MACHINE FOR COATNG FABRICS.
Application led April 27, 1914, Serial No. 834,696. Renewed June 26, 1916.
To all whom if may concern.'
Be it known that we, JOHN F. W'iirin and LABRON B. Ross, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Coating Fabrics, of which the following is a specication.
In the coatin of fabrics on one side with an asphaltic residuum from crude petroleum or analogous material as in the case of cloth from which cement bags and the like are to be made, it is important that, while the coating shall be so uniformly applied and to an extent suiiicient to fill the interstices of the fabric, yet 'the same must not show through on the opposite side but leave the saine white as a print-ing background. The degree of pcrmeation is subject to variation under conditions of the coating material such as temperature, fluidity, composition, etc. 1t therefore becomes necessary to so control the uxing of the materials as to secure uniformity of composition and to provide for a nicety of adjustment of the coating rolls, Scrapers, fabric tension, and speed of application, all under the control of the operator, whereby to apply the exact amount of coating material under proper conditions.
It is the object of the present invention then totprovide a machine for accomplishing these results in a most convenient and efficient manner.
ln order that the invention and the manner of its operation may be readily understood by those .skilled in the art a preferred embodiment of the same is set forth in the accompanying drawings and in the subjoined description predicated thereon. As, however, the invention is capable of embodiment in other and varied constructioiial forms the drawings and description are to be taken in an illustrative and not in an unnecessarily limiting sense.
1n the drawing-Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through a machine constitutinga preferred embodiment of the invention, said section being taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 4:; Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical transverse sections looking in opposite directions respectively from the line 2-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4C is a top plan View from a position below the upper guide rolls; and

Serial No. 106,060.
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of a modified device for controlling the level of the liquid.
As illustrated the tank indicated generally at 1 1 is shown as divided by the partition 12 into a iuXing compartment 13 and a coating compartment 14, these two compartments communicating by means of two passages through the lower portion of the partition 12, said passages being controlled by quick acting valves 15, 15 of well known construction and requiring no detailed illustration or description other than the fact that their valve stems 16, 16 are connected by .means of links 17, 17 to a unitary iioat device consisting of a cylinder 18 adapted to fioat upon the liquid within the coating compartment.- The two compartments of the tank are adapted to be heated in any suitable maiiner, heating pipes being indicated generally at 19 as extending beneath the bottom of the two compartments.
Within the coating compartment 14: is mounted to rotate a coating roll 20 upon a shaft 21 so disposed that the coating roll will dip below the level of the coating composition and thus carry upward upon its peripheral surface the composition adhering thereto. A rock shaft 22 is mounted adjacent to the coating roll 20 and extends transversely of the compartments parallel to the aXiS of said roll. rThis rock shaft has eccentrically mounted thereon an angle bar 23 provided with a knife like scraping edge 24 so disposed that upon the angular adjustnient of the shaft 22 the arc described by the knife edge 24 will intersect the peripheral arc of the coating roll 20. The end of the rock shaft 22 is equipped with a latch 26 engaging a notched segment 27 whereby the rock shaft may be angularly adjusted and maintained in adjusted position to control the relation between the knife edge of the scraper and the periphery of the roll so as to regulate the amount of liquid adhering to the surface* of the roll.
Upon the upper edge of thc tank and at one side of the coating roll 20 is mounted in stationary bearings a guide roll 28 and upon the opposite side of the coating roll is mounted a guide roll 29 in a bracket 30 carried by a frame 31 pivotcd at 32 to the side walls of the tank. This frame is adjustable Avertically by means of an eccentric. 33, the
strap 34 of which is connected at 35 to the bracket or frame. The eccentric is angu larly adjustable upon the shaft 36 by meansl of a hand wheel 37 under the control of the operator.
An angle bar 38 is mounted upon the freecupies a position slightly above the lower edge of the guide roll 29.
In suitable uprights 42 is journaled a split take-up reel 43 having a diagonally extending slot 44, the sha-ft of said reel being provided with a hand wheel 45 by which the said reel maybe rotated. Tension rods 46 are disposed below the take-up reel 43 in staggeredrelation while the guide roll 47 is mounted in fixed bearings 'above said reel.
' The fabric to be coated is indicated at 48 and may be of any suitable material such for instance 'as cloth. The fabric is supplied from any suitable source such as a drum, or a bolt of the fabric may rest upon the fioor adjacent the tank whence it is led through the slot of the winding reel 43, about the tension rods 46, beneath the guide roll 28, over the surface of the coating roll 20, in contact with the scraping edge 41 beneath the adjustable guide roll 29, above the guide roll 47, and thence by way of suitable drying, calendering, dusting or other mechanism, not shown, to a point of utilization or storage, the fabric being drawn forward by power applied in any suitable manner as for instance by a winding drum, not shown. As the fabric is drawn forward, the resistance afforded by the reel 43 and the tension rods 46 maintain the same under considerable tension.' By the adjustment of the eccentric 33 to the position illustrated the guide roll 29 is lowered until the fabric 48 is drawn over and in contact with the periphery of the coating roll 20, the direction c of travel of the fabric and of the coating roll being opposed one to the other. The amount of composition adhering to the surface of the coating roll being regulated by the scraping edge 24 the under side of the fabric is coated with the composition, any surplus amount being removed by the scraping edge 41. As the coated fabric continues around the guide rolls 29 and 47 the uncoated side thereof only comes in contact with the guiding means and the coated side is maintained out of contact with any part of the mechanism until it shall have become thoroughly dry.
