-METHOD OF FORMING EXPANDED SHEET MET AT.
In the dra\\'iugs -v higure l is a plan \ltiW ol' the sheetiuetal hlank after the first slitting operation; Fig; .5 is a ji iuilar ie\\' a [tee a suhsequeut slitting operation: Fig. 3 is a diagrauiutat'ie plan '\'ie\\' illustrating the manner of expanding the slitted sheet; Fig. -l is a diagrannnatit: longitudinal section thereof: and Fig. 5 isa plan of the product.
it is the "sperial ohjeet of theiuvention t0 ohtain an expanded |netal sheet having eertaiu uorel eharaeteristiesand\vhieh'adapt it; .l'or speeial use; The speeilie use for \rhieh the prodlu-t-is designed is the reinl'oreetnent; ol paper or lilier stock used in the iuzruutaeture-oli tubular bodies for barr lsand other pae,kages,-liut it is ohr-ions that there are.\'arious other uses for whit-h such a produet is equally \'\-te"lladapttal.
- one eharaeteristie feature. of my improved prodnet is that the expanded portions lie in the szmr pla-ue instead of'heing hent or twisted as is usual. This adapts the material for insertion hetu'een piles of the paper or liher Sttlt'k without materially iuereasing the th iekuess thereofi. I
vAn ther eharaeteristie of theluaterial is the romhination of. expanded and unexpand ed portions in the saute integral sheet nd in the same. plane. Sui-h q material when used as a rein'lnreeluenfl between plies of a lilier-storlc has the advantage of reinforcing eertain portions of the. area to a greater extent; than other portions and in the formation of tuhular hmlies strengthening bands may he. formed of the."uuexpauded portions.
Still another feature. (it-the invention is the novel means of expanding'thesheet \rhieh avoids the. hut-Hing ortriuiping of the uuexpanded portions by reason of the transverse ex 'iansiou of other portions.
The first step in the process is the slitting Specificatio n of Letters Patent.

In in improved process I pre-ferablyfobtain the desired elfeet by--ztliealternate. dra\\'in; or elongatingof the st-rands and the transverse. expansion of the Sheet. Thus as shown in Fig. 3 the slitting of the sheet is lltl'ftil lllttl in its twooperations successively hyslitting rolls it and "I and as'an ineidenee to their operation the st'nuuls interiuediateslits are-slightly elongated; The.
strands it would result in buckling up the- .81 the strands into Oblique angling gation produced by the rolls L until a second pair of rolls L engage the strands and further elongatithe same. This alternate operation of elongating the strands and laterally expanding the sheet is continued until the desired degree of expansion is obtained. The sheet then passes under rolls M which engage the marginal bands F as well as the intermediate portions and seat the sheet with all portions in the same plane.
It is obvious that any number of unslitted portions may be left in the sheet by suitable provision for expanding only the intermediate slitted portions.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. The method of expanding sheet metal, which consists in laterally expanding the sheet, and elongating the strands thereof successively through a series of operations to maintain a constant length of sheet.
2. The method of expanding sheet metal, which consists in laterally drawing the edges of the stranded section apart, and elongating the strands successively through a series of operations to maintain a constant length of sheet.
The method of expanding sheet metal, which consists in forming adjacent strand- :ed and unaltered portions successively through a series of, gradual operations, in elongating the stranded portion, and in separating the o posite edges thereof to laterally expand said portion and to maintain the longitudinal dimension thereof the same as the unaltered portion.
4. The method of expanding metal, which consists in forming thesheet with alternate stranded and unaltered parallel portions, and in successively through. a series of gradual operations laterally separating said unaltered portions and longitudinally expanding said stranded portions to maintain a constant length of sheet.
5. The method of expanding sheet metal, which consists in forming a sheet with a central stranded portion and parallel marginal unaltered portions, and successively through a series of gradual operations in drawing said marginal portions laterally apart and elongating said stranded portion to maintain a constant length of sheet.
6. The method of expanding metal, which consists in forming the sheet with adjacent, stranded and unaltered portions, in successively through a series of gradual operations laterally separating said unaltered portion, and longitudinally extending said stranded portion independently of the unaltered portion to maintain a constant length of sheet.
7. The method of expanding sheet metal having a stranded portion of a sheet intermediate unstranded portions, which consists in a series of successive operations upon the,
stranded and unstranded portions respectively for elongating the stranded portion and separating the unstranded portions thereof.
8. The method of expanding sheet metal, which consists in simultaneously laterally expanding and longitudinally feeding said sheet, and successively elongating the strands thereof to maintain a constant length of sheet.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
