AUTOMATIC OIL-SUPPLY VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whomizzifmcg/ concern:
Beit known that I, PAUL DArrnRN, av Acitizen of the United States, residing at Robert Lee, in the county of Coke, State of Texas, have. invented a new and useful Automatic Oil-Supply Valve; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to anr automatic oil supply valve, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which embodies novel features of construction whereby the supply of oil or liquid' fuel to the burner of a boiler can be controlled automatically by the steam pressure within the boiler.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of this character which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which will enable a uniform steam pressure to be maintained automatically within the boiler, which will not require constant attention from the operator, and which can be adjusted for a high or a low steam pressure, as may be desired.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel featuresv thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the followingdescription and accompanying drawing, in
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an automatic oil supply valve constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of a valve block and carrying frame removed from the valve casing.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of the invention, the numeral 1 designates a steam cylinder within which a piston 2 is mounted. A steam pipe 3 leading from the boiler communicates with the cylinder l toward the lower end thereof, said lower end being closed by a cap 4 which is provided with a drain cock 5 through which Vcondensed steam can be withdrawn.
A head 6 is screwed upon the upper end of the cylinder 1, and a. jam nut 7 is utilized to insure a tight joint between the members. Opposite sides of the cylinder head 6 are formed with the laterally projecting integral ears 8, said ears being provided with openings to receive the threaded extremities of a yoke 9. Nuts 10 are fitted upon the projecting extremities of the threaded ends of the yoke and serve to cla'mp the yoke rigidly in operative position.
The valve casing 11 is arranged within the yoke 9, being formed with a downwardly projecting stem 11a which extends through the cylinder head 6 and is threaded within the same. A passage 12 extends transversely through the valve casing 11, and couplings 11h at opposite ends thereof serve to engage the oil supply pipe sections 13. A vertical opening extends through the valve casing 11 and intersects the transverse oil passage 12. A frame 14 is slidably mounted within the vertical opening of the valve casing, being provided with a downwardly projecting rod 15 which extends into the steam cylinder 1 and is connected to the piston 2, and also with an upwardly extending rod 1G which has a head 17 loosely mounted upon the upper end thereof. A suitable 'stufiing box 18 surrounds the rod 16 at the top of the valve casing 11, and a coil spring 19 is interposed between the head 17 of the rod 16 and a similar head 20 on the lower end of a screw 21 which is threaded within the top of the yoke 9. A handle 22 is applied to the upper end of the screw 21 and provides a means for manipulating the same to in'- crease or decrease.. the'tension in the coil spring 19.
A valve block 24 is fitted within the frame 14 and formed with a vertical slit 25 through which the oil flows when the valve block is in such a position as to establish communication between the two sections of oil supply pipe 13. As the pressure of steam within the boiler increases, the piston 2 will be forced upwardly against the action of the spring 19, thereby moving the valve block 24 and partially cutting 0H the supply of oil so that the fire under the boiler will be of decreased intensity. On the other hand, should the steam pressure within the boiler spring 19. so as to increase the flow of oil to the burner and produce a more intense flame under the boiler. The tension of the spring 19 can be adjusted by manipulating the handle 22, and in this way the device can be set to automatically maintain any degree of steam pressure in the boiler withoutclose attention on the part ofthe operator.

Rectangular frames ,28 may be arranged under the packing and the edges of` the valve block may be notched, as indicated 'at 24", to receive springs 29 which act upon the frames 28 to push the packing 27 into 'operative position on opposite sides of the placed in position at any time, thereby enabling any desired size or shape of aperture 25 to be employed, depending upon the characterv of the liquid fuel or fluid being employed.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An automatic liquid fuel supply valve,
