Specification oftLetter s latent. Patented Aug, 22 11916,
Application filed October 6, 1918, Serial No. 798,635. Renewed June 6, 1916. Serial No. 102,091.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED VAN GALE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wardrobe- Trunks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wardrobe trunks and it relates particularly to a folding hanger support for the individual garment hangers in such wardrobe trunks. l
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved garment hanger support for wardrobe trunks, which is simple in construction, strong and durable and firmly supports the hangers at both ends when the hangers are folded into the trunk and firmly holds said support throughout the length when folded into the trunk and holds the support at both ends when the support and the hangers are swung outward from the Wardrobe trunk, thus taking the strain 0H the pivots of the several parts and affording a firm and rigid support for all the various positions of the several parts.
In the accompanying drawings in which like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures: Figure 1 is a front elevation of an upper part of wardrobe trunk provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 1s a horizontal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view on a large scale on the line .22 m of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the clip on the top of the trunk. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the hook on the swinging bracket.
The body of the Wardrobe trunk 1 made in any conventional construction has the two sides 2 and a top 3. To the inner surface of one side 2 a metal channel bar 4 is secured parallel with the top of the trunk, atsaid web having a flange :10, at the bottom, said angleshaped pivoted bracket fitting in between the flanges' 5 of the channel bar 4. From the flange 5 of the bracket 6 a series of. equally spaced pins 11 project upward, their upper ends being no higher than the top flange of the channel bar 4; so that said upper ends of said Pins are beneath the underslde .of the top flange of the channel bar 4. A series of garment hangers 12 are each providedat the inner end with a vertical eye or socket 13 of such size and diameter as to fit in snugly on one of the pins 11 and when mounted on said pins being adapted to swing on the same. The garment hangers are preferably each formed of two strips 14 of wood or sheet metal having their ends secured to a part made integral with the eye 13. If desired the two strips 14 may be provided with a locking latch 15 of any approved construction, at their free ends to permit of locking them together after a garment has been placed between them and if desired a suspending eye or hook 16 may be attached to one or both strips 14 of each hanger about mid-way of the length of the same. At the free end of the swinging bracket 6 an L-shaped piece 17 is riveted to the web of the bracket at the inner side and from said piece 17 an L-sliaped hook 18 projects upwar the upper horizontal member 19 of which extends in the direction of the length of the bracket and projects be-- yond the free end of the same in a plane above that of the upper edge of the bracket. When the bracket is swung outward so as to be substantially parallel with the open front of the wardrobe trunk the horizontal part 19 of the hook 18 rests upon the horizontal part 20 of an angle clip 21 which by means of its horizontal flange 22 is secured to the underside of the top 3 of the wardrobe body. To prevent swinging the bracket outward too far a stop 23 is formed at the free end of the clip 21 and to facilitate the upper member 19 of the hook 18 sliding swung outward so that its hook 18 rests u on be lifted off the pins and can be replaced by others. After required changes in garments or hangers have been made and the latter replaced on the swinging bracket 6 the latter is swung back into the trunk so that it now rests upon the bottom flange of the channel bar 4;. As the bracket 6 is swung inward into the wardrobe trunk body the garment hangers also swing inward and their free ends arrive and rest upon the bottom horizontal flange 25 of an angle bar 26 secured to the inner surface of that side wall 2 opposite the one to which the channel bar 4 i secured. The angle bar 26 is secured at such an elevation that when the bracket and garment hangers are swung inward the free ends of the garment hangers can be supported by the horizontal flange of the an 1e bar.
The garment hangers are made of a length somewhat less than the inner transverse d1- mension of the wardrobe trunk so that when one end of each garment hanger is supported upon a pin 11 and on the bottom flange of the bracket 6 the opposite end will rest upon the bottom flange of the angle bar 26 so that the weight of the garments can not exert any bending or twisting strains on the supporting pins 11 or on the bracket or on the eyes of the garment hangers shpped upon said pins 11. As the garment hangers are swung outward and arrive at the front of the trunk they slide oil the flange of the angle bar and at the time that the bracket is swung outward completely its free end 1s supported by the hook 18 from the cllp 21 at the top end part of the trunk. The supporting pivots are thus not sub ected to any jars or jolts produced by the weight of the garments on the hangers and the parts thus can not only be made lighter but will not be so apt to be damaged by use.
-Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a trunk body, of 'a channel bar secured to the inner face of one side of the trunk, at the top, the flanges of said channel bar projecting horizontallv toward the interior of the trunk, a bracket hinged to the front endof said channel bar to fold within the channel bar, detachable garment hangers supported by said bracket, a supporting clip on the underside of the-top of the trunk at the outer edge and a hook on said bracket adapted to engage said clip, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a trunk body, of a channel bar secured'to the inner face of one side of the trunk at the top, the flanges of said channel bar projecting horizontally toward the interior of the trunk, a bracket hinged -to the front end of said channel bar to fold within the-channel bar, detachable garment hangers supported by said bracket, an angle bar bracket fixed to'the inner face of that side wall opposite the one to which the channel bar is attached to form a sup garment hangport for the free ends of the ers when folded within the tially as set forth.
3. The combinationwith a trunk body, of a channel bar securedto the inner face of one side of the trunk, at the top, a bracket hinged to the front end of said channel bar trunk, substan to fold within the channel bar, detachable garment hangers supported by said bracket,
a supporting clip on the underside of the top of thetrunk having a horizontal porto fold within the channel bar, detachable garment hangers supported by saidbracket, a clip secured to the underside of the top of the trunk and provided with a horizontal portion, a hook on the free end of the bracket which hook has a horizontal top por tion extending in the direction from the hinged end to the free end of the bracket and beyond said free end of the bracket and adapted to slide uponthe said clip, substantially as set forth.
5. Thecombination with a trunk body, of a channel bar secured to the inner face of one side of the trunk body at the top, thev flanges of said channel bar projecting hOI'i? zontally' toward the interior of the trunk, an angle bar bracket pivoted to the front end of said channel bar to fold within said channel bar and pins proj'ectinglupward from the flange of said bracket adjacent to the upright member of said angle bar bracket and detachable garment hangers on said pins, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination with a trunk body, of a channel bar secured to the inner face of one side of the trunk body at the top, a pivoted pin secured in the top and bottom flanges of the channel bar, an angle iron bracket fitting between the flanges of the channel bar and having part of its web shaped inte an eye at one end of the bracket, and State of New Jersey this 25th day of said eye being formed around the said men- September, A. D. 1913. tiened pivot pin, a series of pins projecting upward from the flange of said angle iron v ALFRED VAN GALE 5 bracket and detachable garment hangers on Witnesses:
said pins, substantially as set forth. OSCAR F. GUNZ,
