Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OHN F. KELLY, a citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vitreous-China Shower-Heads, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to the construction of shower heads used to spray the water in shower baths. I

The main object of the invention is to provide a more sanitary and durable shower head than those heretofore on the market. To this end the shower head per se is made entirely of porcelain or vitreous china and is all in one piece. Heretofore the perforated outlet plate or face of the shower head has been made separately and secured to the metal funnel-shaped body portion by crimping or other joining means. This entails numerous operations as well as presenting many difficulties in properly securing the parts especially if the outlet plate be made of porcelain or china instead of metal.

When the shower head is made of metal the waters in certain localities attack the metal and corrode it and gradually eat it away. By this invention the shower head per se being made entirely of porcelain, vitreous china or other similar earthy material is not affected by any kind of water and being all in one piece does not tend to be come leaky nor provide cracks for the scoretion of water.

Also by providing a porcelain head the fixture is greatly enhanced in beauty and utility especially from a sanitary standpoint as it is not in any manner attacked or affected by vapors or corrosion on the outside and for this reason it is becoming more and more the practice and the requirement to dispense with metal in bath room fittings.

It will be understood that where the term porcelain is used herein it includes and covers any similar earthy material such as commonly used in making sanitary toilet articles.

To these ends the invention consists in the improved construction of shower heads and in the combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described and then specified in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a vertical transverse section through a shower ner. .The large end of the funnel-shaped body is provided with a porcelain plate 2 provided with a plurality of perforations 3 disposed about its face in any desired arrangement. The plate 2 is formed integrally with the body 1 and the whole provided with a glaze and fired in the usual manner well known to those skilled in the pottery art. The plate 2 constitutes the usual perforated spraying outlet through which the water from the source of supply passes. The small end of the funnel-shaped body 1 is provided with an inwardly projecting annular porcelain flange 4 integral with the body. Beneath the flange 4 is an integral lug or stop 5 projecting inwardly from the inner wall of the body. The flange 4 is provided with two diametrically opposed openings or slots 6.

7 indicates a threaded nipple provided at one end with two radially projecting lugs 8 diametrically opposite each other and adapted to enter the openings 6 in the flange 4. After entering the slots 6 the nipple is rotated so that the lugs 8 face against a solid part of the flange 4, the nipple being secured to the flange and therefore to the body 1 by a nut 9.

10 indicates a washer of suitable compressible material inserted between the face of the flange 4 and the nut 9 to prevent leakage in the connection between the metal and porcelain parts.

In securing the nipple 7 to the shower head by the nut 9, any tendency of the nipple to rotate with the nut in tightening is prevented by one of the lugs 8 coming into engagement with the stop 5.

11 indicates a pipe running from the source of water supply and -to which the nipple 7 is connected in any desirable and suitable manner as by an elbow 12 or otherwise.

13 indicates a vent for the admission of air to the shower head after the water is turned off to enable the water to quickly drain therefrom and prevent it from continuing to drip. In the present construction the vent 13 is provided with a protecting hood 14 open at the bottom and integral at the top and sides with the body 1. The hood 14 serves to conceal the vent and prevent any water which might escape therefrom from being discharged laterally.

It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the shape of head shown nor to the coupling means for the same eX- cept as may be specified in the appended claims. a,

What I claim as my invention is l. A shower head comprising a porcelain funnel-shaped one-piece body and perforated outlet plate, said body being provided with a vent opening through the wall thereof and an integral hood for said vent merging into the surface of the body at the top and sides but open at the bottom.

2. A shower head comprising a porcelain one-piece body and perforated outlet plate, said body being funnel-shaped and provided with an opening through the side wall forming a vent, an integral hood open at the bottom and adapted to conceal said vent and coupling means secured to said body.
