch 40 away from the clutch lever 41. The typist immediately releases the key 42, which is returned. to normal position by a spring 54. The movement of the key is limited by a pin 55 within a slot 56 in the key stem. The lever 46 has a returning spring 57.
The typewriter includes the usual set of type-operating keys, including alphabet keys and also including numeral keys 88 mounted on levers 88 and connected by bell cranks S9 to type bars 90, which are thrown back against a platen 91 mounted on a carriage 92. The carriage is power-driven, as
usual, and has a rack 87 meshing with a pinion S6, connected with an escapement wheel 85, the latter controlled by dogs S4, operated by a universal bar 83, which is actuated by the type bars, so that whenever any type key is actuated, the carriage 92 is caused to feed a letter space.
The universal bar 83 and the mechanism operated thereby may be termed the escapement mechanism, in that it permits the escapement of the carriage, and may be indicated generally by the reference numeral 85a. This escapement mechanism is utilized, aswill be described hereinafter, to prevent the operation of the typewriter when certain elements of the computing mechanism are not in their proper position to be operatcd.
Fastened at the back of the carriage 92, are brackets 93, carrying a rack 94, to receive adjustable cams or tappets 95. lVhenever any tappet, during the travel of the carriage, passes beneath the set of jacks 96, it raises the forward ends of the `iacks in succession, turning each on its pivot 97, and depressing its rear end to press down the corresponding on-e of a set of wires 98. These wires are connected at their lower ends to levers 99 on a fulcrum rod 100. Each lever 99 raises one of a set of linkages 101; each Ilinkage having a pin 102 to lift the rear end of a rack bar 103, the forward end of ywhich meshes with a pinion 104 connected to a computing wheel 105. Each rack bar carries a set of pins 106, and one of these is depressed by the operated type key 68; each key having a stem 110, for this purpose, to depress a crank 112, fast to a shaft 113, which is connected to a linkage 114, to depress one of the pins 106 upon the lifted rack bar 103; there being one linkage 114 for each key, each linkage being in position to depress a corresponding pin 106 on whichever rack oar is lifted. After the keys 8S are manipulated to write a number, and the corresponding racks 103 accordingly elevated as the papencarriage feeds along, and certain pins 106 thereon depressed, there must be caused a reciprocation of the rack frame or general operator 13. This .frame usually includes a pair of arms 115 connected by a transverse horizontal bar 116, which is in position to engage all the displaced pins 106, and to give corresponding forward endwise movements to their 1acks 10S, thereby turning the computing wheels 105 accordingly; the return movements of the racks not turning said wheels, however, because of a pawl-andratchet connection (not shown) between said wheels and their drive pinions 104. Pinions 116a meshing with racks 13, are also in mesh with segments 116b fixed on rock shaft 116C. The pins 106 and pin-bars form a set of indexing devices on which numbers are temporarily set up, and :trom which the numbers are carried into the computing wheels 105.

