Description

GEORGE B. RANSOM y Improvement in Sash Holders. I
No. 119,534, v Patented on, 3, 187].
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. RANSOM, OF CHESTER, CONNECTICUT, A SSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JAMES B. CLARK, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,534, dated October 3, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. RANSOM, of Chester, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Sash-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents, in-
Figure 1, an inside view of a window with the fastener attached; Fig 2, an enlarged front and partial sectional view of the fastener detached; and in Fig. 3, a vertical section on line 00 00.
This invention relates to an improvement in sash-holders, designed with especial reference to car-windows, the object being to support the window at any fixed point, and combined with such fastener a handle for lifting the sash, and it consists in the arrangement of a locking-bar, which has a combined vertical and longitudinal movement in consequence of an inclined bearing, so that the weight of the sash tends to retain the holder in a position to support the sash; also in combining with a sash-holder of the above construction a handle, by means of which the sash may be raised.
A is the locking-bar, the nose 0. of which is constructed to set into a notch in the windowjamb, and with a slot, d, inclined, by which slot the holder is secured by means of a screw, 13, or similar device passing through the said slot. The opposite or tail end of the said bar is arranged in a fixed bearing, here represented as D, and more fully hereinafter described. The tendency of the inclined slot (1 is that when the bar is drawn away from the sash it will also be drawn down, as denoted in broken lines, Fig. 2; consequently when thrown out, as in Figs. 1 and 2, the weight of the sash, resting upon the lower portion of the slot, prevents the withdrawal of the bar until the sash shall be raised so far that the bolt will, in drawing back, clear the notch. I have represented this construction as a simple bar secured directly to the sash; but it will be evident to those skilled in this class of manufacture that it may be attached to a plate and the plate secured to the sash. This bar I extend to a hook or other device, D, which I construct so as to afiord a convenient means for raising the sash, and the end of the bar inserted into a chamber, F, a spring within the said chamber forcing the bar outward, causing it to automatically engage in the notches on the jamb. On the said bar on the lifter I make aprojection', L, by means of which the bar may be withdrawn from its connection with the jamb, and this may be done by the thumb of the hand which is used to grasp the lifter; and this construction is a greater convenience, because it is necessary that the sash be raised slightly before the locking-bar can be withdrawn. The same result may be accomplished by constructing the bar as seen in Fig.
4, with a longitudinal slot, 61, so that the longitudinal movement of the bar is horizontal only, and constructing the nose of the bolt of a hookform or beveled upon the under side, as seen in Fig. 4. This requires the raising of the sash in order. to release the bar, substantially the same as the inclined slot and straight nose.
I claim as my invention The locking-bar A arranged upon the sash, and having one end supported at a fixed point, and the bar constructed and combined with one or more notches in the jamb, the movement of the said bar being by means of slots or equivalent devices made both longitudinal and vertical in the disconnection'of the bar from the notch 011 the jamb, substantially as set forth.
GEORGE E. RANSOM.
