TYPE-WRITER ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1916.
I Application filed November 6, 1915. SeriafNo. 60,001;
clare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of'the invention, sucl1 as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in typewriter attachments and the principal object of the invent10n is to provide a device which Wlll enable a user to use paper in the roll rather than in the sheet as in the ordinary manner.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which may be readily attached to typewriters of the ordinary construction without in any way changing the same or interfering-with the operation thereof.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device which is an attachment entirely separate from the typewriter and which is constructed so that it may be marketed at a reasonable figure and'need not be attached to or considered a part of the ordinary typewriter.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective'view illustrating the attachment in place on a typewriter. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the attachment. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the device. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of the guide bar and carrier wheels. Fig. 5 is a detail view in elevation of the connection between the carriage of the attachment and the typewriter carriage. Fig. 6 is a sectional View through Fig. 5, and Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of one of the sections of the attaching device illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6. v
Referring to'the drawing the numeral 1 designates as an entirety the base of the device consisting of the bar 2, provided near opposite ends with the cross bars 3. The bar 2 extends beyond the cross bars 3 and secured to these extensions on their under sides are the standards 4, which areprovided near their upper ends with aplurality spaced apertures 5. These apertures 5 are adapted to receive the bolts 6 which ,form. a connec-' tion between the extension 7 a nd the standards. The upper ends of the extensions 7 are provided with apertures through which the guide bar 8 projects, which'guide bar 8 is connected to the extensions at opposite ends of the device and forms a track on which the guide wheels run. I w l The carriage of the device is designated generally by the numeral 9 and comprises a main supporting bar 10 provided with the downwardly inclined rearwardly extending arms 11, the rear ends of which are pivoted to the blocks 12 which are formedwith the bifurcations 13 in which the guide wheels 14 are rotatably mounted. Extending downwardlv and forwardly from the bar.10 are the arms 15, the lower ends of which are turned inwardly as at 16 and form supports for the sleeve 17 in'which the attaching elements are secured. It'will'be noted upon reference to the drawing that the arms 15 are adjustable along the bar 10 so that the device may be made to fit typewriter carriagesof varying sizes.
The attaching elements hereinbefore re ferred to are designated generally by the, s51... segmental bodies 19 provided with a rubbers numeral 18 and each'comprises a pair of lining 20 and with an angular extension 21 provided with a longitudinal slot 22. The
slots 22 are adapted to receive the pivot bolts 23 which extend into the sleeves 17 and form supports for said attaching means. It will be noted that the slots allow for adjustment of the sections 19 relative to each other so that the same may be made to fit the knobs at the ends of' the platen rollers of typewriters which vary in size by the simple adjustment of the extension 21 on the bolts 23.
Extending outwardly from the bar 10 in the direction of the arms 15 but positioned slightly above said arms. and diverging therefrom are suitable brackets 24. formed at their outer ends with. the bight portions 25 forming seats for the axle of the paper roll support; Riveted or otherwise secured to the vertical extension of the bight portion 25 at the forward side thereof are the arms 26 which are connected to each other by the bar 27, the upper edge of which is provided with a plurality of teeth or serra-.
tions 28 which are sharpened so as to enable the operator to readily tear OK the Pap In use, it will be apparent that the device is attached to a typewriter by securing the attaching element 18 to the knobs on the ends of the platen roller of the typewriter and the paper .on'the roll'is then threaded down through the typewriter in the ordinary manner and passed up between the arms 26 and the bar 27. The typewriter is then used in the ordinary manner and as the paper is written upon it will be seen that the same will pass up between the arms 26 and the bar 27 and after the letter has been written or the typewritten matter completed, it will be evident that the operator may draw the paper up until the written matter passes the bar 27 and the teeth 28 will allow "the easy severing of the paper 'from that remaining in the machine. In
this way it willbe seen that a device is provided which will allow for the use of rolls of paper on typewriters and will also enable the operator to readily sever the written matter from the paper remaining in the typewriter.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as appended claims.
What is claimed is 1. In a typewriter attachment, a base, standards extending upwardly from the base, a supporting bar extending between the standards,a carriage slidable on the supporting bar, arms extending forwardly and upwardly from the carriage, roll support at the ends of the arms, bars extending forwardly from the arms, a severing bar extending between the last named bars and means connecting the carriage to a typewriter carriage for simultaneous move-. ment therewith.
2. In a typewriter attachment comprising a base, standards at opposite ends of the copies of this patent may be obtained to: five cents each, by addressing Washington, D. G.
will fall within the spirit and scope of the a paper blocks and being rotatable on the support.-.
ing bar and means on tie bar of the carriage for attaching the sameto; thecarr'iage of a typewriter, and means on thebttr of the carriage for supporting a-roll of paper and severing the paper into sheets.
3. A typewriter attachment oom rising a base, standards extendingeupward the base at opposite ends, I; horizontal guide bar extending between the standards, rollers movable on said guide bar, blocks supported by said rollers, a carriage, said carriage comprising a supporting bar, arms extending downwardly and rearwardly from said supporting bar and pivotally connected to the blocks, arms extending downwardly and forwardly from the supporting bar and connected to a typewriter carriage, rods extending upwardly and forwardly from the supporting bar, a paper roll support at the outer ends of-the rods and means extending forwardly from the outer ends of the rods to sever the paper after it has been written upon.
4. A typewriter attachment includin a horizontal supporting bar, a carriage ar slidable on the supporting bar, arms extending forwardly and downwardly from 1y from support extending between the arms and a I paper severing device secured to the ends of the arms, the paper-roll support and sev- .ering device being positioned in a plane above the carria e of the typewriter.
In testimony-w ereof'I aifix my signature in presence of tvto witnesses.