When the error key is released, a spring 13() returns it to normal position.
)is has been stated above, it is desirable to prcent the operation of the platen 91 until the errer key 120 has been actuated to clear the error 'from the computing' mechanism by unsettine the pins 10G. To this end, the platen is made somewhat different from the ordinary llnderwood platen, and, as will be seen bv reference to Fins. 6 to 10, includes a sha'lt 131 to which the platen roller 132 is secured. and which is provided at its lett and right ends with hubs or collars 133 and 131- sccured thereto, so as to move therewith, in any suitable manner, as by means of set screws 13:3. in this instance. the platen is provided with knobs 13G, A37 for the purpose ot rotating' the platen, but these knobs are not rigidly connected to the platen. r1`hat is to say, the knobs which form an actuating' means ttor rotating the platen are eonnectble at times through the intermediarv ot clutches` 133 and 139 to thc platen, so as to rotate the same. The clutch illustrated in this rase is ot' the ball and cam-cup type, as will be seen more clearly by reference t0 llie's. 3 to 10. rllhe hubs 133 and 13-1 are each provided with a cylindrical socket or cavity 110. in which extends an enlargement 1-l-1 provided on each ot the knobs. Each oi" these enlargements is provided with a pocket or cup 1li). which is deepest at one end and gradually tapers to the surface ot the enlai'einent, so as to torm a spiral cani on which a ball 1-1-3 may roll. This ball 143, in each case, is urged away trom the deepest portion ot' the cam by means of a spring` 1li, which, however, will yield when sul'licient torce is applied to permit the ball to recede in the deepest portion oi the cam cup. out ot clutching connection with the inner surlace ot the hubs 133 and 134i.. rllhe knobs 13G and 137 are otherwise loosely connected to the hubs 133 and 131, and thus to the platen by means ot screw shafts 145.
The only diilierence between the clutches 13S and 139 is that they are faced in opposite directions, so that they are capable ot rotating the platen in opposite directions, but are incapable ot rotatingthe platen in the other directions. rl`hat is to say, it the operator faces the machine and rotates the lett knob 13G up over toward himself, the ball will roll on the inclined surtace at the bottom ot' the cam cup and be clutched bctween this surface and the inner surface of the hub 133, so that it will be connected to the platen to rotate it in a counter-direction to that ot normal line-spacing. it, however, this knob 13G is rotated up over to the rear, the ball 113 will sink against the tension of the spring 111- into the deepest part ot the pocket 142, thus termine' no connection between the knob and the platen. @n the other hand, it the right hand knob 137 is rotated up over toward the rear, the knob 137 will be positively7 connected by the clutch 139, so as to tend to rotate the platen in a line-spacing direction, but a rotation ot the knob 137 in the opposite direction would permit it merely to run freely wit-hout operating' the platen. The rotation of the platen 91 by the right hand knob 137 in a linespacing direction is, however, prevented by a pawl 11G, which engages a ratchet wheel 117 and prevents the rotation ot the knob 37 on which the ratchet wheel is secured, thus forming a locking means preventingr the actuation ot the platen through the intermediary of the knob 137 tor the purpose ot correcting' an error. lt will thus be seen that the typist cannot rotate the platen by actuatingeither of the knobs 13G or 137 in a manner to bringthe work sheet up above the platen 'for the purpose ot erasing' an error just committed, until the lock embodying the pawl 1&6 and the ratchet wheel released. The release ot this lock is accomplished when the error key 120 is depressed to clear the computing mechanism ot theI error. For this purpose, there is loosely mounted on the hub 133 and the knob 137, a. bail 118,- which is provided with a tripping pin 119 located on one ot the arms et the bail, so as to remove the pawl lLl-G from engagement with the ratchet wheel 117.
The bail 11S may be operated by a link 150, which is connected at its lower end to a bell crank lever 151, the tai-ther arm ot which is connected by a link 1.52 to a bell crank lever 153 having one arm underlying' the end ot the stem et the error key 120. rlhis last bell crank lever 153 may be returned to its normal position by means of a spring` 15-1. The extent ot movement ot the bail 11S and the linkages connected thereto may be controlled by a pin 155, which, as will lbe seen by reference to Fig. L1, is secured to a suitable portion oit the trame and engages a slot 156 oit predetermined magnitude provided in the link 150.
inasmuch as it is desired to relieve the operator of the necessity of holding the error key 120 depressed, while adjusting the platen and while erasing the error on the work sheet on the platen, there is provided a loc-k for the error key, which in this instance is shown to embody a latch 157 adapted to engage notch 158 formed in a catch 159 provided on the stem of the error key 1.20. This latch can be readily released by swinging it about its pivot. It might sometimes happen that the typist, after correcting the error on the work sheet, would return the work sheet to its original position and start a. further computation, without thinking to release the lock for the error key, and thus have an inaccurate operation of the machine. To avoid this, the link 150 is provided with an obstructing member or stop 160, which, while normally located in an unobstructing.,position, is depressed, with the actuation of the error key, to such a position that it will interfere with the operation of the escapement mechanism 85, and thus by virtue of the universal bar 83 forming ay part of the escapement mechanism lyin the path of the type bars 90, will prevent the complete throw of said type bars, and thus lock the keys 88 against complete movement. As soon as the error key 120 is permitted to return to its normal position, the stop 1.60 will be raised out of alinemcnt with the escapement mechanism permitting the carriage, the type keys and the mechanism connected thereto to be once more brought into operation.
I have thus farshown how a certain portion of the typewriting mechanism, to wit: the platen, is controlled in its operation from a certain portion of the computing mechanism.v to wit: the error key. It now remains to show how the actuation of the platen, and the carriage on which the platen is located, controls the operation of the computing mechanism byl enabling the normally disconnected motor to be connected to the general operator of the computing mecha.- nism by the automatic clutch. This is accomplished by lifting the latch 40 away from the clutch lug 41 by means, other than the key 42, which is controlled from the typcwriting mechanism. If we refer once more to Figs. 6 and 8 and also to Fig. 1, it will be seen that the hub 133, which is secured to the shaft 131, and thus to the platen 91, is provided with a line-space ratchet wheel 161 of the usual Underwood type, which is engaged by a spring-pressed pawl 162 on a slide bar 163. This slide bar is normally held by a spring 164 in such a position that'it can be forced rearwardly by means of the usual line-space lever 165, which is pivotally mounted on the carriage 92 in such manner that it can be used not only to rotate the platen 91, but also to return the carria ge to its starting point after a movement in a letter feeding direction. The slide bar 163 is provided with a pair of pins 165 and 166, which are adapted to oscillate a. bell crank lever 167 having one of its arms projecting between them. The other' arm of the bell crank lever 167 engages an arm 16S forming a part of a bell crank lever 169, the other arm of which is formed by a bail 170. The bail, when depressed by the rearward movement of the slide bar 163, will engage the turned over flange 171 on a link 172, and thus rock a lever 173 connected by a link 174 to a hell crank lever 175, which rests on the latch lever 46 on the opposite side of its fulcrum from the latch 40, so that when the line-space lever 165, is operated, it will at the same time remove the latch pin 40 from the path of the clutch lug 41., permitting the clutch to operatively connect the motor in driving relation with the general operator.
The link 172 may be guided and limited in its motion by a pin 176 engaging a slot 177 provided therein. This mechanism may he returned to its normal position by means of a spring 17S, which is shown as connected to the bell crank lever 175.
In the operation of the device, the typist strikes the keys 88 so as to concomitantly print the numerals to be computed on the work sheet on the platen 91, and at the same time set up the pins 106, so as to index the numbers, for the purpose of subsequently carrying them to the computing wheels 105. lVe will assume that the typist has made an error and desires to correct the same. It will be seen that if the typist endeavors to rotate the platen 01 so as to bring the work e sheet to a position such that the error will lie above the platen where it can be conveniently erased, by rotating the left knob 136, this knob will rotate freely without turning the platen in the direction desired. It will be further seen that it is impossible to rotate the other knob 137, inasmuch as this knob is locked by the paw] 146. It is therefore necessary that the typist must first clear the computing mechanism of the error by depressing the error key 120. A depression of the error key-120 will raise the clearing plate so as to unset the pins 106, returning` them to their normal positions. When the error key 120 is depressed, it will be automatically locked in its depressed position by the latch pawl 157, so that the operator will have both hands free to turn the platen 91 up to the desired position by rotating the right hand knob 137, which has in the meantime been released by the pin 140, tripping the pawl 146 when the error key 120 was depressed to clear the computing mechanism of the error. lVhile the platen cannot be turned back to bring the work sheet to the proper position to receive the correction by turning the right hand knob CII Gti

