Be it known that 1, CHARLES O. Dawson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chetopa, in the county of Labette and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steam-Condensers, Reboilers, and Skimmers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to steam condensers, reboilers and skimmers, the broad object of the invention being to combine in one apparatus, means for condensing the steam, reboiling the distilled water of condensation and separating therefrom oil and other impurities which rise to the surface of the water, thereby doing away with the use of three separate units for the purpose of producing distilled water for various purposes.
A further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the character above referred to by means of which the exhaust steam from an engine may be used instead of live steam direct from the boiler. The construction hereinafter described also keeps the apparatus free from scale, and reduces the amount of condensing water used.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section illus trating the apparatus of this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section through the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the condenser partly broken away to illustrate the skimming trap. Fig. ais a section on the line at-l of Fig. 1 showing the other head of the condenser in elevation.
Referring to the drawings A generally designates a hollow body forming the main element of the condenser, said body comprising the pear-shaped heads 1 and the main wall 2 which is secured by a tight joint to the heads 1 thereby forming a condensing chamber which is pear-shaped in cross section or which embodies upwardly converging side walls against which the exhaust steam is projected, the said walls being kept in a comparatively cool condition by means of a water distributing pipe 3 extending along the top and lengthwise of the condensing chamber and being formed with slots 4 to permit the water to trickle down the opposite sides of the condenser, the pipe 3 being provided at a suitable point with a funnel 5 into which water is discharged from a suitable water supply pipe 6 controlled by a stop cock 7 8 designates an exhaust steam pipe from an engine, the same being provided with an elbow at 9 to which is connected a steam distributing pipe 10. The pipe'lO extends through a flanged opening 11 in the adjacent head of the condenser and along the lower portion of the condenser, terminating in a closed extremity 12 at any suitable distance from the opposite head of the condenser. Projecting from opposite sides of the steam pipe 10 are two series of steam nozzles 13, said nozzles projecting upwardly to a point above the normal water level in the condenser where they discharge the steam against the cool walls of the condenser, the water of condensation flowing down the inner sides of the condenser until the steam pipe 10 is submerged in the water of condensation as also portions of the exhaust nozzles 13. The steam contained in the pipe 10 and nozzles 13 thus reboils the water of condensation which finally passes out through a distilled water outlet pipe 14 leading to any suitable type of cooler (not shown).
At the rear end of the hollow bodyor condenser 2 I arrange a substantially semi-circular compartment 15 forming a skimming trap the top edge of which is approximately on a level with the normal water line of the condenser, the said edge being serrated or scalloped as shown at 16 to allow oil and other impurities on the surface of the water in the condenser to be carried into said trap. An outlet pipe 17 extends from the bottom of the trap 15 downwardly and enters the lower end of a skimming jack cylinder 18 in which there is arranged a reciprocatory piston 19 adapted to be moved upwardly in the cylinder 18 as scum received from the chamber 15 fills the lower end of the cylinder 18. Connected to the piston 19 and extending upwardly through the open end of the cylinder 18 is a piston rod 20 the upper extremity of which is adapted to come into contact with the stem 21 of a valve 22 controlling a valve seat 23 and thereby controlling the discharge of distilled water from the pipe 14 and therctore from the condenser.
In the bottom of the cylinder 18 is ar ranged a scum outlet valve 24 the downwardly extending stem of which is connected with a valve operating lever 26 fulcrumed at one end on a bracket 27 shown as connected to the cylinder head and cooperating at its opposite or free end with upper and lower shoulders 28 and 29, respectively, on a stem or rod 30 which is fixedly secured at the point 31 to the piston rod 20.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will now be understood that the exhaust steam from an engine is utilized to distil the water in the condenser, said steam passing along the distributing pipe 10 and outwardly through the exhaust nozzles 13 at opposite sides of the pipe 10. The steam is thus projected against the cooled walls of the condenser and trickles downwardly into the bottom of the condenser until the level of water reaches to the serrated edge 16 of the skimming trap 15. The oil and other impurities thus find their way into the skimming trap 15 and finally into the jack cylinder 18 and when the piston 16 is raised by the accumulation of the scum, the valve 22 is opened so that a certain proportion of distilled water may be carried to the cooler through the pipe 1st. \V hen the rod 22 has reached a certain elevation, the shoulder 29 acts on the lever 26 to open the valve 24, allowing the scum to pass outwardly through the pipe 32, at the same time permitting the piston 19 to descend. The valve 22 then cuts oil further discharge of distilled water from the condenser while the shoulder 28 striking against the lever 26 insures the tight closing of the valve 2st. The steam in the pipe 10 and exhaust nozzles 13 maintain the water of condensation in a boiling condition.
What I claim is 1. The combination of a hollow condenser body, an engine exhaust steam pipe enter-- ing said body and extending along the bot-- tom portion thereof and terminating in a closed extremity, exhaust nozzles project-- ing from said steam pipe at intervals within said body and extending upwardly above the Water level, a distilled Water outlet pipe leading from the bottom of the body, a skimming trap having its receiving orifice on a level with the maximum water level in the condenser body, a valve controlling said outlet pipe, and means controlled by the scum for intermittently opening and closing said valve.
2. The combination of a hollow condenser body, an engine exhaust steam pipe entering said body and extending along the bottom portion thereof and terminating in a closed extremity, exhaust nozzles projecting from said steam pipe at intervals within said body and extending upwardly above the water level, a distilled water outlet pipe leading from the bottom of the body, a skimming trap having its receiving orifice on a level with the maximum water level in the condenser body, a valve controlling said outlet pipe, a cylinder arranged to receive the scum from said trap, a piston in said cylinder, and a piston rod arranged to lift said valve from its seat.
8. The combination of a hollow condenser body, an engine exhaust steam pipe entering said body and extending along the bottom portion thereof and terminating in a closed extremity, exhaust nozzles projecting from opposite sides of said steam pipe at intervals within said body and extending upwardly above the water level, a distilled water outlet pipe leading from the bottom of the body, a skimming trap having its receiving orifice on a level with the maximum water level in the condenser body, a valve controlling said outlet pipe, and means controlled by the scum for intermittently opening and closing said valve.
4:. The combination of a hollow condenser body, an engine exhaust steam pipe entering said body and extending along the bottom portion thereof and terminating in a closed extremity, exhaust nozzles projecting' from said steam pipe at intervals within said body and extending upwardly above the water level, a distilled water outlet pipe leading from the bottom of the body, a skimming trap having a serrated edge bor dering its receiving orifice on a level with the maximum water level in the condenser body, a valve controlling said outlet pipe, and means controlled by the scum for in termittently opening and closing said valve.
5. The combination of a hollow condenser body, an engine exhaust steam pipe entering said body and extending along the bottom portion thereof and terminating in a closed extremity, exhaust nozzles projecting from said steam pipe at intervals within said body and extending upwardly above the water level, a distilled water outlet pipe leading from the bottom of the body, a skimming trap having its receiving orifice on a level with the maximum water level in the condenser body, a valve controlling said outlet pipe, a cylinder arranged to receive the scum from said trap, a piston in said cylinder, a piston rod arranged to lift said valve from its seat, an outlet valve for said cylinder, and means controlled by said pisten for opening and closing the last named valve.