In the coating. of fabrics of different weight or of different texture it is necessary to employ a coating composition at a temaaai-"asie perature and of a degree of fluidity best adapted to the particular fabric and it vis important that the fluxing of the material shall be carried on in such manner and that the material shall be supplied to the coating compartment in such a way as to maintain its qualities uniform. To this end it is desirable to preliminarily heat and mix the composition in a compartment separate and apart from the' coating tank, the capacity of the fluxing tank being such as to accommodate a large quantity of the material, per-4 mitting additional barrels of the material to be added thereto from time to time for heating and mixing in order to have the material uniform as to consistency, composition and temperature before it is admitted to the coating compartment. It is important also to maintain the liquid within the coating compartment at a substantially uniform level slightly below the axis of the coating roll and above the lower edge of said roll` The float device 18 is so coupled by means of the links 17 to the valve stems 16 that upon the sinking of the liquid level the valves will open to 'supply additional liquid and as the liquid level rises above that for which the device is set the valves will be closed to shut off the supply. Thus the coating composition within the coating compartment is maintained uniform as to quantity, temperature, fluidity, and as to its other qualities.
As the permeation of the fabric by the coating liquid is affected by any variations in the temperature and consistency of the liquid, and as it is desired to apply to the fabric the maximum amount possible of the coating composition without the same passing through and showing upon the -reverse side, it is important that the operator shall be able to accurately control the application of the composition and this is provided for by means of the eccentric acting upon the pivoted frame so as to vertically adjust the guide roll 29 and thus press the fabric into more or less intimate contact with the surface of the coating roll, it being noted that the scraper 38 moves bodily with the guide roll 29 when adjusted by means of the eccentric so as to remove the surplus coating composition from the fabric.
When for any reason it is desired to interrupt the coating operation the hand wheel 37 is so turned as to lift the guide roller 29 and the scraper 38 with the fabric clear of the coating roll. ln doing this the scraping edge 41 is brought to bear even more strongly upon the lower side of the fabric so as to remove any surplus material from the fabric.. When it is desired to resume coating operations it is necessary to reverse the direction of travel of the fabric so as to bring the line of division between the messie contacting relation with the coating roll. To accomplish this the operator will grasp the hand wheel 45 and by rotating, the
take-up reel 43 will wind the fabric thereon thus taking up the slack caused by the reverse movement of the fabric above the tank and also winding thereon fabric from the supply. As the fabric resumes its forward travel the supply is furnished from that accumulated on the take-up reel until normal conditions are resumed with the parts in the position illustrated in Fig. 1.
When the machine has been standing idle for vsome time the coating roll 20 will be found to be covered by a hard layer of coating composition and it is necessary to remove the same before operations can proceed. Under such circumstances the lever 25 is actuated to rock the shaft 22 so as to bring the scraping edge 24 firmly into pressure contact with the surface of the roll whereby the hard film of composition is speedily relmoved from the coating roll and the same put into condition for use.
In order to enable the operator to quickly restore the eccentric 33 to a predetermined angular adjustment lin resuming coating operations with the fabric bearing upon the coating roll, the shaft of the eccentric is advantageously provided with a lever 49 having mounted thereon a set screw 50 provided with a hand wheel 51, the end of the set screw being adapted, as the lever is swung through its are, to contact with a-stop in the form of a bracket 52. The set screw having been adjusted so as to stop the lever at a predetermined point, the eccentric shaft I'nay be turned so as to lift the fabric clear of the coating roll and thereafter no calculation is necessary to reverse themovement of the eccentric and bring the cloth into the exact desired relation to the roll.
In Fig. 5 is shown a slightly modified form of mechanism for controlling the level of the material within the coating compartment, the valves 15 in this case being connected`by means of the links 17 with a hand rod 58 which is longitudinally adjustable by the operator tb maintain a steady flow of liquid from the fluxing compartment 13 to the coating compartment 14. ln this form of construction the automatic regulation of the flow is omitted.
From the foregoing it will be seen that We have provided a machine in which the quality and amount of the composition within the coating compartment is automatically maintained uniform and in which such nicety of adjustment is provided for that the operator is able to accurately control the application of the coating composition to the fabric whereby to secure ideal results; also that provision is made for quickly cleaning the coating roll after a period of non-use and also for the reversing of the fabric and taking up the slack when it is necessary to resume coating operations after a temporary interruption thereof.