l. The combination with a typewriting mechanism including a platen, ot computing mechanism including an error key tor clearing the computing mechanism of an erroneous portion ot a calculation, and means brought in play by said error key for enabling the actuation ot said platen.

The combination with typewriting mechanism including a platen7 a knob for rotating said platen, a one-way clutch for connecting said knob to said platen, and a lock tor preventing the rotation ot said platen by said knob. ol" computingmechanism including a key tor manipulating certain parts ot' said computing mechanism, and connections between said key and said lock, whereby said key can release said lock to permit the rotation ot said platen by said knob.
ll. rllhe combination with a typewriting mechanism including a platen, a knob for said platen, a ball and cup clutch connecting said knob to said platen, so that said knob will be capable of rotatin said platen solely in one direction, a second knob for said platen, a clutch for said second knob, and a.
lock tor preventing the rotation of said second knob, of computing mechanism including a key for operating certain parts of said computing mechanism, and connections A between said key and said lock, whereby said lock may be released by said key, to permit the rotation of said platen by said second knob.

The combination with a typewriting mechanism including a platen, a knob, a clutch for connecting said knob to said platen, so that said clutch can rotate said platen solely in one direction, a second knob, a second clutch for connecting said second knob to said platen so that said second knob can rotate said platen solely in the opposite direction to that in which said first mentioned knob can rotate said platen, and a lock for preventing the rotation of said platen by one of said knobs, of computing mechanism including a key for operating certain parts ot said computing mechanism, and connections between said key and said lock, whereby said lock may be released concoinitantly with the actuation of said certain parts of said computing mechanism by said key.

In a combined typewriting and computing machine the combination with typewriting mechanism including a platen and means for rotating said platen, of computing mechanism, operating means for said computing mechanism, and connections between said platen-rotating means and said operating means, whereby said platen-rd tating means may control the actuation of said operating means.

