This alternate operation of elongating the strands and laterally expanding the sheet is continued until the desired degree of expansion is obtained. The sheet then passes under rolls M which engage the marginal bands F as well as the intermediate portions and seat the sheet with all portions in the same plane.
It is obvious that any number of unslitted portions may be left in the sheet by suitable provision for expanding only the intermediate slitted portions.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. The method of expanding sheet metal, which consists in laterally expanding the sheet, and elongating the strands thereof successively through a series of operations to maintain a constant length of sheet.
2. The method of expanding sheet metal, which consists in laterally drawing the edges of the stranded section apart, and elongating the strands successively through a series of operations to maintain a constant length of sheet.
The method of expanding sheet metal, which consists in forming adjacent strand- :ed and unaltered portions successively through a series of, gradual operations, in elongating the stranded portion, and in separating the o posite edges thereof to laterally expand said portion and to maintain the longitudinal dimension thereof the same as the unaltered portion.
4. The method of expanding metal, which consists in forming thesheet with alternate stranded and unaltered parallel portions, and in successively through. a series of gradual operations laterally separating said unaltered portions and longitudinally expanding said stranded portions to maintain a constant length of sheet.
5. The method of expanding sheet metal, which consists in forming a sheet with a central stranded portion and parallel marginal unaltered portions, and successively through a series of gradual operations in drawing said marginal portions laterally apart and elongating said stranded portion to maintain a constant length of sheet.
6. The method of expanding metal, which consists in forming the sheet with adjacent, stranded and unaltered portions, in successively through a series of gradual operations laterally separating said unaltered portion, and longitudinally extending said stranded portion independently of the unaltered portion to maintain a constant length of sheet.
7. The method of expanding sheet metal having a stranded portion of a sheet intermediate unstranded portions, which consists in a series of successive operations upon the,
stranded and unstranded portions respectively for elongating the stranded portion and separating the unstranded portions thereof.
8. The method of expanding sheet metal, which consists in simultaneously laterally expanding and longitudinally feeding said sheet, and successively elongating the strands thereof to maintain a constant length of sheet.
