MOLD FOR CONCRETE STRUCTURES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 121$.
Application filed April 26, 1512. Serial No. 693,408.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, OiiARLns' H. IVITT- iionrrr, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds for Concrete Structures, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription, reference being had to the accompa'ny-ing drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a mold suitable for use in the construction of buildings, or other concrete formations.
The object of the present invention is the production of a built up sectional mold in which the sections are provided with means that facilitate their proper adjustment relative to each other, and the inclusion with such sections of clamping devices whereby the mold sections may be accurately alined and so gripped as to maintain their accurate alinement.
Figure I is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of my mold. Fig. II is a side elevation of one of the clamps used w th my mold, the parts of said clamp being shown in the positions assumed just previous to their being put into action. Fig. III is a rear elevation of the clamp. Fig. IV is a vertical cross section taken on line TIP-IV, Fig. III. Fig. V is a top or plan view of the clamp.
In the accompanying drawings: B designates mold sections, each of which comprises a mold plate 5, having marginal flange members 1, the paired flange members having outwardly jutting wings 2 disposed at right angles to the mold plates. The out wardly jutting wings 2 of the mold section paired flange members are adapted to abut against each other when themold sections are assembled, as illustrated in Fig. I; and to permit of their ready adjustment relative to each other, in order that the mold sections may be properly alined, with the r inner faces flush with each other, the inner faces of the wings 2 being preferably flat. The outer faces of said wings are, however, provided with longitudinal ribs 3 which serve as alining members for such paired flange members and the mold plates by which they are carried. These r bs receive the clamps about to be described, and through the medium of which the mold sections are adjusted when the clamps are tightand a ened into binding action after being fitted to the paired flange members of the mold sections. Inasmuch as the clamps are all of similar construction, it will be sufficient to describe one of these clamps.
The body of my clamp comprises a jaw l leg 5 separated from each other and united by a connecting member (3, the jaw f being furnished with a socket 7, preferably of \/shape, that is adapted to receive one of the ribs 3 on one of the flange member wings 2 as illustrated in the drawings. The leg 5 of the clamp is perforated to receive a pivot pin 8, which is mounted in the walls of the leg.
9 designates a movable jaw operable in the slotted leg 5, the said jaw being provided at its inner face with a socket 10, preferably of V-shape, adapted to receive the flange member rib 3 opposite to that which is received by the socket in the jaw 4 of the clamp. The movable jaw 9 includes a pair of arms 11 separated from each other and provided with longitudinal slots 12 through which the pivot pin 8 extends. At the outer wall of said movable jaw is an inclined face 13 that is presented toward the pivot pin 8.
'14: designates an eccentric mounted on the pivot pin 8 and having its edge presented toward the outer wall of the movable jaw 9, the said eccentric being furnished with an arm 15 to which a suitable lever, such as that indicated partially in dotted lines Fig. III, may be applied.
When my clamp is to be placed in practical service, it is first applied to the mold section paired flange members to be engaged thereby, as illustrated in Fig. II. At this time, the movable jaw 9 of the clamp is separated from one of the paired flange members, due to the eccentric being so positioned as to present to the movable jaw a portion of its edge surface that is nearest to the axis of the pivot pin 8. To accomplish the clamping action, the eccentric is adjusted to gradually present a portion of its edge surface that is more distant from the axis of the pivot pin to the body of the movable jaw; and, as a consequence, the said jaw is adjusted toward the jaw 4 of the clamp body, until the paired flange members between the two jaws 9 and 4: are firmly gripped by said jaws.
It will be apparent that inasmuch as the jaws -l and 9 are provided with opposing sockets adapted to receive the ribs 3 of the mold section paired flange members, said jaws act as alining members with respect to the paired flange members engaged and clamped thereby.
I claim:
In a mold of the character described mold plates provided with right-angle bars at their margins, the inner faces of said mold plates being flush with each other and the angle-bars being provided with flanges which extend outwardly from the edges of the mold plates each outturned flange having a central longitudinal alining rib on its exposed face at a point between the inner turned flange also having parallel clampreceiving seats at opposite sides of said cen tral longitudinal alining rib, and clamps fitted to said parallel seats, each of said clamps comprising a pair of clamp members movable away from each other so as to pass over 'said alining ribs and movable toward each other to engage said alining ribs and the parallel seats on opposite sides thereof, and each of said clamp members having a groove for the reception of one of said alining ribs. 7