The combination with a typewriting mechanism including a platen, and means tor rotating said platen, o-' computing mechanism including a general operator tor said computing mechanism, a motor .normally disconnected from said operator, and means governed by said first-mentioned traversing means Yfor controlling the operative connection of said general operator with said motor.
15. rlhe combination with a typewriting mechanism including a carriage, of means tor line spacing and traversing said carriage, computing mechanism including a general operator for obtaining a cycle of operations ot said computing mechanism, and connections between said line spacing and traversing means and said computing mechanism, whereby the actuation of' the former to traverse said carriage will cause a concomitant actuation of the latter'.
1G, The combination with a typewriting mechanism including a platen and means for rotating said platen, of computing mechanism including a general operator for said computing mechanism, a motor normally disconnected from said operator, mechanism for connecting said general operator with said motor, and means controlled by said platen-rotating means enabling the concomitant effective connection of said general operator to said motor with a rotation of said platen.

The combination with a carriage, of means for line spacing and returning said carriage, computing mechanism including a general operator for giving a complete cycle of movements thereof, a motor normally disconnected from said operator, mechanism for connecting said general operator with said motor, and means controlled by said line spacing and carriage returning means enabling the concomitant e'l'liective connection of said general operator to said motor with the return of said carriage.

The combination with typewriting mechanism including a carriage, escapcment mechanism for said carriage, and a platen on said carriage, of computing mechanism including a special key, means enabling the control of said platen by said key, and a stop operated by said means for preventing the actuation of said escapement mechanism while said key is in its actuated position.

The combination with a typewriter platen, of computing mechanism including an error key for clearing the computing mechanism of an erroneous computation, and means for preventing erasure of an error on a work sheet on said platen until said error key has been actuated to clear the error from said computing mechanism.

The combination with a typewriter platen, of typewriting mechanism coperating with said platen to write on a work sheet on said platen, means for preventing the erasure of an error from the work sheet on said platen, computing mechanism including an error key for clearing'an erroneous computation from said computing mechanism, and connections between said error key and said iirst-mentioned means, whereby the operation of correcting an error on said work sheet can be controlled from said error key.

The combination with a typewriter platen, ot typewriting mechanism coperat` ing with said platen to write on a work sheet on said platen, means for preventing the erasure of an error from the work sheet on said platen, computing mechanism including an error key for clearing an erroneous computation from said computing mechanism, Aconnections between said error key and said irst-mentioned means, whereby the operation of correcting an error on said work sheet can be controlled from said error key, and a stop for preventing the actuation ot said typewriting` mechanism while said error key is in its actuated position.

In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination with a rotatable platen, of means for rotating it in one direction only to thereby position a work-sheet where an error thereon may be corrected, a pawl normally effective to prevent operation of such means, releasing means for said pawl, and a latch for holding said pawl in released position.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of a normally inoperable manual device whereby the platen may be rotated in the operation of correcting an error, computing mechanism including a set of key-controlled indexing devices, means including an Aerror key for restoring said indexing devices to enable an error to be corrected, and means set by said error key to permit the rotation of the platen by said manual device.

The combination with a typewriting mechanism including a platen, and means for rotating the same, of computing mechanism including a general operator, a motor normally ineffective to drive said general operator, and automatic means controlled from said platen-rotating means for causing the concomitant driving of said general operator by said motor with a rotation of said platen.

In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination, with a traveling carriage, and an'escapement for controlling the travel of said carriage including a universal bar; of devices for temporarily indexing or setting up the numbers to be computed; numeral keys for setting said indexing devices, said keys also arranged to cooperate with said universal bar in actuating said escapement; universal restoring means for the set indexing devices; and a member connected to be moved by said restoring means into the path of said universal bar, so as to obstruct the operation of said keys while said restoring means is in action.
40. The combination with a typewriting mechanism including a carriage, a platen, and a line-space mechanism for said platen, of a trip located in the path of a certain moving part of said line-space mechanism, a computing mechanism including a general operator, enabling means causing the actuation of said general operator, and universal connections between said trip and said enabling means, whereby the movement of said trip can be caused to bring about the actuation of said enabling means at any point in the movement of said carriage.
41. The combination with a typewriting mechanism, including a platen, a traveling carriage, and a line-space lever for said car'- riage, of a computing mechanism, including a general operator and means for actuating said general operator, and a one-way effective connection lying in the path of said line-space lever acting to control the drive of said general operator by said actuating means.
